Why are proprietary software allowed to use Github to distribute their malware?

 No.18182

I think github is owned by a company

yup MS owns github, that might explain it

 No.18197

Wasn't there something in the terms of use that you have to use it to host OSI approved software? They are just using it as a CDN.

>centralize your decentralized by design version control
>but muh friends (followers)! muh stars (likes)! muh code as social media crap!
>be shocked when corporation exploits your normalfaggot tendency to turn everything into social media
people can just walk away from GitHub, git is decentralized, but they won't because they're addicted to the social media features they use on it.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone use Github to "socialize"
It's just well known and not going down anytime soon
Notabug.org, sr.ht, repo.or.cz, and 0xacab.org are nice alternatives

GitHub laid off 10% of their workers and aren't renewing their office leases the start of the next financial year, moving to full remote employment

shithub now asking for your identifying device information if you want to continue using it as an online cv, so gpt can link it with the mass of other data you spewed forth on the internet with the same device or accounts accessed from that device, etc.
shithub and soygle and even your workplace aren't the government or a bank, they don't need your personal device info. i even hate that companies these days expect you to use your phone to 2FA auth their crap corporate info. they should be giving out "company phones" for this instead of paying google apps or whatever to harvest your device info.

this is a good thing though

reminder that Github hosts tons of proprietary corporate profits, but ONLY uses the non-proprietary code to train its AI copilot. they know they'd get sued out the asshole if they trained it on corporate codebases because they know it's copyright infringement.

does the gpl against this somehow

 No.22807

>>22806
gpl requires redistributing the full source code with license attached, which copilot doesn't do. it's the same type of thing as if the AI spewed out code from private codebases without permission.

 No.22809

>>22807
Does it also require to publish the weights?

 No.22810

richard stallman's opinion is "no", as he doesn't view AI as being software, but I disagree with him. GPL is generally viewed as applying to code running in a virtual machine, and I view AI as being a special type of such code, as it can do most of the same things as normal code.

it's not people wanting to socialize that's bad, it's what people sacrificed for it. you wouldn't say facebook is good for society unless you're insane.
