Years ago, there was a time when the African union would directly involve itself in military affairs in the continent. Libya and Somalia are famous examples being you can still find footage of African union soldiers in service to this day.
These days, it seems to have taken a “backseat” approach to conflict where it favours peace talks and ceasefires. I’ll admit, I thought this was idiotic, but I can understand this change. However, many of the conflicts going on in Africa today are self defeating.
The Tigray war ended, the Sudan war saw the RSF rapidly decline spontaneously, and the m23 group has lost all its momentum and is growing closer towards being forced to meet the AU’s original demands. To me, it seems like the union’s leaders are dismissive of war in the continent today largely because they are aware that they really don’t have to involve themselves in these conflicts for the continent to see peace.
Obviously to the reader here, you’ll probably want to know what the Union is doing in place of getting involved these days. From what I’ve read, the union is taking a stronger stance on promoting education throughout the continent and women’s empowerment more.
