I don’t think I see any JRPG-focused threads on this board, so why not have a comfy JRPG general?

>any JRPG-related games, from retro to modern

>you can share/discuss any news or announcements related to JRPGs
>you can talk about or discuss JRPG stories, gameplay, and characters
>recommending any JRPG titles
>talkin' about JRPG devs & studio is fine too

QOTT for starters : what's your favorite JRPG titles? and what's the reason you're liking it?

As the OP, I'll go first
My favorite JRPG series are Xenoblade, Tales series, Fire Emblem, Triangle Strategy, Octopath Traveler, and Ar Tonelico

Especially I love Xenoblade series, the world, characters & stories make me fall in love with the series. It's truly the best open-world JRPG in the market.
Pyra is my favorite character, she's a sweet woman & I love her personality.
I cannot wait to play XBX DE, the gameplay & open world looks fucking amazing.
Also, I wonder if comrades here already playing XB3, the game has strong socialism & anarchist element. Not a lot of people seems to talk about it, even within leftist JRPG circle

I don't think I've ever gotten that far in a JRPG before. I think the farthest I got was in Final Fantasy X but I still don't think I beat it. Maybe I should go back and play it.

Are there any JRPGs with choices and consequences in plot, quests? It is a staple of western RPGs, but seemsto be lacking in anything that comes from east.

shin megami tensei : devil survivor
Ogre Tactics
that's mostly it
or it's things like Drakenguard/nier where you have to do all the first endings to get the real one so it's basically like NG+ adding more story everytime

>Ogre Tactics
Thanks for recommendation, downloaded that one, it is fun. Cumbersome controls, as all these japanese TRPGS, but I do seem to be making choices, even if I am not sure what their impact is yet. Had to homebrew some rules though, because defeat in battle means game over ->reload. Instead I decided that if my unit makes it to edge of the map, I am going to treat it as "retreated", and after reloading the game after a defeat delete all units that died in the battle, except these who managed to retreat. Lost half of my team in early game fight against necromacer like that.
Also dissapointingly, despite this being remake of a remake of the original game, they still havent reworked the disgusting sprites, that sharply contrast with the beautiful portraits.

In last three days I spend over 20 hours playing Tactics Ogre, but already quit. Died in Chapter 3, couldnt even retreat my main character from battlefield because he got stuck in a hole where only way of escape was blocked off by enemy. I got overconfident, barring the early game fight with necromancer, I was breezing through the game, didnt even bother to keep my equipment and items up-to-date because micromanaging every character's equipment is a hassle with interface clearly not designed for PC controls, and then hit a mission with massive difficulty spike, where enemy was fielding some overpowered troops capable of taking 70% of my terror knight's health in a single crit, combined with some bad RNG.
God damn it, it is frustrating. I will probably try the game again next year or some time later, once I forget this playthrough so I have "fresh" experience.

Tried Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark. Tactical JRPG, well designed combat encounters. plenty of freedom to buildcraft. Couldnt stick to it though, tedious party management where after every fight you have to go unlock abilities or change classes. The way class system works is that you have one primary class you gain experience towards and secondary you can also use abilities from, but dont receive experience. New classes are unlocked by leveling up specific classes (for example character needs to be level 4 mercenary to unlock knight, and then level 3 in knight and wizard to unlock fellblade, etc.). Makes progression feel stilted, as all XP invested in previous classes other than two active ones is effectively lost. And then there is writing. Particularly going into this after Tactics Ogre, with its nuanced down-to-earth story and poetic dialogue, is such a whiplash. This game feels like a child wrote it, clique plot told entirely through short simple sentences.

I like SMT series, but not Persona. Chrono Trigger, FF6/9/10. Dragon Quest 3, 4, 11. Shadow Hearts was solid, Parasite Eve. Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea 5. Can't remember anything else off top, Paper Mario TTYD was cool I guess.

I like how they ripped off FF Tactics. That little spinny job wheel was too cool for no one to steal, but the art looks like dogshit. Also they are aping FF Tactics a little too much. Looks like the flash remake.
