as to how it can change, the only way they're going to change is get worse because of the running arms race between big corporate interview processes and interview prep sites that leak interview questions, all exacerbated by new levels of automatic resume screening tools. it's just hazing as a part of engineering class reproduction and has very little to do with enforcing scarcity to manage wages (it's well known that major companies are part of a price-fixing cartel for software engineer wages https://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-tech-jobs-settlement-20150903-story.html so they don't actually need to impose artificial scarcity to keep wages where they want them)

This reminds me how my friend was applying for a rather bigshot bank as a risk analyst. Instead of actually learning any financial prepwork he had to try and learn as many "one guard lies, other tells the truth" type riddles because that's the shit they test you with.

they switch from algo interviews to system design type interviews, which is difficult unless OP is actually a senior engineer with experience building scaling systems or has read alot of books on software architecture. I know, i've failed system design interviews before i studied architecture.

This works for now. My prediction is employers will set up a work experience database. Everybody goes in the database and every job you work is recorded. If you claim to have experience and it's not in the database, your resume is thrown out.
