People are fat in America because of the material conditions of high calorie, inflammatory and hormonally imbalancing "food" being the only affordable or available thing to eat throughout most of the country. Change those material conditions and this problem likely disappears. These people are not wrong in their impulse to shift the social blame for being fat off of themselves–this is not a moral but an economic issue–but wrong to conclude that being fat isn't a problem at all. There is plenty of evidence to show that it is. Capital, however, not wanting to stop making billions of dollars off of subsidized burger slurry, intentionally fosters ideologies of HAES and uncritical body positivity to misdirect the energies of the people affected. The thing to do is not to shame these people but to empathize and educate them.
