calling all drawfriends! the English translation we're working on for the Black Book of Capitalism ( >>>/leftypol/1122230 ) could use a nice cover ( >>>/leftypol/1164715 ). post ideas, sketches etc here
I have a Makefile the builds the pdf of the book, and it could be adapted to convert one or two images (front + back) into pdfs and then those pdfs using pdfunite (found in the pdfjam package)
there are many ways to go about this, see https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/17579/how-can-i-design-a-book-cover

I'd love to work on an illustration or collab with anyone else interested. Anyone have any ideas or covers for inspo though? The black book of communism has nothing interesting to parody. I was looking at soviet posters like picrel but don't wanna make them look cool lke how anticommunist posters have accidentally done. Alunya is always fun to draw if we want to do something more irreverent.

How about something along these lines?

WHOEVER DOES IT, MAKE SURE YOU USE VECTOR TOOLS, NOT RASTER (pixel-based) TOOLS.
That means Illustrator, not Photoshop. Inkscape, not GIMP. etc.

This makes sure it can be upscaled and edited much better.

 No.2755

>>2754
yeah this. SVGs can be included in PDFs with not too much trouble. might need to first convert them to TikZ or something, but a workflow can definitely be worked out. I've written many a report that include vector'd plots

 No.2756

>>2754
Sure, but nothing wrong with posting drafts or layouts in raster format, especially if there's a collab. Easier to share for planning purposes.

>>2754
ah I was thinking of some illustration, like the penguin classics covers with the paintings. for raster I thjink the general rule of thumb is 4k is adequate, if anyone goes down that route?

I'm not expert, but yeah, that should probably be fine if it's necessary. I'd recommend sending editable save files too though, because layers are cool.

I think we can all agree that the most common color should be pitch black. How about something that is so dark that you really need to squint to see the details? Like something that is an old public-domain picture of a mass grave or some massacre with the brightness turned down so that you almost can't perceive it.

Translator here. I think the type of illustration really depend of what people want to do with the book and who you will target with it.
You can have fun with Porky memes if you expect to have it mostly passed around here to educate local shitposters a bit more , however thoses who want to use it as agitprop is a wider scale would probably appreciate something looking more serious.
Because unlike the saying, people do judge a book by its cover.

I think it would look better if it was just unending rows of graves from an aerial angle, with "The Black Book of Capitalism" written above it as a normal title

I couldn't find an angle as extreme as I wanted but the last image I found it pretty kino

I get what that edit's going for, but it's messed up by the sky and there being a lack of contrast with the grave markers. So I blacked out the sky and the top of the treeline and adjusted the levels so anything darker than the grave markers is black and they are a dark gray. Could use some improvement or a better (higher quality and better angle) original photo.

it's possible (and expected) to have the cover and back different sizes from the pages. it's best to have a design that can accommodate a bunch of different aspect ratios. simple aspect preserving scaling is of course not an issue

And the sky is just a solid color here, so it's trivial to add or delete a piece of that to make the picture fit any ratio that isn't wider than tall.

I kinda like how at first glance one doesn't see what it is, then it's like "oh, OH", but the gist of >>2770 is there. I don't really like the American flag or chapel imo because it makes it look cluttered and "US bad" exclusively.

>>2784
Solid '"but"' looks like it came out in the 70's or something so looks old if that make sense? Like I'd expect to see it in a second hand bookshop. Cool "retro" edition cover though, just doesn't really pop to me on a modern bookshelf.

>>2824

If you want [color] on the red (or any other kind of color scheme) turn the source image (black and white) into a mask layer for the color you want the grave markers to be. Also probably need to adjust the levels (or run through a threshold filter) to get true black and white tones.
