They’re not getting better with every new major title that comes out and by graphics I mean shit like textures and models. If graphics were to improve things like

>integration of procedural animation

>fully simulated rag dolls for all unique assets
>volumetric effects
>increased draw distance
>destruction and fluid physics
Would all be more noticed in more games but that’s not the case because that shit affects performance far more than textures, does affect game design to an extent and does require shitloads of money most companies that can afford games with those features aren’t gonna spend on because that shits not paying for the game, advertising is. I don’t understand the appeal of visuals to new folks it doesn’t even look good if there’s no art direction behind it either it just fucks over your performance and blocks off potential players due to hardware limitations…

ray tracing even tho its old tech is becoming feasible which is big leap as far as ganme design goes, but the big developers aare usually in cohorts with gpu and processor manufacturers

Generally I agree, especially with hardware limitations. Not everyone can afford the hardware required and often these requirements are completely superfluous to the game itself. At least allow me to turn off your fancy effects in your settings. Not to mention that the advantage of PC games is that hypothetically you don't need a special gaming device so games can be played by anyone that just has a computer at hand. But if you make your game dependent on special hardware than it's not much different that requiring people to buy a gaming console.

However some games are more mechanically tied to graphics. In stealth games light and shadows are part of the gameplay for instance. Maybe some future advancements in graphics could also allow for new mechanics.

Good art direction has always been more important to my enjoyment than sheer photorealism.

NOOO U GOTTA ENJOY THE SHITTY GRAPHICS WHICH BREAK U OUT OF THE IMMERSION ANON

ITS NOT LIKE GRAPHICS HELP THE GAMEPLAY TOO BY MAKING THINGS MORE IMMERSIVE ANON

NOO U GOTTA ENJOY THE SHITTY UNIMMERSIVE GRAPHICS, BETTER THE GAME LOOK PURELY LIKE A MAP PAINTER WITHOUT ANY GOOD DETAILS INSTEAD OF A MAP WHERE U SEE THE RESULT OF YOUR ACTIONS LIKE HIGHLY DEVELOPED CITIES, RAILROAD, TRAINS,AND ETC IN HIGH GRAPHICAL DETAIL

There are more indie games that try to experiment with and take advantage of this kind of tech but you have to understand video games are an industry and must obey the rules of capitalism, which means you need efficient production and increasing efficiency. There is a production process that exists and gets refined over time. Until somebody figures out how to implement alternatives in a way that their competitors must copy, the big players are content to keep churning out the same thing but slightly improved. Worse, a lot of major video game publishers have adopted the ethos that they should innovate in the area of making people pay more money, because shockingly that is where the money is. So instead of innovating in making the games better they try to innovate in the area of conditioning consumers to tolerate a shittier and more half-assed product full of pay to win nonsense and loot crates.

The closetst thing to an immersive grand strategy game is Hidden Agenda.

It's true though, good graphics and good gameplay isn't mutually exclusive (unless you were agreeing with us in which case ok)

nah i was just "disagreeing" with the way you guys post

i think many modern AAA games couldve been a lot better if they hadnt wasted so many resources in trying to make them "pretty" (photorealistic)
framing it solely around how the game looks, i prefer a good artstyle over good graphics (again, graphics most of the time just means realism which is kinda boring to me)

Metal Slug, drawn over a roughly six-month period by six artists with two working concurrently on another game and released in 1996, is still one of the best looking games ever released. You don't need all that fancy reality-simulating bullshit to make a game look good.

and for other games compare pathologic 1 vs 2
like jesus christ the difference is great

 No.20133

it's easier to make your game a tech demo than make a good game, which makes it better for profit-seeking. sneed tracing is easier and safer for corpos to implement than making sovl
