Mastodon and Lemmy/Kbin are lively platforms. But they still don't have enough users and content to be able to replace their proprietary counterparts.

I just wish something big would happen, that these capitalist corporations would just make one big mistake that would lead to everyone flooding to the foss alternatives. We need to take back the power and stop relying on private companies to regulate our online interactions. Companies are only driven by profit and the dollar bill, these alternatives are created purely out of goodwill and good intentions. Stop the enshittification now! Freedom from private platforms now! Let the fediverse spread freedom to all!

i think a key issue lies in profitability, an in this case, lackthereof. im not rly a fediverse user, bu i was talkin to Zankaria on the matrix abou this, and to my shock, apparently shops and markets r banned across the fediverse? it seems like initatives like these jus drive the community two steps bck. i aint askin them to b data-scrappers an go all RedHat on us, bu instead they gotta redesign their models to allow more buisnesses to see profitable margins on their networks. its a sad conclusion, bu its one we gotta deal w/ in a capitalist world.

They're growing pretty steady. It's definitely reached the point where there's enough stuff posted per day that it can be one's main social, but I do find myself supplenenting it with stuff like cohost and the occasional tumblr search.

People on there need to learn to hashtag more, there's a lot of stuff if you look around, but the usual strategy of searching for your interests when you first get here may be unfruitful even if there's plenty of stuff on that topic simply not tagged as such.

Hopefully with the AI hype train keeps going long enough that the corpos make their users exodus a few more times. We need a new tech snakeoil pretty soon or the investors will get bored.

How would brands being present make a platform have more users?

They will never replace their proprietary counterparts because the main appeal of the fediverse, being decentralized, is the opposite of the main appeal of the mainstream platforms, being centralized and thus being able to find anything and anyone in the same place. Both approaches have their own pros and cons. The sooner you accept that the sooner you will appreciate the fediverse for what it is today.

The problem with Mastadon and Lemmy is, they are social media.

>I just wish something big would happen, that these capitalist corporations would just make one big mistake that would lead to everyone flooding to the foss alternatives
This literally happened on both Twitter and Reddit, leading tens if not hundreds of thousands of users to Mastodon and Lemmy respectively. I was there for a year before the Reddit API change, when a couple of hundred people turned into thousands and thousands of redditors.

This is the problem.

We need to make openstreetmap mainstream so businesses can add themselves there. People with businesses should have their own website too, don't rely on a Facebook page.

I have seen an up tick of more zionist and unhinged ultraliberals on fedi, maybe it's because I have been following more Palestine related stuff though, some of it is just so insane it can only come from an American or Israeli

>pic related lol

>>25395
This is some real American shit, does this dominate the threads on these websites? I'm not a fedster.

>>25395
That's not an 'ultraliberal' it's just a fascist.

I realized my mistake after I posted but to be fair what's the difference really?

>>25398
Nah, not really. Fediverse is mostly EU-style liberals, nerds who just post about nerd shit and the occasional 4chanesque instance with anime avatars posting how much they love hitler.

Overal i still think the atmosphere is nicer, it doesn't have that awful corporate feel to it every website has now.

>>25400
there are also some anarchists and commies ofcourse, which is nice and i want more

>>24959
aren't people congregating on only a few big instances anyway?

>>25444
No, there's just a lot of press of big instances exploding since they don't benefit from federation as an anti-spam measure. Like the big instances that do exist are mostly dead accounts or are very defederated from the rest due to their irresponsible growth, which in turn means that people that start on those instances tend to think that's all there is.

>>24951
I'd be more interested in Mastodon and friends if they were less Twitter-like. It's a format I have basically zero interest in, and I find it strange that that's the one everyone glomed on to.

What I'd like to see is something along the lines of a federated Tumblr; more blog-like, both in appearance and functionality. If such a thing exists, please, for the love of god, point me to it.

I hate follow requests they are the dumbest shit ever.

>>25632
I hate character limits. But the appeal of Twitter is that it's social primarily aka you follow people and they follow you, and you post at each other ig.

>>24953
Why do businesses need to be there? If we're taking twitter as an example, it started off getting the users, then the businesses came in to advertise to said users while paying the twitter company for the privilege. But that's centralized. A centralized platform can monetize more easily. What's the gain for a network of different server hosts?

>>24953
The whole point of the fediverse is that its existence is not contingent on profit. An individual instance can be run by a hobbyist in their spare time, a-la the forums of the 2000s and early-2010s, and in practice, the vast majority of them are.
