Dunno but he had an abusive childhood. Grew up in poverty in Indiana during the Great Depression to a Klansman father whose lunged were fucked from mustard gas in WWI so he couldn't work. Mom was also a deadbeat. He killed neighborhood animals and would put on funerals for roadkill (and killed a cat during one of these), while falling under the influence of a local Pentecostal church. Gets really into religion and apparently has a fascination with the morbid side of Christianity.
At the same time, he was highly rebellious and seemed to turn against his father and the racism of his hometown by going far left, befriending blacks, then becoming interested in communism. Gets a little older and attends CPUSA meetings in Indianapolis, then McCarthyism busts that up so he goes back to religion. Becomes a preacher as an adult and a civil rights activist of some repute in Indianapolis when that movement was going on nationally. This is all before he moved to San Francisco.
