All of these things happen in capitalist countries, so they are not problems inherent to socialism. Either way, past mistakes on the part of former socialist countries can be avoided. Form your own beliefs; don't end up like one of those people who are exact clones of their reactionary parents.

Communist Poland was a much better place to be than capitalist Poland before or after the Polish People's Republic. Just look at how the quality of life compared

Poland as a satellite state was doomed due to mismanagement and arguably geographic determinism, primarily with the lack of an agriculture sector. The PRL government was heavily focused on industrialization and modernization projects, which were largely successful, but all of that is meaningless if you have no agriculture, the rest of the Warsaw Pact countries had no agriculture either to provide Poland and the countries that actually have agriculture aren't willing to trade with you under the the threat of US sanctions and you're forced to increase food prices more than your citizens are willing to tolerate. Venezueula fell into a similar trap but the PSUV is lucky their opposition is nowhere near as as competent and appealing as Solidarność was. As soon as Poland left the Soviets and joined the West removing all their trade restrictions their economic problems quickly went away.

>He said he had to serve the military So did people in the capitalist countries during that time period. A bunch of capitalist counries still have mandatory military service to this day.>Was beaten by the Polish martial law police Happens every day in capitalist states as well so not exactly a problem specific to socialism either. Is that the extent with his problems with socialist Poland? A good way to get good info out of post-socialist boomers is to ask them very specific questions about life during that time, and avoid asking their opinions on how and why they think it was good or bad. Like ask them how they got into college (if they actually did), not how the education was in general.

You shouldn't blindly have faith in anyone. Neither your parents or the posters on an Albanian bunker-building forum. Make your own research. Read books etc. You might want to talk to your other relatives that live in Poland. Just know that under every system of government there will be dissidents that don't feel at home.

>>680304 My parents also lived in the eastern bloc, Romania to be precise, and they hated it as well. Mostly because at that time, sentiments were very strong to compare themselves with the west, without taking int account the history of capialism, imperialism, unequal development etc. It just was perceived through a lense of "they have stuff and we don't, so let's try their system". I think in hindsight they know that they have been sold a false deal.
My point being, what your parents has some merit as it was their experience, that doesn't mean they understand the socio-economic reasons behind their lived experience. Austerity was implemented in Romania by Ceausescu in the last years and it sucked exponentially for everyone involved, but my parents know jackshit as to why it was implemented in the first place.
Most people are not political and so they will say things sucked, if something objectively sucked without looking into the details. If the governement calls itself socialist, while things suck, and you're part part of a wider wave of anti-socialist hysteria amongst young people in the 80-90s, then guess what, you've taken a clear position

My dad has a much more positive recollection of his time being conscripted in the JNA and doing youth work actions in Yugoslavia. Maybe he just hated commies or his family was bourgeois or something.
