To be fair it's only the second largest industrial action in Northern Ireland. Do NOT ask about the first one, we don't talk about Britain's only ever successful general strike. We do NOT.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulster_Workers%27_Council_strike
>The strike was called by unionists who were against the Sunningdale Agreement, which had been signed in December 1973. Specifically, the strikers opposed the sharing of political power with Irish nationalists, and the proposed role for the Republic of Ireland's government in running Northern Ireland.
<The strike was organised and overseen by the Ulster Workers' Council and Ulster Army Council, which were formed shortly after the Agreement's signing. Both of these groups included Ulster loyalist paramilitaries such as the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF).[1] These groups helped to enforce the strike by blocking roads and intimidating workers.[1][2][3][4] During the two-week strike, loyalist paramilitaries killed 39 civilians, of whom 33 died in the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.
>Merlyn Rees had interpreted the strike, in which avowed loyalists had openly defied the British government, as an outbreak of Ulster nationalism.[33] Journalist Robert Fisk endorsed this view by arguing that:
< The fifteen unprecedented, historic days in which a million British citizens, the Protestants of Northern Ireland, staged what amounted to a rebellion against the Crown and won… During those fifteen days, for the first time in over fifty years… a section of the realm became totally ungovernable. A self-elected provisional government of Protestant power workers, well-armed private armies and extreme politicians organized a strike which almost broke up the fabric of civilized life in Ulster. They deprived most of the population for much of the time of food, water, electricity, gas, transport, money and any form of livelihood.[34]

Lmao I can imagine myself 10 years ago caring and believing stuff in such a video, although actually I think it has been almost 10 years since Corbyn drew my interest into politics and then promptly showed me why bourgeois democracy is bollocks and how silly it is to place any faith in it as either a voter or a genuine politician. So thanks I guess Jez, if it weren't for you I'd be blissfully ignorant right now..

Very nice how at 1:10 the word 'politician' is used to be synonymous with 'Conservative'; the speech writer has essentially adopted the 'populist' repetoire.

Except that's the half the reason the electorate are taking to voting Labour in the next election; opportunism and a catch-all policy front which does nothing to deviate from the register of British electorialism - the very same which saw Blair elected by a landslide.

To laconically restate what someone else said within the last thread, this isn't a win for Starmer, but a loss for the Conservatives; they've failed to negotiate international developments with internal policy measures, the main being the response to energy price rises and inflation.

The conclusion you can naturally draw is that the British electorate are as cynical as their politicians. Dismissing Starmer as lacking in ideals completely misses the point: his entire campaign is a product of the partial demand for political stability, something the Conservatives have been unable to achieve after so long in power. This was arguably the reason they were first voted in, under the guise of a rational defence of the prevailing economic order from which the Brtiish public benefits, thanks to Cameron's unity and Labour's discohesion.

The British public know full well where their interests lie; they can march for social justice causes whilst still profiting from Western imperialism. Chiding Starmer for his lack of ideals is a complete hypocrisy when it has been and will continue to be the voting public who draw these affairs into order.

Well not really, because if Tesco has to buy oil, bananas, housewares, clothes, etc from third world producers at a price that would be fair and dignified for the producer, then Tesco is just going to pass the cost on to you rather than accept lower profit. Plus, we have a certain kind of industry here that depends on education not accessible in many poorer places, if the third world was getting the kind of moolah to build more schools/universities and to speculate on the same financial markets and perform the same services we do, then you'd be competing with them for work in the grand scheme of things.

So basically by beating down on nations means that the fine sweatshop workers of Bangladesh are restricted to manufacturing jobs we largely don't compete in and for pay that allows Tesco to achieve a very healthy profit margin for prices that for most people here can still afford.

You don't understand bro. I'll do a summary for anybody who wants to know the details.

Around two years ago I did something regrettably stupid. It lead to me being tailed by MI5 for half a year, a covert surveillance warrant being issued by a judge, and having my phone and personal laptop hacked. One of the ways they loved to fuck with me was by leaving messages for me in chat auto-complete.

Fast forward to today. They have not left me alone. MI5 are gone but they still have their spyware on both my laptop and my phone. The consequences of what they did during the first year have eaten through me like moths through fucking wool.

But you know what I'm done fucking pretending. Absolutely nothing can warrant this. Nothing. This has now become some sad little exercise of trying to bait me into leading my life on their own terms. Instead I've grown a fucking back bone.

Like I said, one of their little ways of fucking with you is by leaving messages in your auto-complete suggestions.

Maybe if one cares about the parliamentary democracy in this country and thinks it matters, then perhaps it's a riot to read, but hearing about how incompetent, corrupt and hypocritical bourgeois politicians are privileged to be with a bourgeois state is not a surprise nor particularly aggravating when you can see the forest for the trees.

So, like, what's the point? Just sitting on the side of politics and having short articles that are like

Respected MPs are talking about us facing a 1939 moment. The chairman of NATO's Military Committee has warned of conflict with Russia in the next two decades and, not to be outdone, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps last week lamented that we are "moving from a post-war to pre-war world".

Yet arguably the most significant intervention has come today from the head of the British Army, General Sir Patrick Sanders. In a heavily-trailed speech, Sir Patrick has argued that in the event of war with Russia, young people could be conscripted because our military is “too small”.

There would be clear differences between the conscription drives of WWI and WWII. Most obviously, our streets will not be tattooed with jaundiced-yellow posters of the moustachioed Lord Kitchener.

Instead, we’ll have the likes of Dermot O’Leary and Paul from The Traitors popping up on our social media feeds calling on us to do our duty.

But the horrors of conscription will remain the same. Unlike our predecessors, this generation would be going to the front line with a clear idea of the bloody realities of a global conflict, rather than being sustained by jingoism or the fantasy of a war that would be ‘over by Christmas’.

I simply cannot see Gen Z or millennials accepting this; conscientious objections and civil disobedience would be abundant.

To be clear, this is not a lazy caricature of much-maligned generations.

The reality is, given the unspeakable horrors that global conflict would ignite, they will rightly question why their blood must be spilled to compensate for the failures of successive governments to properly defend our national security interests.

In the last 20 years, troop numbers have fallen precipitously. In 2004, 114,000 brave men and women were serving in our armed forces - but that figure has dropped to just 75,000 now. Numbers are projected to slump even further, potentially dipping below 70,000 in the next few years.

Yes, some of this decline can be explained by the changing nature of warfare, but the stark reality is that we have paid insufficient attention to our defence capabilities for far too long.

Sir Patrick’s frustration is palpable and it should be a major wakeup call for everyone in the country, and in particular those who’ve overseen the gradual reduction in troop numbers and the forecasted falls in real-terms defence spending.

We have been too complacent for too long. To protect our country, and our young people, we must be prepared to make sacrifices to bolster our defences. Conscription should be a final resort, not a result of our failures to properly resource our military."

Lol what a twat

British Army since its inception has always been reactionary, serving and loyal to the Monarchy, I'm not aware of any mutinies, and the British Army has a long history of colonialism, Imperialism, which continues to this day, as we are seeing with Yemen; then there's the issues of racism, nazism, sexism, assault and rape … any sort of conscription would be a death sentence for the working class which it already is through coerced volunteering, like going to poor areas schools to convince kids to be a cadet then the army, disgusting bullshit

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/advanced-future-military-laser-achieves-uk-first

"During a trial at the MOD’s Hebrides Range, the DragonFire laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) system achieved the UK’s first high-power firing of a laser weapon against aerial targets. The range of DragonFire is classified, but it is a line-of-sight weapon and can engage with any visible target."

"DragonFire exploits UK technology to be able to deliver a high power laser over long ranges. The precision required is equivalent to hitting a £1 coin from a kilometre away."

"Laser-directed energy weapons can engage targets at the speed of light, and use an intense beam of light to cut through the target, leading to structural failure or more impactful results if the warhead is targeted."

"Firing it for 10 seconds is the cost equivalent of using a regular heater for just an hour. Therefore, it has the potential to be a long-term low-cost alternative to certain tasks missiles currently carry out. The cost of operating the laser is typically less than £10 per shot."

 No.1752119

>>1752112
Ah tbh it just manifests at swearing fealty to a flag instead of a person, loyalty has a kind of a sacrificial angle to it whereas if something was "of the people, for the people" then its defence is simply self-defence.

Like, I think of patriotic Americans reminding others of how many people "died for that flag", at least British soldiers can claim to have fought and died for King and country. Dying for a flag is probably the most cucked thing imaginable, like its only important to raise that flag where ever ordered to do so, but if you end up like Lieutenant Dan.. Well you served your purpose, the flag flew for sometime, nothing was promised in return.

Well as it has been said that the motivation was always to fight for the guy next to you. You fight for your peers and for them and your family to live the life you may not get because you may have to sacrifice. Fighting for your king is the most cucked shit imaginable. You have been doing this shit for centuries, but to most of the eorld it seems barbaric. Most places in the world have evolved past it.

In my father's country they had a saying:
>You can't tax the king and you can't plow the sky
Well now they are gone forever like so many other royal families and monarchies. It is that shrimple.

 No.1752123

In fact, we don't really see the Union flag drapped over everything, probably it's most prominently seen behind politicians and prime ministers announcing policies that will demonstrably weaken the nation and place ever greater hardships on the people, but the flag *implies* patriotism, it *implies* this person announcing the removal of free school meals is acting with due reverence to whatever values and traditions they *want* the flag to represent today. Flags can't disagree and call the politician a shameless cunt for daring to suggest starving children is a British value, a monarch might.

Despite the anger, despite the gun ownership, despite the constitutional right to use them under such circumstances, the only people who suffer from a revolt are civilians in sleepy towns. Need to make this post.

Saw two jobs advertised at Boots for pharmacy technicians; both minimum wage, one for 30 hours another for 25.

Taken together with the minimum wage, the maximum earning potential for the contracted hours works out around £900 after tax. The store is in a location between two cities with no easy transport into town from either, except by rail which is a fortune. The local cost of renting (which doesn't exist, really) is only available for housing which starts at around a grand.

To rent a room in the first city, not an apartment, but a room in a house share, starts at around £800 on the outskirts. Renting a room in the second is unavailable, because the only location is the city centre and quite literally all of them have been converted into student accomodation for the tax incentive by landlords (install fire doors and a panel and you're set).

The ONLY feasable accomodation available is through renting as a lodger in one of the neighbouring towns; this means that you must be able to drive to and from the place you are lodging, because they are individual houses with rooms not rented by an agency but by individuals with no oversight.

This is the reality of wage supression; wages have not moved inline with housing costs nor have they risen in real terms since the end of the 90s. It is absolutely absurd that some people will call themselves socialists, yet when brooked on issues such as labour rights, and even the patheticaly misaligned challenge of fair pay, will simply retort that it is down to the individual to seek better employment; not only do such people exist, but they sail on by because the system as it was twenty years ago or more has not failed them in the way it is currently failing the general working population.

The absolute joke is that this is without considering the question of immigration. The idea that housing should remain a speculative asset is a complete joke. And what's more, the hour-rotation for these jobs is entirely the norm now for employers. They will contract you for at most 30 hours, and will simply feed you shifts piecemeal with no stability. Yet the working population of this country, despite holding together a large part of the fabric of the day-to-day service and care industry are not important enough (read: they do not possess the material resources) to lead to change. The power for that lies squarely in the voting population whom earn the median salaray and see politics as at most a game.

What are the chances of the UK to become an independent Great Power in the upcoming multipolar world order?
As of right now the UK in my opinion is in the same situation as Brazil when it comes to overall geopolitical influence, however the UK has the luxury of having the nuclear weapons.
At least that's how i see it.

 No.1772531

>>1772527
The UK's nuclear weapons are basically owned by America and can't be operated without American assistance, plus our relatively small population and weak economy. Obviously, but don't you think the UK might win from this as well, at least you could pick up the scraps that are left.
I'm asking because i've read an opinion piece that the EU has become an obstacle for other great powers, like for instance:
>Russia wants to get rid of sanctions
>US wants to get rid of the Euro
>China wants to exploit the european market with it's cheap goods
So from the point of view of the UK especially after Brexit it makes sense to help others plunder the EU in hopes that it gets something in return.

You're a racist dickhead, you cherrypicked those quotes from a large number of progressive quotes.

Britain, it's ruling classes, has robbed every nation including its own people, due to that history I say its only right and just Asians and Africans can claim this land as one to belong to, other than that I can't wait until we have a repatriation movement to reverse this brain drain and exploitation of the world's labour.

The Article Quotes Below:

The most common reason people gave was that they are unwilling to fight for the rich and powerful – who they see as profiteers or otherwise unfairly able to avoid the consequences of conflict themselves – at 21%.

"I won't put myself in danger to defend the interests of people who would not risk themselves for me."

"Because this government and country don't care about me at any other point in time. They are the most corrupt government in generations and I won't serve them."

"My life is more valuable than being wasted in a war caused by rich people’s greed."

"Because the process would be an unfair process and the expectations would be on the working/lower/middle classes to serve and not the rich, royalty or the politicians making the decisions."

"Why should the youth fight the wars that the elderly politicians have created? I refuse to leave my son and family behind."

It's also quoted that, many are just apathetic to this country and see it negatively, I agree, reasonably so, it is a shithole:

"I’m not patriotic and wont risk my life for this country."

Why should British proles be punished for the actions of our ruling class centuries ago?
It's the workers who suffer the most from infinity migrants, while the capitalists benefit from these policies because it gives them a larger labour pool of to draw from.

The workers don't suffer because of migrants, they suffer because of capitalists, british proles shouldn't be punished and are not being punished, via immigration as with said immigration the british working class has become in on of itself diverse and previously was anyway during historical colonialism, like East London with Jews, there's no punishment happening at all.

Said actions of the british ruling class is in continuation, it would be stupid to not look at Britain's Neocolonialism, you have looked at londons metal exchange? massive monetary interests in Africa.

I wouldn't say so, immigrants don't exactly take up jobs that supposed white british people would take up, let's say nursing for example, there's massive recruitment plans already here in the UK, yet they aren't taken up as work due to multiple understandable reasons and wider structural issues, hence look for nurses abroad.

the labour market is unfortunately, but it is to some degree racially stratified, look at the gig economy, many migrants come here to study, things like software, and to make ends meet they'll do food deliveries or uber, these aren't exactly some white bloke doing it.

Mass migration is a tool capitalists have used to create a disunited and underemployed proletariat. Why else have recent right-wing governments allowed an unprecedented influx of foreign workers into the country?
>british proles shouldn't be punished and are not being punished, via immigration
Then why have they consistently voted against it, as we saw with brexit? If migration was such a great thing for the working class why does everyone oppose it so fiercely?
>the british working class has become in on of itself diverse and previously was anyway during historical colonialism
Which is it? Has Britain always been diverse or not? Why is diversity taken as being an inherently good thing?
>like East London with Jews
Who have still not integrated after 500 years, and are currently lobbying the British government to support a genocide in the middle east on behalf of a foreign country. Yeah, great people. Glad to have them here.

>I wouldn't say so, immigrants don't exactly take up jobs that supposed white british people would take up,

British people don't want to do these jobs because they pay crap money, and only immigrants are willing to work for such low rates. If we actually had control over our labour market, the pay for these jobs would rise as the bosses wouldn't be able to fill the roles with people willing to work for less. Exactly this happened during COVID when the borders were closed.
>let's say nursing for example, there's massive recruitment plans already here in the UK
No there isn't lmao. They got rid of the NHS bursary and continue to pay nurses shite for the amount of studying you need to do it, not to mention the student debt. It's just cheaper for the NHS to hire foreign nurses with questionable qualifications, rather than raising pay and reintroducing the bursary.

>many migrants come here to study, things like software, and to make ends meet they'll do food deliveries or uber

Most of the ones doing uber and deliveroo aren't here studying lol. They're doing it because it's literally the only job they can do. All you need for it is a phone and bicycle. No need to speak english, have qualifications, or prove your right to work etc.

it's good in this context that he won, but that doesn't make him useful outside a very narrow set of contexts. the story tonight is ultimately that a petty grifter who consistently makes rightish noises about foreign policy struck lucky because capital's b-team went too hard on endorsing genocide. it's the least morally repugnant way this could've gone, it's really funny, but it doesn't magically redeem galloway himself from being an egotist who'll pivot in almost any half-plausible direction if it increases his chance of getting his arse in a parliamentary seat. The fact you think being against Scottish independence is enough to not support an anti-imperialist candidate proves that your brain is riddled with first world petit bourgeois ideology. As is your fixation on social issues. I've got bad news for you: you might have to ally with people who don't share your liberal social views if you want to fight imperialism. Imperialism is the main contradiction and is more important than anything in this world.

Parliamentary politics may be unable to turn the country socialist, but this country is almost never going to become socialist via revolutionary means either, because the vast majority of left wing people are like you and only care about small issues like Scottish independence and collaborationist unions. In fact actually this is exactly the problem with how the British Empire is erroneously seen by working class people, as though it was "theirs" as much as it was the kings' subject or the East India Company's property. The idea that if we admit the Empire did not give more than it took from these nations, that means the British proletariat will have to reimburse former colonies personally as though the Victorian proletariat had just as much control and ownership over the empire as Victoria herself or any of the various colonial companies importing spices and silks.

Why the fuck would you think that was true of Victorian Britain? Because to feel like it's a choice between pride or guilt, can only come from a belief the Empire was yours and not theirs.

This is a naive mode of thinking. If you place the entire propaganda apparatus of society in service of promoting a Tory vote, a Tory vote you will have - should proles also suffer because they drink Coca Cola? Most people have lives to live and nothing to gain from investing time and energy in understanding politics or the function of the world - you and I understand it better than most, and what extra power have we gained? None yet! Chapter 12, conclusion, a system designed to disempower working people and empower capital gives working people no power and capital the whip hand - spoilers!

Stupid people do not deserve to suffer for being stupid. Smart people deserve to suffer for not protecting the stupid from themselves, and indeed for leading the stupid to greater self-harm. The gambler who thinks he's due a win because he doesn't understand probability is an idiot, the MP who thinks he deserves to lose his house because that's the way he sleeps at night after taking backhanders from the gambling companies, having calculated how he can do this without being caught by the parliamentary rules, he's something much worse.

The choice is a stark but incredibly simple one faced by and for the future generations, either:

You can have the system you have now, which produces luxury goods for the privileged consumption of the people of this nation (those who earn sufficently) and promises wealth for the poor,
OR
You can have a system in which the distribution of resources are tied to social responsibilities; no more Jaguar SUVs, no more designer clothing, no more cheap service labour.

At some point the choice will need to be made, because it will be forced. Commodity production cannot be sustained both because of the falling rate of profit and the necessity of releasing carbon into their environment, which is unsustainable.

<“The Labour party can’t agree what a woman is,” he says. “Whereas I’m very clear. As a father of six children, I’m socially conservative. I don’t want my children taught the kind of things Labour wants to teach them in schools.”
His message changes whenever he campaigns in Muslim majority wards/districts to bring out shitty traditionalist talking points, trying to fight elections based on his curated Muslim credentials more than actual political issues. His campaign against Imran Hussain is famous for it. These same shitty traditionalist outbursts are also famous for destroying coalitions he works with, like when he talked shit about the Assange rape allegations which then blew up Respect. There is a reason why not even the SWP wants to work with him any more. Even the cult trots know that his brand of politics is taking a shitty stereotype about workers that was made up by working class hating libs, and then running with it as a political platform. Fucking Nick Griffin unironically supports his platform lmao >>1778538

Galloway also supports establishment anti immigrant action and aussie style point systems instead of promoting unionisation of immigrants and action against porkies that undercut domestic workers, and calls environmental issues "green hysteria" in literally 2024.

I don't pay attention to British politics as much I used to, but Galloway seems like a guy who needs to be at the center of attention. It's in flashy hat as well. Then I read an article about the Rochdale election and the other candidates were also awful and it sounds like a place that's going down the drain, but you know, I suppose we all are:

>He was not the only populist: there was the Rightwing Reform UK candidate Simon Danczuk, a former Labour MP for Rochdale suspended by the party for asking a 17-year-old girl if she wanted him to spank her bottom: he came sixth … The Green candidate Guy Otten was suspended by his party for posting anti-Muslim comments on X — he said the Quran was “full of war, slaughter, rape and pillage with genocide and slavery … not fit for the 21st century.” […] The Labour offering, Azhar Ali, was suspended from his party when a secret recording emerged of him making antisemitic remarks about Jews and the media, but because it was too late to remove his name from the ballot paper he remained the official candidate.

[…]

>Racism flies around Rochdale with the wind: I have never heard anything like it. I think everyone is frightened; they face a future they are not prepared for, and embrace the simplicity of a Middle Eastern conflict brought to them by Tiktok. Young Muslim men with no money dress as gangsters: do they even inhabit their own lives?

>Older white men cursed them from the pubs. “Rapists, the lot of them,” said one; almost everything else he said is unprintable. I met a man who told me, “I respect them [Jews]. Although they are in very limited numbers quantity wise, they have control in all the powerful economies in the world. The thing which is very common with them [is] wherever they go they want [to be the] center of attention.”

>I met an 18-year-old Galloway voter by the town hall. “Fuck Israel,” he said. “No Israel. Wipe them out.” I asked him: what should happen to Jews outside Israel? He thought, then said: “Wipe them out as well”. Why? “Because they support Israel.” He had no other political opinions. Perhaps he did not need them.

[…]

>I met another local independent candidate, William Howarth, who was politicized by surviving sexual abuse. He runs a hub and shop for survivors in view of the former social services office where he was sexually assaulted as a child. “This is why I picked here,” he said. “So, I could look at it every day and say — ‘I won. You didn’t beat me. I beat you. I’m still here and most of you have gone.’”

>“Half the town is on the breadline,” he said. “There are more people in the food bank queues than there are tins on the shelves. We’re past breaking point.” His shop attracts people who can’t afford other charity shops: its customers are 70 percent Muslim, he added, and, he claims, there was no real tension until Galloway came. Or rather, it lay below the surface, and bloomed with his coming.

>Howarth feared race war if Galloway won. “I can promise you that because people are angry,” he says. “Palestine is a problem. It’s not a Rochdale problem. I believe it’s going to create a breeding ground for the far right and the far left.”

>Until now, he says, “we were getting on, no race wars, nothing like that.” He says he was stopped by a Galloway supporter who threatened to cut his throat if he campaigned in Muslim areas. He went anyway: “I’m a Rochdale boy, we don’t put up with that shit.” What happened? “Nothing.” After I left, Howarth rang to say he was racially abused by a white man on the street, who screamed: “Do you not love Palestine, you dirty white Zionist?”

>Haworth knows that his campaign attracts the far right. He tells them not to come, and he informs the police.

She returned on 13 August and went out for a meal with Assange before returning to her flat with him. According to her account, which Assange disputes, he began pulling off her clothes. Ardin told police she didn't want to "but that it was too late to stop Assange as she had gone along with it so far", and so she let him to undress her. Ardin told police she realised he was trying to have unprotected sex with her, held her down and stopped her from reaching for a condom before agreeing to use it, but she said he had "done something" to it that made it rip, which he denied.
stop being an uncritical tool maybe? even if you're desperate for a left wing victory, that doesn't mean you need to fully grab onto anyone who pings the aesthetics at you for even a split second.

it's funny galloway won, but he's also a rape apologist, and the best part is it has absolutely nothing to do with whether assange did it or not, because galloway is simply that dumb and instead of looking at the proof critically (which in the end ended up showing nothing of note), instead went on the attack against the women in the middle of a literal watershed of talking about how common rapes are in general. this is who your idol is.

Anna Ardin is a US intelligence asset. She deliberately honey trapped Assange in order to put forth the rape claim. Their own statements to the police admit as much - that she was hellbent on trying to nail Assange with a rape conviction.

>According to translations of statements the women gave to Swedish investigators which Reuters has reviewed, Miss A. alleged that during an encounter on August 14, Assange tried to have sex with her without a condom. Subsequently he put on a condom and the couple had consensual sex. But Miss A. claims the condom later broke or was torn open by Assange. Miss A. also claimed that on August 18, Assange exposed himself to her and rubbed against her, an act which Swedish authorities characterized as an incident in which Assange "deliberately molested" her.

>In her statement to police, Miss W. reported that on August 17, she and Assange had consensual sex with a condom. She alleges he later had sex with her without a condom while she was asleep.
>Miss W.'s brother told investigators that his sister said "she didn't want to report Julian if he went and got tested for sexually transmitted diseases." A friend of the two women told police they told him that when they initially went to police they "didn't intend to have Julian charged with anything."
^ That's from Reuters.

They both admit it was consensual and that when they went to the police they weren't intending to charge him. Then suddenly out come the rape accusations.
