He is known for being a world systems analyst, but his training was in economics, himself having a phd in this field. That's why he is qualified to actually combat "pure economics" as he calls it in his attacks on bourgeois ideology.
depends what work you are reading by him. His books on the law of value and accumulation on a world scale are full with statistics and data.
