"Starets and martyr Vladimir Lenin. The cult of Lenin as a holy starets is characteristic of the bezpopovcy, the Old Believers who deny the orthodox clergy, who since the 17th centuy were persecuted by Tsarist power. The victory of the Soviet revolution finally ended the reign of the Tsar – and the enemy of my enemy is my friend. This icon was photographed in a church in the Komi Autonomous Republic in the mid-1990s."

>Old Believers
Can anyone elaborate on these guys? Who are they? Anti-church Orthodox Christians?

I mean, he is and elder and a martyr, if there's anyone worth canonizing as a saint in recent Russian history it's him.
I'd also canonize Dzerzhinsky and Sverdlov if I was religious.

They're like amish but orthodox.

There's some similarities, but they can't be compared: sedevacantists are so few they're irrelevant.

did stalin /really/ make a kind of pact/treaty with the orthodox church during the GPW?

Lenin wasn't practicing Christian so any characterisation of him as a saint is just shitposting.

Heretical sects suppressed by the Mainstream orthodox would be pro-soviet albeit only opportunistically. A

most of these icons aren't even officially recognised by any church. You can even find icons of Hitchens and Dawkins

they are the "more traditional" version of orthodox church. they rejected the reforms of patriarch Nikon and bezpopovtsy are their more radical wing (they refuse to have priests for they are a product of Antichrist)

it was because nazis created so called "Pskov mission" in the occupied terrtories, therefore it was decided to create an orthodox church that will be friendly to state but will be more "classical" unlike the so called "Living Church" (the pre war pro bolshevik orthodox church that even had portraits of Marx and Lenin in their churches). So the ROC under the leadership of patriarch Sergii was created. It was purely a realpolitik decision to not let the nazis have such a propagandist triumph in their hands (the church was still popular in countryside despite all the anti church propaganda efforts)

the russian patriarch sent some guys to greece to observe the orthodoxy there and they came back with some different versions of practices and books and such and the russians assumed that since they were greeks they must be right about these things and that they (russians) must have fucked it up somewhere along the line and implemented a bunch of changes in russian orthodoxy to bring it in line.
The old believers said fuck this shit and refused to change, got persecuted and ended up driven into exile in siberia (or other places).

In the end theological scholars revealed the russians had it right and it was the greeks who changed over time.

also the rulers of muscovy were getting more imperialistic and wanted control of the church for their own ends

I remember reading an article where some Soviet scientists from the 50s found some dude and his family living in the middle of fucking nowhere wilderness in Siberia in a crude hut. The guy had escaped the fighting in the civil war, or the 1930s stuff and hadn't encountered anyone from society in decades, but somehow managed to deduce from the stuff they saw in the sky that mankind had managed to put satellites into space.
Guy was an Old Believer.
