I don't think this was ever particularly difficult to do it's just highly illegal to do lol. Same reason all these things are closed bolt. Still at least it's something new, I'm fucking weary of a gazillion 22LR guns.
I think a really cool illegal project would be a select fire SKS. The Yugoslav Wars had some put together in machine shops with a few adjustments so it can't be that difficult, although you'd probably want something to limit the fire rate.
