calling all drawfriends! the English translation we're working on for the Black Book of Capitalism ( >>>/leftypol/1122230 ) could use a nice cover ( >>>/leftypol/1164715 ). post ideas, sketches etc here
I have a Makefile the builds the pdf of the book, and it could be adapted to convert one or two images (front + back) into pdfs and then those pdfs using pdfunite (found in the pdfjam package)
there are many ways to go about this, see https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/17579/how-can-i-design-a-book-cover
t. LaTeX anon

I'd love to work on an illustration or collab with anyone else interested. Anyone have any ideas or covers for inspo though? The black book of communism has nothing interesting to parody. I was looking at soviet posters like picrel but don't wanna make them look cool lke how anticommunist posters have accidentally done. Alunya is always fun to draw if we want to do something more irreverent.

File: 1663045141863.png (90.6 KB, 461x437, human nature.png)

How about something along these lines?

That means Illustrator, not Photoshop. Inkscape, not GIMP. etc.

This makes sure it can be upscaled and edited much better.

yeah this. SVGs can be included in PDFs with not too much trouble. might need to first convert them to TikZ or something, but a workflow can definitely be worked out. I've written many a report that include vector'd plots

Sure, but nothing wrong with posting drafts or layouts in raster format, especially if there's a collab. Easier to share for planning purposes.

ah I was thinking of some illustration, like the penguin classics covers with the paintings. for raster I thjink the general rule of thumb is 4k is adequate, if anyone goes down that route?

I'm not expert, but yeah, that should probably be fine if it's necessary. I'd recommend sending editable save files too though, because layers are cool.

title layout idea

gives off 14yo vibes

to be more constructive it's probably better to give off oopsie whoopsie vibes like >>2753 does
something along the lines of "look at what you made me do!" could also work

Gives off these vibes

Kinda cool

File: 1663261254122.png (51.92 KB, 500x670, Oekaki.png)

you can't see him snapping because he did it with the invisible hand

maybe you could make a faint outline of a hand

I think we can all agree that the most common color should be pitch black. How about something that is so dark that you really need to squint to see the details? Like something that is an old public-domain picture of a mass grave or some massacre with the brightness turned down so that you almost can't perceive it.

File: 1663263796369.png (56.38 KB, 500x670, Oekaki.png)

Translator here. I think the type of illustration really depend of what people want to do with the book and who you will target with it.
You can have fun with Porky memes if you expect to have it mostly passed around here to educate local shitposters a bit more , however thoses who want to use it as agitprop is a wider scale would probably appreciate something looking more serious.
Because unlike the saying, people do judge a book by its cover.

Honestly I like this so much you should just chop off the borders, add some text and call it a day.

>>2768 (me)
Or just use something similar, there's probably loads of bangers hidden away that cover the topic perfectly
Agree tbh a memey cover is funny for posting it to the board but it wouldn't be taken as seriously on somewhere like libgen

File: 1663265274451.png (42.73 KB, 500x628, Oekaki.png)

whoops, meant >>2766 for >>2764

what if you put the title on a tombstone in the front
and there was a giant graveyard behind it but faint

File: 1663265916984-0.png (4.21 MB, 1456x1066, ClipboardImage.png)

File: 1663265916984-1.png (357.59 KB, 623x251, ClipboardImage.png)

File: 1663265916984-2.png (754.03 KB, 660x400, ClipboardImage.png)

File: 1663265916984-3.png (1.82 MB, 1088x738, ClipboardImage.png)

I think it would look better if it was just unending rows of graves from an aerial angle, with "The Black Book of Capitalism" written above it as a normal title

I couldn't find an angle as extreme as I wanted but the last image I found it pretty kino

File: 1663265955301-0.png (428.91 KB, 3000x4500, ClipboardImage.png)

File: 1663265955301-1.png (571.26 KB, 3000x4500, ClipboardImage.png)

File: 1663265955301-2.png (576.89 KB, 3000x4500, ClipboardImage.png)

This is the idea I got in my head.

Did you try the line in red?

File: 1663266146310.png (564.26 KB, 3000x4500, ClipboardImage.png)

Here you go.

File: 1663267542085.png (210.59 KB, 1088x1632, dark cover.png)

not bad
should be blacker

File: 1663278926349.png (151.63 KB, 1088x1632, tombs.png)

I get what that edit's going for, but it's messed up by the sky and there being a lack of contrast with the grave markers. So I blacked out the sky and the top of the treeline and adjusted the levels so anything darker than the grave markers is black and they are a dark gray. Could use some improvement or a better (higher quality and better angle) original photo.

This rules but one thing I liked about the original is the subtle American flag and chapel in the distance

File: 1663281023860.png (151.08 KB, 1088x1632, tombs.png)

File: 1663281797515-0.png (64.27 KB, 1088x1632, TOMBSA.png)

File: 1663281797515-1.png (63.64 KB, 1088x1632, TOMBSB.png)

I made an attempt at combining them

>>2781 (me)
Gotta say I prefer A, although I did it just by removing the black from one and placing it over the other, so that's why there's two of them and there's probably a smarter and better looking way to do it

Waaay too dark

Also >>2771 images #2 and #3 hit harder imo due to the continuous graves aspect (emphasizing the way larger count of deaths under capitalism vs socialism)

File: 1663288985184.png (2.29 MB, 939x1700, cover2.png)

i gotchu, here's a mockup of just that. I did change the red to purple so it's less communist colors, and to evoke that francis bacon vibe.

this looks dope, though the thumbnail looks almost entirely black. If the crosses could be thicker or brighter, plus a nice title and author, and it'd be perfect

File: 1663300916743.png (143.41 KB, 1088x1632, tombs.png)

quick edit to brighten the gravestones

Okay now this is bussin fam
Can the pages be made wider and shorter? Or do they have a set resolution

>>2783 >>2786
>muh contrast & instant readability
Bah! That's the right mindset for designing a video game, but not this :P

it's possible (and expected) to have the cover and back different sizes from the pages. it's best to have a design that can accommodate a bunch of different aspect ratios. simple aspect preserving scaling is of course not an issue

And the sky is just a solid color here, so it's trivial to add or delete a piece of that to make the picture fit any ratio that isn't wider than tall.

File: 1664128136028.jpg (83.66 KB, 514x693, Bare minimum.jpg)

Lottsa ideas, still mimicked the original cover to have something to fall back on.

some inspo could be similar to the third from the left panel of this image where the line going up leads to blood which turns into coin for the cappies pile

File: 1664286753777.png (3.15 MB, 2001x2632, image843.png)

gave it a shot

>>2766 >>2759 >>2753
jej maybe for shorter more memey versions, certainly make nice chapter breaks

This looks pretty professional.

I kinda like how at first glance one doesn't see what it is, then it's like "oh, OH", but the gist of >>2770 is there. I don't really like the American flag or chapel imo because it makes it look cluttered and "US bad" exclusively.

Solid '"but"' looks like it came out in the 70's or something so looks old if that make sense? Like I'd expect to see it in a second hand bookshop. Cool "retro" edition cover though, just doesn't really pop to me on a modern bookshelf.

This is a good default cover really.

fuaaark that one hits hard. Very attention grabbing, and gauranteed to get banned. Big zine vibes, but this cover eminates pure agitation. But. it would also turn people off.

I'm a big fan of this design. I could take or leave the background buildings/flag, but something like this is killer.

Incidentally, where is this picture from? The last thing the book needs is a photo of something that can be even remotely blamed on the left like how right-wingers use pictures of capitalism to trash socialism.

from Dachau prison, you're always going to find contrarians, you have to take a stand somewhere

Just trying some things

File: 1664971526486.jpg (188.29 KB, 1092x1632, fusion 5.jpg)

If you want [color] on the red (or any other kind of color scheme) turn the source image (black and white) into a mask layer for the color you want the grave markers to be. Also probably need to adjust the levels (or run through a threshold filter) to get true black and white tones.

would probably be best to use something that's unambiguously capitalist and not something that idiots say is socialism all the time

You're never going to appease idiots/anticommunists

I just did it in paint tbh

File: 1668120766046.pdf (1.73 MB, 197x255, bboc.pdf)

I finally got around to incorporating image covers into the PDF. feel free to fight about which images to use exactly
I suspect it's possible to use SVG for the covers but I haven't tested this yet

>black background
>skull with molten gold poured on it resting in a puddle of blood and molten gold
>bold yellow font

Tried to tell dall e to do it.
Kinda meh.

I like the middle one

Yeah looks a bit too edgy
Good for a band though

if anyone wants to use ai generation for the cover there is this website i found pixai.art

Why no mention of image dimensions?

I went with A4 for now: >>>/leftypol/1271943

File: 1669637533390-0.jpg (319.42 KB, 2396x1112, commie uwu =3.jpg)

File: 1669637533390-1.jpg (1.24 MB, 3840x5665, PabloJan - Lonliness.jpg)

So proud elements of my ideas made it onto the front cover :3
