I picked up WAXD instead of WASD from Stavros Fasoulas' C64 games. This means resting your thumb on the X key, allows for a smoother transition from forward to backward diagonal movement and feels less RSI inducing.

but in third person games you also have to move the camera and aim. I think that any game where you need to aim accurately is better with mouse + keyboard. But I haven't tried playstation gyro aiming yet, so I could be wrong

keyboard and mouse works well enough for everything
but optimal is
racing-games, pilot-games: joystick
arena-shooters keyboard with a track-point
strategy-games keyboard and ball-mouse or graphic-tablet with stylus

valves unusual prototype game-pad with the two concave haptic touch surfaces seemed like it could make game-pads interesting.

you can commit a keyboard nipple action to muscle memory because they're very consistent, and react much faster. You can't do that with a mouse, even very good mice never behave exactly the same.
But you do trade some precision for a better reaction time.
