With reactionary facists in power and the internet either changing dramatically with the TAKE IT DOWN act and the fuck heads in the house talking about axing S230 (both republican and democrats) The internet could, very possibly, be getting set up to be drastically transformed. Something more like cable television. With that in mind, learning how to use amature radio, shortwave radio, GMRS, and other alternative forms of communication could be critical in the coming days.

You are learning how to use a radio right?
I bought myself a shortwave radio and it will pick up stations as far as china and even the DPRK from my bum fuck nowhere town. We also happen to have a local repeater. If I can say anything for begginers, or, people starting out, get yourself and scanner and learn how it works. I would recommend something easy like a whistler WS1025. Something cheap and easy to learn. then you can make your set up more advanced. Right now I am using a trunk tracker bearcat BCT15X. With aRealistic DX-300 for shortwave and another realistic CB radio. I highly advise cb radio too because cb is great for local situations and emergencies.

While it is good to have alternative means of communication this is just LARP because working around problems while allowing them to happen is same as being complacent. Radiowaves are monitored so unless it uses some kind of encryption it's not ideal especially if you dont live in a major city where you unlikely can pick up a signal with many people in rural areas id imagine unless you just want to talk to random passing truckers for some reason which a good number are uncaught serial killers apparently. I do have a shortwave radio in pieces I could build though but that isnt for communication it's not like a HAM radio I had a family member really into radios but he had died and I didnt get a chance to hang out with him and learn anything. If you want to just message someone for cheaper cost there is ESP-NOW for that then dont have to show off your voice. i dont know a whole lot about it though.

Personally aside from not running into a need for such things id rather see a meshnet set up to run an alternative decentralized internet.

This is even more larp though because you act like people have the means to jiust magically stop the ruling capitalist party from taking away the right for websites not to be responsible for what is posted on them. People don;t ahve power currently that is the whole point. If we did we would have over thrown the borg government. I'm just saying it doesn't hurt to learn something different especially because your magic internet discord world isn't going to be around forever, clearly Communication on the 40m and 20m band can span over half the planet in the right conditions. This just sounds like navie laziness, tbf.. Encryption exists on radios too just like it does on the internet and even still most of what you do on the internet is still monitored and tracked as well so your argument kind of falls flat on its face.

Internet is already barely usable. Social networks are insane asylums with wardens who only make things worse, forums are dead, chans are dying. Most people understand this well and just use discord to talk with their groupies.
Radio is regulated and monitored hard. You need a license to speak through radio regularly. The internet will continue being a better source of information even if participatory sites are dead.
Not that using radio isn't cool. Just don't shove your cool hobby into these issues.

radios are only as good as u have useful people using it,its not the internet its a alternative communication tool.
I have joined a local civil radio chapter promoting the use of the pmr 446 civilian frequencies and i got a radio for all my family members but thats in case of emergencies.
It was also a cute gift for my gf now she can annoy me 24/7 she is happy about it,we use govorot moskva as a code to confirm clear sound.

You need organization for radio. No organization, no radio. It’s just going to be one guy screaming about their hyper specific socialist man and nothing else if you don’t change that.

I have wondered about broadcasting propaganda in rural areas using a pirate radio setup, but I guess you would have to be constantly on the move to make that work. Where I live there is a major radio network that lures people in by reporting on local and regional news, broadcasting sports and weather etc., and then pivots to reactionary talk radio in between the other broadcasts. It's incredibly insidious and probably incredibly effective at sneaking these ideas into heads that otherwise might not stop on that station if it were just a talk station. I wonder if similar things could be done to promote left ideas.

Yeah this. If it wasnt for torrent and the occasional youtube video i wouldnt even use internet anymore given how shit it has become.

So what're ya suggesting here, encrypt files over radio, like dialup of some sort?

>I have wondered about broadcasting propaganda in rural areas using a pirate radio setup
HAMfags are the most spiteful reactionary boomers and would gleefully triangulate your broadcast and tattle to uncle sam. I hate them.

>Le facist are taking over le internet

Last time I look up Leddit still a bastion of liberals and even leftist subrereddits with explicit rightoid sub been deleted or quarentine.

>another communism as a lifestyle thread
holy fuck who fucking cares about any of this shit

as a licensed amateur radio operator, it's not what you make it out to be
the issue with the internet is network effects herding useds into walled gardens. but the internet itself is still largely a based mere conduit. we can still run various free protocols on top of it, like email, irc, xmpp, activitypub and so on. hell, http is still great. rss/atom for syndication, all the various microformats. good stuff
for radio internets, look up AMPRnet and NPR (new packet radio)

oh and all that said, amateur radio is good for emergency comms, and some of the gear comes in handy in riot situations too. I helped a poster on here with some questions around how to set up a net for their local pro-Palestine camp. having some cheapo radios like the Baofeng on hand doesn't hurt
