How was this book even published in 1935?
Who the fuck is Smedley Butler?
Why did the FBI shoot him with a cancer gun?

>I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.

>Who the fuck is Smedley Butler?
He was a burger soldier of imperialism that came to regret al the massacres and such he did in later life in a self serving attempt to absolve himself from the demons that come with such behavior. The kind of coward you wish hell existed for.

Are you joking? Most people wouldn't do what he did.. He was crucifying rebels and such all over the globe, mutilating fighters in the Boxer rebellion, Massacring Cacos in Haiti, literally nailing them up to pieces of wood. He went absoloutely above and beyond what most right-thinking people would do. If he was in a european state he'd have been the kind of fucker in the Congo hacking off limbs, i'm sure.
Absolute scumbag that deserved to be forgotten and nothing else. fuck you for thinking otherwise, burger

There's thousands of other high ranking officers that also were involved in US imperialism but this guy was the only (that I know of) to actually realise he was wrong and call out the bullshit. Like sure you can say he's wrong for what he did as part of the US military but come on.

He also helped thwart the Business Plot and gave a firsthand account of the horrors of imperialism straight from the horse's mouth. He was a traitor to imperialism and deserves to be recognized for this.

The US Marine Corps has a weird history of some of the most based leftist figures America has ever seen. Funny considering how it's now the military branch most likely to spawn full on right-wing death squads.

Bruv… If I kill 26 people but feel bad about it later do you be like 'How stunning and brave! what a lad!' of course not, that would be absurd. Why is that next prick any better because he told everyone what they probably already knew to salve his conscience years later?

You're thinking in terms of individual morality, like a liberal. If somebody spends their career as part of a murderous system, and then goes out of their way to harm that system and combat its worst aspects, then this should be commended. You're the type of person who wouldn't want veterans joining our movement I bet. Seems like you're more concerned with moralizing than building worker's power.

Maybe you are right in a way, sure what he did may have value but I still believe he was a scumbag. Do you really believe people change that much? go from imperialist killers to truly anti-imperialists? Because I simply cannot believe that.
> You're the type of person who wouldn't want veterans joining our movement I bet.
Unironically yes because why would I ever trust anyone with my freedom and whatnot who decided to go off and murder for the state? That would be absurd.

Arminius served with impeccable distinction in the Roman army before handing them their greatest defeat at Teutoburg. Stalin was going to school to be a priest before he joined the Bolsheviks. Former CPUSA members testified against the party at McCarthy's hearings. Vietnam veterans were a core part of the antiwar movement. I would say people can change quite a bit.
>Unironically yes because why would I ever trust anyone with my freedom and whatnot who decided to go off and murder for the state? That would be absurd.
No it wouldn't, it would be standard communist practice. Having veterans in our movement objectively strengthens it in many ways, from granting weight to critiques of imperialism, teaching valuable military skills, knowing the inner workings of the US security apparatus, etc.

In Lenin's "Appeal to the Soldiers of all Belligerent Countries" he makes no distinction between conscripts and volunteers.

Happened in many revolutions. There were Tsarist officers who flipped to the Bolsheviks and warlords who flipped to the Chinese communists.

Meanwhile, in the real world, Tsarist Army soldiers and officers defecting to Bolsheviks were responsible for storming the Winter Palace and kickstarting the October Revolution, while warship Aurora, taken over by its mutinous crew, fired on the Palace and threatened off loyalist soldiers. Later both groups became the core of the Red Army and Red Navy respectively. Generals like Mikhail Tukhachevsky, Sergey Kamenev, and Alexei Brusilov, all formerly generals in Tsarist Army, were important in the creation, organization, and victories of the Red Army in the Civil War
