General thread for all things related to the field of Ecology, a subfield of Biology that focuses on studying ecosystems. Not sure what else to stay to start the new thread other than may you have biodiverse and healthy ecosystem wherever you may stay at and here is this cool paper I read and a question:

Abstract: The vegetation of New Jersey tidal salt marshes is composed primarily of 2 grasses; Spartina patens , which occupies a narrow elevational zone of high marsh and Spartina alterniflora , an intertidal species. S. patens forms a dense, persistent, thatch, while S. alterniflora produces only a loose lattice of litter which rapidly decomposes.

A comparison between the guilds of sap-feeding insects (for the most part, Delphacidae, Cicadellidae, Issidae, and Miridae) inhabiting these grasses reveals S. patens housing a much more diverse assemblage of herbivores than S. alterniflora. S. alterniflora -inhabiting species are exclusively bi- or trivoltine, while on S. patens , sap-feeders possess a greater variety of life history types and show a specialized trend toward univoltinism.

Removal of only the dead thatch portion of S. patens results in reduced species diversity and evenness of sap-feeders on the living grass system. Trivoltine species, which normally inhabit the upper strata of S. patens , increase their populations on dethatched grass compared to the unaltered grass system.

Both empirical and experimental evidence suggests that the complex microstructure and thatch of S. patens provide a more heterogeneous and protective resource which supports a more diverse and specialized fauna of sap-feeders than S. alterniflora

>tldr: Salt marshes have low elevated sections that recieve more flooding dominated by S. alterniflora and high elevated sections dominated by S. patens. An important group of herbivores within the whole salt marsh are Sap feeding planthoppers and it turns out the areas of High marsh with dense stands of S. patens that form thatch having the greatest species richness of plant hoppers. Not only were there more species but many univoltine(only one generation at a specific time of year) specialists were restricted to this microhabitat. Another thing I enjoy about this paper is that even though delphacid planthoppers ended up being the focus many other members of the sap-sucker insect herbivore feeding guild that are present in the Salt Marsh are still briefly mentioned.


<The Question: What is the local ecology around you like Anon? I for one am in a temperate(Humid Subtropical to be exact) coastal plain area with a fuckton of fresh and salt water wetlands but also many areas of ruderal ecosystems due to urban sprawl and the ensuing neglect of said sprawl.

General thread for the discussion of the ecology of disturbed sites with no more direct human oversight. Think overgrown fields,dilapidated parking lots,young forests,abandoned canals and vegetation overtaking urban decay. of course if someone wants to bring up the historical,anthropological and urbanist perspectives that would be cool too(yeah we multidisciplinary in this bitch). I'll probably bump the thread with charts and maybe some common ruderal species near me which might be relevant to some anons.

Here is a more thorough definition from natureserve:

>Ruderal vegetation is defined as "vegetation found on human-disturbed sites, with no apparent recent historical natural analogs, and whose current composition and structure (1) is not a function of continuous cultivation by humans and (2) includes a broadly distinctive characteristic species combination, whether tree, shrub or herb dominated. NTA but kind of, yes. When I've heard pioneer plants mentioned, it's in regards to recolonisation of an area after a disturbance. In this case, the disturbance would be building or demolition work.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because British wildlife has been so incredibly thoroughly studied, and we have far fewer species to talk about. America is very diverse by comparison, so it won't have been studied in nearly as much detail.

There aren't really any Moors "near" me, either (though near for me is within about 20 miles). There are some in the South, especially in the New Forest area, and obviously Dartmoor and Exmoor. Then there are some in the north too, along with Peat Bogs (which are sometimes referred to as Moors). Do you have any open expanses of grassland near you at all?

well theirs ruderal grasslands in early stages of succession before woody plants takeover that are fairly common within my city. Closest areas of naturally occuring grassland are different types of coastal dune grasslands at beaches. basically what it says on the tin. Coastal dunes that exclude plants expect for specially adapted maritime species that are primarily different grass and forbs. one of my personal fav ecosystems tbh

Ecology is a field that fundamentally breaks the STEMlord/neo-platonist/anglobox type of framework of objects as things in themselves manifesting an abstract idea and separated from all context. You literally cannot do ecology with that kind of approach; it's completely impossible. The only way to understand ecology is as systems.

Maybe this is stretching the topic of the thread a bit, but I thought you would be interested. This guy (that I have never heard before but seems popular) demonstrates what he calls "forest forensics". Based on clues he can tell if a section of the forest was used for crops or pasture before; what kind of storm fell a tree, sometimes down to specific notable weather events; signs of logging and fires. It's pretty interesting but unfortunately very location specific too. But maybe it will give you some ideas to apply to your landscapes.

He wrote two books on the topic, unfortunately I could only find this one on libgen.

On another unrelated note, there's a book by George F Peterken called Natural Woodland: Ecology and Conservation in Northern Temperate Regions which is absolutely fascinating, and which discusses the eclogy of both secondary and "virgin" woodland (the remnants of the fabled Wildwood, such as they still exist) in Europe and the US. I couldn't find if on Lib gen or Z lib, but I found a book he wrote more recently which looks interesting.

They don't always. You can get what are called emergents, which are individuals that shoot up through the canopy. They are quite common in Rainforests, but they occur in termperate regions as well.
There are any number of reasons I can think of that trees tend to be the same height in the canopy; environmental factors such as wind, altitude, rainfall etc, biotic factors like the quality of the soil and species composition (if they're all the same species, they'll all be roughly the same height) and age. If a huge area gets wiped out by some type of disturbance, the trees that grow back in that area will all be pretty much the same age, and thus probably the same height. Much of the woodland in Europe and the Eastern US was cleared at some point, so the trees which now form the canopy mostly started growing at the same time. The older a woodland gets though, the more the age-range diversifies as individuals die off and get replaced.

Its complicated. Almost all species of trees can turn carbon from the atmosphere in "wood" 1gram per day of vegetative season per m^2 of leaf surface area. On this basis it should make a lot more sense to stop deforestation in tropical regions (where every day of th year is vegetative easion and also much large leaf surface area) rather than to plant trees at random at other latitudes. Often it comes down to greenwashing and all the disgusting "carbon credit" bs.
That said, it can be very useful if done properly and sustainably.
Planting trees in urban areas also has quite a bit of use, especialy in the fact that trees are exceptionally good at dissipating heat. If the species are right and they are given enough space to grow properly, they can lower averege temperatures as much as 4°C in the surrounding areas.
Trees belong everywhere and planting trees is never wrong, if done right. It's wrong to think that "planting trees" will magically solve climate change.

you mean to protect against landslides and such? if so, yes indeed we can, there is a whole discipline of "naturalistic engeneering" that is a whole approach to landscape stabiliazion and protection using trees and vegetation. Also applies to waterways. How depends on the specifics of what we are working with.

Not here in europe for sure, most conifer forests in central europe could be considered a better looking equivalent of corn fields in terms of intensive silviculture. I'm pretty sure it's the same for north america. Completely natural multi-layer forest is extremely rare, even in the alps. There are some old growth forests in the balkans. Most forests here are either managed for wood production of some kind or either are very young developing forests that used to be pastures and prairies until the 1950s. Genereally i would assume that the first leaves to fall are the ones getting less light.

anon's reply is exactly right. For me, i was so used to see monoplane forests that it was a shock for me to eneter in a reserve forest with trees 40m tall, it felt like stepping from a wheat field in to a jungle.

I would have guessed the reverse, that leaves farther away from the trunk (I assume these usually get the most light) would die off first as the tree limits its internal flow of nutrients. Then the leaves closer to the trunk would get more light.

Isn't this how it works between different plants? The ones that are below the canopy level put on their leaves first and keep them on longer, to enjoy the extra sunlight that is not yet blocked out but the large, mature leaves.

the classic example is pine vs spruce. spruce leaves are numerous and can stay on for years and years, they are not very efficient in terms of productivity but don't require a lot of nutrients to run. So you can see that spruce branches lose their needles only if they are completely in the sahade for a long time and can't produce enough to sustain themselves. on the other hand, most species of pine (pinus sylvestris for instance) have very efficient leaves that need also a lot of energy to remain active, and so they fall very quickly when they don't get enough light to sustain themselves.

exactly, in my example Pine is a sun loving pioneer plant, optimized to colonize land effected by disturbances (it cannot renovate under its own canopy) while spruce is much more shadow tolerant and grows under both pine and itself.
Different plants are adapted to different lighting conditions to exploit any possible niche in their respective habitats.
