>>1389 ffmpeg is not as good at encoding GIFs as imagemagick. maybe one day I'll get around to improving its encoder. which in practice means improving the paletteuse filter

"interlacing" (I've been involved in a cartoon archival project and all the formats and encoding quirks are a pain.)
Anonymous 2021-10-08 (Fri) 13:23:21 No. 1396
>>1395 yeah interlacing is one of the pains. you have top field first vs bottom field first. sometimes video is interlaced but not marked as such in the metadata. also things like
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-two_pull_down another pain is pixel formats, especially when combined with interlacing. fun times if someone has converted 4:2:2 to 4:2:0 incorrectly. upshot is that this creates lots of billable hours
I heard there was a higher res release of MLaaTR recently but for some reason it's cropped to 16:9 >:( Anonymous 2021-10-08 (Fri) 13:56:39 No. 1397
>>1396 Oh that three-two pull down looks like a mess. Converting FPS in general is understandably horrible.
Cropping of new releases is a serious problem. There have been many times they've gotten excited for a new release just to find it's somehow worse than the previous ones, whether it be low-effort remastering, cropping/panning to 16:9, dropped frames, you name it. In rare cases they've actually found a source that does everything great except for a couple of messed up scenes, so they make a release from two sources.

Anonymous 2021-10-08 (Fri) 22:25:02 No. 1405
>>1403 it's probably faster than the other two because imagemagick only allows integers for -delay, and I used a delay of 5, meaning 50 ms -> 20 fps
ffmpeg is smarter and computes GIF frame delays from timestamps
