Mao was ML, what we now know as Maoism was created by Peruvian and SEA communists in the 70s. Btw can't find the source right now but I remember some Soviet officials met with Mao and his people and the first impression they got was that they definitely hadn't read Capital.

Yeah but Capital was written in German and then translated into Chinese for the PRC and Russian for the Soviet Union, and then diplomatic staff translated From Russian into Chinese and back, that's a lot of opportunity to have things lost in translation.

I was reading about this recently too. In the 1920s and 1930s Sri Lanka attracted a lot of young radicals from London & elsewhere in Europe who became acquainted with the anti-colonial movement in Sri Lanka through student contacts. The first political party in Sri Lanka was the anti-colonial Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) which had an eclectic leadership at first but gravitated toward Trotskyism by the late 1930s.

Actually this is a unique situation, I think it's the only time that a Trotskyist party was the vanguard party of the proletariat de facto.
