I will state my reasons for why I believe raising the age of consent to 21 is a good decision for societies worldwide.

I believe the age of consent should represent the age at which a person matures emotionally to the point where they can be considered capable of managing their lives without aid from their parents or other figures they hold relations to. I used to believe that the age of consent should be 16 when I was 16(I’m 26 while writing this) but as I grew I came to the belief that 16 and 18 were simply too young as educational and economic standards have risen to a level where establishing healthy relationships and marriages is almost impossible at those ages compared to say within the Middle Ages, 21 is still young especially when compared to the estimated maximum human lifespan of 120-150 years but 21 is at the bare minimum where most youth develop most skills required to be an adult. Such skills include driving, buying things, understanding and fulfilling personal finance, ordinary chores, fulfilling provincial quotas on health and safety needs, filing for different reports like resumes, personal information, passports etc.

I also believe that raising the legal age of consent would allow civilians more time to good education on human sexuality like safe sexual conduct with condoms, ensuring the individual understands how much sex smells(if you’ve had a lot of it you know it smells like fucking garbage the first time), maintaining impulse control, understanding sexual fluidity etc. states that have poor access to sexual education often run into issues with child marriage, domestic violence and rape. Allowing more time for people to develop not just into mature adults but also to learn from elders in healthy relationships about sex would generally improve health and security for most peoples sexual lives.

In conclusion, raising the age of consent worldwide to 21 would ensure that the people having sex are at a stage in their lives where they’re capable of self governance and have the time to understand healthy and safe sexual practice. Good day to you reader :)
