It was a combination of that and people spewing "le Rojava is an imperialist puppet" combined with B.O's dickheadishness of banning anyone who dared criticise Iran. This wouldn't be the first time that leftypol had a coup due to ideological differences and it wasn't the last.

Of course in doing so, this created leftpol which (to its detriment) allowed free discourse. B.O may have done some incredibly questionable things but banning the nazbols wasn't one of them. Banning discussion on Rojava absolutely was though.

What's ironic is that the very same people who like to dunk on Rojava for engaging in real politik will suck off China for doing the exact same thing. And now owing to the splits, the purges, and coups we find ourselves yearning for a sort of "RETURN TO TRADITION" of old leftypol, before all this horrible stuff occurred.

At least after the fact we see that people who talked shit on Rojava wound up being proven mostly wrong, but the scars are still deep. We've basically traded in discourse for schizos, discussion for buzzwords, and just whine about "le breadtube" and other e-celebs. We're stuck often having the same discussions over and over again. Want to have an ecology/ eco-communist thread?

There is a non-trivial part of the community who expect quality control in /leftypol/, and our /b/ was historically used for 'low quality/idpol leftist' along with off-topic stuff, my point being it became a location for 'politics but not /leftypol/'. So there's been a gentrification of /leftypol/. A character limit to combat raid spam and low effort, instant deletion of idpol and "I am a Nazi AMA" threads that's seen as 'shitting up the board', that kind of stuff. There are people who see /leftypol/ as SRSBSNS and care when the most popular posts are dumb bait.
I say all this as the person who ran the Hunger Games thread. I posted it on /siberia/ as there was no attempt at discussing leftist ideas, and therefore being fluff that overshadows chances at actual discussion, but I think that has come at the expense of the potential for developing actual culture.

As a former Mod though, I used to hold the same hope but imho it's due to the fact that this is an online forum which encourages shitty bait posters who never go outside, while actual people want to do something post less, and usually end up in annirl party where their work is actually appreciated and supported. I have given up hope that this board will ever become more than it ever was, and I just stay here for the occasional in depth discussion (which, to be fair, is mostly in the read channel of the matrix) and telling rightoids to kill themselves.
This community is long past its peak.
