Adventurers' guilds are a product of Japan hitting capitalism realism.

Not to mention that adventurer guilds are historically absurd. It's just modern late-capitalist japan re-imagining itself as a feudal fantasy land, and all the trappings of magic and elves and shit only lightly cover what is in fact a very depressing genre, in which "freedom" is pretty much just freedom to live your old alienated life except this time you have superpowers and hot chicks following you for no discernible reason.
