Tech titans bicker over $500bn AI investment announced by Trump
The partnership is geared towards building essential data centers and computing infrastructure for the development of artificial intelligence. While the headline investment is substantial, some estimates had already indicated that developing AI would cost that much. Another notable absence was Elon Musk – the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and xAI; the richest person in the world; and a Trump ally – who reportedly has an office in the White House. The evening after the announcement, he declared Stargate a financial farce.

Can AI save British capitalism?
With the economy in the doldrums, and the state’s coffers looking rather bare, Starmer and his associates have announced a hail-Mary panacea to fix the UK’s ever-diminishing relevance. The answer, according to Starmer, lies in AI. In a speech given earlier this month, on 13 January, the PM announced £14bn of investment in AI, declaring that this would create new jobs, raise productivity, and mend Britain’s ailing public services. This ‘AI Opportunities Action Plan’ is part of Starmer’s so-called ‘great reset’, which he unveiled late last year in hopes of correcting Britain’s course after years of rudderless drift, and to deliver the economic and political stability that his party promised after 14 years of Tory rule. Of course, to become an “AI powerhouse” means competing with the USA and China. But Starmer’s measly £14bn is dwarfed by the $380bn invested by the US, and the $1.4 trillion – that’s 100 times more than Britain! – that China plans to invest in the next six years.

Bloody Sunday 1905: how a spark started a fire
120 years ago, on a cold Sunday in 1905, tens of thousands of unarmed St. Petersburg workers marched to the Tsar’s Winter Palace to deliver a petition. When they arrived, tsarist soldiers fired into the crowd, killing hundreds and wounding thousands. The events of that day, 9 January 1905 [Old Style, which is 22 January in the New Style calendar; all dates in this article are listed in the Old Style], went down in history as the Bloody Sunday massacre, and it marked the beginning of the Russian Revolution of 1905. It was on this day and in the months that followed that, for the first time, large numbers of Russian workers and peasants came to clearly understand that the Tsar was not and could not be their protector, but was one of their oppressors. At the same time, as they fought back, they began to realise their power as a class to change not only the conditions of their daily lives, but the whole world!

THE USES OF COMPETITION by Daniel DeLeon
Socialism is said to be “against competition". The statement is defective; so defective that it suggests an erroneous idea. Socialism can with no greater justice be said to be against competition than doctors can be said to be against navel strings. The navel string has its mission; so long as its mission is unfinished, it is necessary; the doctor cuts it only when its mission is at end. It is so with competition. The only difference is that competition has two distinct, but successive, phases. The first phase of competition sets in with the start of capitalism. It is an inevitable accompaniment of individual production. At first, its wastefulness is amply compensated by the good it works—the steady improvement of the means of production. In the measure, however, that its wastefulness increases, competition cures itself. Its wastefulness points the way to concentration. Individual capitalist concerns, in the same industry, draw closer and closer together. “Agreements”, combines and trusts spring up. This is the first stage of competition. The socialist cannot properly be said to be against this stage of competition. He is not against it, because the socialist does not spend his powder upon dead ducks. This first stage of competition is, today, a dead duck.
