So before social moguls can bring microtransactions to the non-gamer general public there is going to be a wave of unhinged scams selling different flavors of smoke, bridges and cryptoshit. A halfway measure between running with the money in pure fraud and ""owning"" pixels or other marks of status.

The whole point is to repurpose the enormous indoctrination complex of social media into a gameified digital shopping mall with Habo Hotel characteristics. Your identity online needs to be more than escapism, it has to be as valid as your IRL one and you need to surrender it to the completely controlled environment of corporate social media platforms.
All so they can fulfill the pipedream of a completely enclosed consumer, one of which every aspect of their lives is tightly controlled and measured and thus is completely lacking of free will. A pure, uncritical consumer. And since this can't be implemented in reality with existing means, they are trying to build it backwards by offering you a compartmentalized identity within their platform that you are then supposed to grow invested into through the magic of social media and VR. But they don't want to produce neets and gaymers. They want you to keep that identity boxed while you are a productive worker and escape into that world on your free time, on all of your free time.
It's not about taking over reality, but normalizing extreme escapism and positioning themselves as the sole purveyors of it. Not replacing reality, you still need to be a good wagie, but replicating the few aspects of IRL in the abstract, as informed by the best psychologists and other experts money can buy, to make it palatable and addictive and abusive and controlling.

It's like they can't be arsed to invest into making a proper cyberpunk dystopia and we are getting the watered down version that some dipshit with presentation skills sold the managers on. And everyone is nodding along, taking investor money handing reassurances and drinking their own copium that with such investment, surely something in that powerpoint will translate into reality.

I predict a regulatory crackdown on these sorts of scams with cutout niches for The Zuck and others to peddle their glorified microtransactions "the safe/proper" way. Otherwise , these scams are going to be feeding off and sucking the wind out of the sails of bigger projects like the Metaverse.
