Soviet Nostalgia and 2022 Anonymous 2022-01-01 (Sat) 01:17:58 No. 668744
We're going to be in 2022 soon, this year is very interesting for numerous reasons. Across the west (particularly the US) workers are more agitated than ever, the pandemic and general capitalist bungles continue to degrade the quality of life, as costs rise and wages remain the same, the outright acquisition of most housing in the US by landlords and BlackRock makes the prospect of building credit and owning property (things that solicit loyalty to the capitalist system from workers) seem out of reach. Similar things are taking place in Ireland and the British Isles. France is in political chaos and will likely undergo a reactionary seizure of their highest office. Covid, the "refugee crisis", the climate crisis, and the typical capitalist theatrics are still widely in effect starting the new year. Meanwhile Russia and NATO spar over territorial squabbles, and China still seems invincible (from a burger pov, this is the kind of image the media presents, an image that's reinforced by every reddit post or youtube vid proclaiming "this is the end of china, for real this time!") But what I want to talk about is what it means for us, Socialists, to be moving further away from the USSR's existence. The most well known and influential of any Socialist project, the USSR is titanic as a point of reference for us, its successes and failures have naturally become our obsession. Is this barrier of time positive or negative? The remaining pro-soviet boomers will likely die soon, that is sad. However, Soviet nostalgia in Russia will likely persist. As we get further away from the USSR we might also become less emotional discussing it, and attempts to slander its legacy may become less prevalent as it reduces in relevance and as China takes up the mantle as the west's new nemesis(conjecture, obviously). What will happen when we are so far away from the USSR that we might be talking it as though it were the French Commune, an experiment that happened ages ago and ended. Will we be more nuanced and have better takes? Mostly what I want to know is, how do you feel as time separates us from her, Anon?

Humanity sealed its fate when the Soviet Union died. Maybe back to Sino-Soviet split as well.
