Would capitalism still be capitalism if inheritance of private property were abolished but private property were retained? Like if each generation of people started out with zero wealth and zero help from their parents, but were still allowed to accumulate wealth during their lifetime, but then all that wealth went back to society when they died… would that really be a problem?

I think you need to read Marx regarding what private property is. The way you phrase this, it sounds like you think that simple reimbursement for labour is "private property". This is so broad that even labour vouchers would be "private property". Do you think communism is "when you don't own thing"?

no i mean like free to exploit and employ other people but then when you die you can't give it to your brats. you gotta give it back

Yes, it would. Next question?

A key test of an economic proposal is would it survive its own political economy. Those that have accumulated wealth and with it outsized power: material, political and coercive would rationally use their advantaged position to demand their property rights (already otherwise agreed as fine) extend beyond death to their kin. To prevent this would require a harder line on property rights in general that would invalidate your thesis.

This kills the market soycialist

all those thought experiments always end up needing more or less the same amount of political power to enact their fantasy as actually abolishing capitalism (and at that point, why not just do that ?)

You won’t be saying that when I take your private property, which you don’t believe in

Could you define "private property"? The US modern meaning of private property is immovable property owned by any individual or corporation as opposed to personal property which is fairly synonymous with movable property. This contrasts to old Leftist meanings of personal property which is any property movable or immovable for personal use while private property is property beyond one's own use specifically property owned by capitalists for purpose of trying to gain profit off of it's use at the exploitation of labour. Is this a fair assessment of the problems of contrasting definitions?

I think that would be a problem certainly. Consider the following scenario prole.

Your parents toil and till over the earth and animals which they have raised to give you and your siblings nourishment. You want nothing more than to raise your own kin in the same fashion. For decades, your parents toil as do you in order to keep the soil fertile and the animals healthy and strong while your harvest brings many years of security and nourishment.

Then you turn 30, gubbermint says, "GIBS MEDAT!" You now must find something from nothing and start the process over while "Gubbermint" decides to turn the home you lived in, the pasture you've tended and the animals you've raised over to "society".

I don't think you have gamed your idea out beyond ideology.
