yeah i remember cheesin' when i first learned about this.

can this just be a random history thread? I think the shroud of turin is the world's oldest photograph. A 1993 paper makes a strong case for this.

if you mean allen's recreation with the camera obscura, probably in order to make his fabrication look as much as the original as possible. If you mean the original, it's because the body in its shroud would have been interred nude in the tomb, since crucifixion victims were usually crucified naked, to maximize humiliation and suffering from sun exposure

In any case, the shroud was a medieval forgery, and so allen's attempt to recreate it involved trying to recreate the exact circumstances under witch a linen cloth could have been used to create a photographic negative of a crucified corpse. allen's paper also focuses on debunking other theories, such as the theory that the shroud was painted.
