I mean in retrospect it might have been better to stay in the war 1 more year and not get annexed, but the left literally came to power solely on the premise of getting out of WW1, and also it's not like the western powers would have given Bolshevik Russia a good slice of the peace deal anyway

I know this is a joke thread but Germans got btfo'd in the end. In less that 30 years all those gains were reversed, the Soviet Union became a superpower, Germans were ethnically cleansed from their eastern regions, and Germany was divided for 40 years. This geopolitical victory for Germany lasted less than a blink of an eye from a historical perspective.

Except the Germans were holding them at gunpoint to sign the treaty. Blame the perpetrators, not the victims. After Trotsky walked out of the initial peace negotiations, Germany invaded Eastern Europe, entered Russia and the German army was left 100 km away from Petrograd, threatening the revolution itself. The dream of a revolutionary war vanished when they saw it was impossible for a bunch of workers militias to fight the German imperial army. They literally had nothing to counter Germany with.

While the treaty of Brest-Litovsk might have been bitter, it saved the revolution. The only better decision would have been to take the first, more lenient offer the germans gave him.

it was actually what we call a "pro gamer move" to surrender shit territory to the Germans so they can have an easy re-conquest casus belli with lower aggressive expansion penalties and lower chance of a coalition war firing on the meantime.

The same thing that was happening. Germany continues marching through Russia unopposed, establishes more vassal states together with Austria-Hungary and the Ottomans and probably starts importing/plundering everything they can from Russia to support the western front. They'd might even restore the Romanovs, since they had blood ties with the german nobility.
