Protestants like any Catholic or Orthodox member can be equally as reactionary or traditionalist.

All sects of the christian faith can have progressive elements to them- Liberation Theology, The Quakers, the Diggers etc. Hell, there were even orthodox Russian priests who fought the nazis in WWII.

Unfortunetely, there are also reactionary elements to them as well- from your weird trad-caths on twitter, the fucked up policies of the orthodox church of Russia which are complacent in domestic abuse, and of course the whole "protestant work ethic".

Ultimately, I feel like it isn't religion that in it of itself is the problem, but how it is INTERPRETED that is the problem.

This, but also it's important to remember that ultimately the trends of a movement will be determined by its class character. Asking "is X religion progressive/reactionary" ignores the fact that all social movements are animated by class forces. What really matters is their class character, since it's possible to come up with a progressive or reactionary interpretation of just about any religion or sect.

Protestantism was created to be the bourgeois religion. It has had a long history of serving liberals because that is what it was meant to do. So it is socially progressive and was economically progressive compared to feudalism. However nowadays many conservatives are arch-protestants. It is still better than Catholocism beceause that retains a feudal structure.
