Judge Geoffrey W Crawford extended a temporary restraining order issued by a separate judge last week to keep Mahdawi in Vermont. Immigration authorities have sent other foreign students arrested for their pro-Palestinian views to detention centers in Louisiana and Texas, jurisdictions typically overseen by more conservative judges.

‘Crazy’: Forest Service cuts ignite fear, fury over wildfire risks
Trump has cut 10 percent of workers at the Forest Service, an agency that manages 193 million acres of national forests and grasslands, with more firings and a steep reorganization likely coming. About 75 percent of agency staff are trained in wildland firefighting. That means there are fewer workers around the country clearing brush and thinning trees to reduce the risk and intensity of wildfires. And when fires do break out, there will be fewer workers available to stop the spread.

White House replaces government COVID website with one promoting the Wuhan Lab Leak conspiracy
The new site is dominated by a banner showing Donald Trump flanked by the words “Lab” and “Leak,” in a form that would seem cartoonish if not so sinister. It puts the full weight of the fascist president behind two equally bogus allegations: that the Chinese government deliberately created the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes COVID-19, and that US scientists helped in the creation of the deadly virus and then sought to cover up the Chinese role.

With the conclusion of the second round of talks between the representatives of the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran and an agreement to continue the talks, it can be stated that this course has thus far been able to prevent the current tensions [between Iran and the West] from spilling over into a US military attack [on Iran] and the start of a war, as well as stay the hand of the war-mongering Israeli government away from attacking Iran. However, given Iran's currently crisis-ridden economy and gloomy predicament, the complete bankruptcy brought about by three decades of implementing anti-national foreign policies, and Khamenei's empty hand vis-à-vis Trump, our country still faces a range of grave threats from the most destructive factions of US imperialism for the time being. The nature and function of US imperialism to maintain its hegemony by resorting to wars and coup d'états, in order to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries and determine the course of future developments there, is well-known and unchanging - and it has a long history, at least as far as our country is concerned. Trump would undoubtedly seize upon any opportunity to steer the Islamic Republic in a direction whereby it essentially becomes a strategic ally of the US in global interactions.

“You’re looking at the wrong 1%” – Tens of thousands protest attack on trans people
Last week, the UK Supreme Court carried out a ruling on the legal definition of a woman. This was picked up and amplified by the establishment media and politicians to continue whipping up their reactionary, divisive culture war. As we explained in our article last Thursday, this manufactured hysteria around trans people is used by the ruling class to distract from the various issues people face in their daily lives: bills going up; councils going bankrupt; wages and conditions coming under attack; the NHS falling apart; and so on. This latest egregious episode in the culture war has provoked widespread anger and revulsion, amongst young people in particular. Up to 30,000 people gathered for a demonstration in London, spilling out from Parliament Square. In over a dozen other cities and towns, hundreds turned out. Our comrades report that these are some of the biggest demos they’ve seen since the height of the Palestine movement.

Antonio Gramsci: Democracy and fascism
In what sense should one say that fascism and democracy are two aspects of a single reality, two different forms of a single activity: the activity which the bourgeois class carries out to halt the proletarian class on its path? The assertion of this truth is contained in the theses of the Communist International, but only in Italy does the history of the last few years gives an unambiguous proof of it. In Italy, in the last few years, there has been a perfect division of labour between fascism and democracy. It became clear after the War that it was impossible for the Italian bourgeoisie to go on ruling with a democratic system. Yet before the War, Italian democracy had already been a fairly singular system. It was a system which knew neither economic freedom nor substantial political freedoms; which strove through corruption and violence to prevent any free development of new forces, whether they committed themselves in advance to the existing framework of the State or not; and which restricted the ruling class to a minority incapable of maintaining its position without the active assistance of the policeman and the carabiniere. In the Italian democratic system, before the War, each year several dozen workers fell in the streets; and peasants were sent to pick grapes in some places with muzzles on, for fear they might taste the fruit. Democracy, for the peasants and workers, consisted only in the fact that at the base they had the possibility of creating a network of organizations and developing these, strand by strand, to the point where they included the majority of decisive elements of the working class. Even this very simple fact implied a death-sentence for the democratic system. The post-war crisis made it explicit.
