It gives new players a chance to win and get better
It ensures players have to actually get better to avoid dying as often

The reasons I see for why people complain about sbmm is “it makes matches to sweaty”, “I just wanna play against scrubs”, “Its too hard” and half the time the complaints aren’t coming from the community of a pvp game it’s coming from people in the “above average” section of this image and there’s a good reason why that section is the most prone to bitching and complaining about sbmm.

For simplicity we’ll call them gold players. Golds are special because they’re not necessarily bad at a game just not great at it and because they understand the games mechanics to a degree where they can survive against pros it means that if sbmm were to be taken out that section of players would dominate most matches and most games would be artificially geared towards their victory. That shit is far more fucking toxic than dealing with players at your skill level, for new players it means they’ll constantly die over and over again and not be given a chance to get better due to the skill gap formed overtime as the population of a community of a game gets generally more skilled while for pros these people will become annoying as shit to put up with and no fun to kill because golds will be prone to bitching and whining about losing in any aspect due to having enough time invested into the game to feel as if they’re entitled to win every match. Skill based matchmaking does away with this shit because it ensures lobbies pair up players in away where everyone has some chance of winning instead of hoping RNG doesn’t assblast them with someone far above their skill level

are there any genuine reasons not to like sbmm, though?

Not really
The systems fundamentally setup to be fair, if you don’t like sbmm not because you hate that fairness the other reason might just be the queue times, I mean think about it if you suck a lot not many players are around for you to play with same if your really good and if your at least in high gold or low pro it’s likely you’ll be queuing up against the same assholes that killed you alot. Then that’s where sbmm can cause a justifiable amount of frustration

[insert insult towards valve here]

there are competitive games that don't match based on skill

i cant think of any that actually have 'ranks', they have a linear progression system instead, like battlefield or COD

Yeah it’s common in old games before sbmm got popular I think around apex released

Yeah, the best ones don't even record your K:D ratio.

datamining feature! feds track your skill level so that they can assassinate the more skilled people first before the revolution comes!

And you should insult them! Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.
