why is firefox is so shit when it comes to media? it either lags or says file type is not supported even tho it fucking is supported. this becomes extremely noticable in imageboards. how can i solve these issues? i want to stick with firefox but i want my media at the same time…

 No.16867

oh also i heard firefox nightly solves many of firefox retarded problems. so should i switch to nightly?

This sounds like a network error on your end. Are you using tor?

If you have a tiling window manager it isn't a meme. Just open the terminal, type 'mpv [paste video url]' and it opens up. Even works for live streams like twitch.

My firefox is proxied over a dedicated tor circuit and all media except incognitube loads fine. It sounds subtly worse though, because its my only program that uses pulseaudio.
A recent firefox esr release had a race condition, so occasionally a random site didn't load while my fan was happily whirring away.

>very unlikely. none really cares of us and none wants to maintain it, that's also part of the reason it was removed. we usually suggest to use a different player for that.

Who the fuck still uses discs that aren't completely incompetent when it comes to technology (and thus would have no need for sleek media players like mpv) like boomers

Nightly is dev/test version of firefox. Whatever they push there will most likely reach the mainline sooner or later, performance increase or otherwise.

MPV is an MPlayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/) fork that uses the gui by default, plays all arguments in the same window, supports more ass fonts and was relicensed to LGPLv 2.1 or later, including the code from MPlayer initially licensed under GPLv2 or later. It removed support for TV, DVB, PVR, BD, DVD, CDDA input and many output devices (framebuffer, images, oss, sdl audio among others), switched to the long option format and reportedly runs significantly slower on older machines. What irritates me the most is that the cli doesn't show deciseconds and uses shell escapes. A small team currently maintains compatibility of MPlayer with FFmpeg, so most distros continue to support it.

As opposed to…? As someone with an old toaster mpv runs the best.

MPV generally needs more performance tuning on older hardware (see their policy on hwdec), has permanently higher resource usage or is otherwise broken in comparison to MPlayer (or older MPV releases):
https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/4213 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/4565 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/5418 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/5536 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/5704 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/6081 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/6141 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/6314 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/6899 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/7256 https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/10284
MPlayer presumably had more workarounds for broken GPUs and MPV shows signs of bitrot at an astonishing pace. I also found this gem:
>You must think you are so clever right? You probably felt like in paradise when you clicked on that "close issue" button. Nothing better than rejecting a request of an useful and cool feature with a passive-aggressive "NYEH HEH, no and NO" and not proposing anything at all. "NOT MY ISSUE! WONTFIX", yet VLC is doing it and you are not, mplayer is doing it and you are not, because it seems you are not competent enough to do so. Fully fledged player? Only when it fits you apparently, all you do is strip features and add typical braindead "fixes" ("muh keybinds were TOO! HARD!"). Is it not super pretty code? It doesn't fricking matter because all you did was take it out because you were obsessing about it being 'unclean'. Your project is useless. Long live mplayer.

that's true but how would they sabotage firefox
what's a browser beyond chrome, chromium and firefox?
