Lain isn’t life, or, “The sad state of /g/’s”

>This post is mostly about lainchan, but to a large extent is also applies to 4chan /g/ and various /tech/ or /lambda/ type boards all over the alt chan universe.

>Many, if not most of the denizens of /g/, /λ/, /tech/ etc. boards on lainchan and across the chaniverse are clearly hobbyist programmers. This is not a slight, but just a note that it is apparent that the /g/ demographic clearly consists of hobbyist linux power users, and autodidacts who’s knowledge of programming clearly comes from self perpetuated /g/ memes and reading blogposts and essays by people like Richard Stallman and Paul Graham. Occasionally, you do get someone who does know what they are talking about, but the minute one person suggests that using a mainstream IDE might be a good idea, they get shouted down by a hundred people who are positively outraged that anyone might suggest that using something other than emacs/vim is ok.

Most of that post is accurate, and it affects all forums not just chans.
However the author outs themselves as one of the pseuds based on their highly trend oriented approach to tech.
Technology is not bad because it is "boomer", and it is not good because it currently has popular support among silicon valley tech workers and/or corporations (these often have conflicting interests).

'Hobbyist' isn't much of an insult when you consider the horrific churning cesspool, which exists purely to deskill programming, and cheaply onboard fresh graduates, who immediately go on twitter and cry about having imposter syndrome.
If you don't keep up with this churn and only write functional software then you are a boomer hobbyist, which I can absolutely live with.

We need more Free Software zealots, not less.

Opinion discarded.

>Functional programming languages (including more esoteric ones like Haskell

This dude's a fucking imbecile.

>But categorically blocking javascript on paranoia or philosophical grounds is clearly out of step with the way the web has developed in the past 10 years.

And you care what other people do with their web browsers because…?

>x84 assembler

Typo, ignorance, or troll?

The rest of his post reads like LARP, especially his allegations of the types of things that are supposedly taught in an average Bachelor's CS degree.

Seems to be defending corporate interests only to be contrarian.

I can't read the blog entry because it's blocked on TOR so fuck that.

That /g/ has managed to retain a sizable contingent of hobbyists instead of replacing them with consumer drones like the other interest boards is very impressive imo. And there's nothing wrong with hobbyists at all - if anything, it's what I expected these niche communities to be catered towards.

That being said, I've always been rather puzzled by /g/'s absolute scorn for anything newer than 80s tech for writing software. Maybe it's a case of "mad cuz bad" for me since I never managed to wrap my head around vim, but still.

Almost all browser security issues come from javascript.

Thanks anonymous.
The author seems to subscribe to a "hip = best" mentality, but his description of /g/ meme culture is very consistent with my experience there.
Many of these /g/ things I chalked up to trolling honestly, I mean, the usual argument to push SICP on newbs is generally nothing more than "2hard4u" and hardly ever anything of substance.

I don't know man, whenever I visit /g/ their catalog is filled with consumer wars over corporate shitware. Even programming languages are like brands to them.

Fucking Indentation styles are grounds for holy war, it's absurd.
