When did townhouses get replaced by detached homes, and why?

>>32146
Don't know exactly when, but atleast after ww2 it was popular to build car-dependent infrastructure to accommodate for the raise of cars and also the dreams of car companies that have been massively pushing their vision of the future.

Townhouses were and are pretty small, if you want density just build an apartment complex which is more cost efficient and gives future capacity

In case of fire they are safer. More ways to escape and harder to spread

Townhouses aren't that small, they're usually rented out as apartments nowadays
They're good as 3-5 story rental residential buildings in "mid density" urban areas
They're even built in some newer mixed-use suburbs to help save space while selling some more homes

Those are some kind of apartment building you got there. Townhouses are small footprint and high density, like picrels.

wish we had a general urban planning thread but this will do

We did, once. But that was a long time ago.

There are a few threads scattered throughout /hobby/ that the mods could cobble together into an Urban Planning General but It'd probably just be me spamming it and Ive gotten tired of doing that for the handful of threads I'm interested in here

>tfw will never occupy a cozy cylindrical window box type thing to sit in at night and brood while staring creepily at passerby and then find the curvature uncomfortable and disorienting but be stuck living there until the mortgage is payed off
it's over isn't it?

Speaking personally, I've always prefered standalone buildings to townhouses. Having gaps between the buildings means you get more green space, which I think is important for a city.

make one then

This doesn't explain how density occurs
Land prices increase as cities expand, causing real estate developers to buy up expensive land and build upwards to compensate through rent leases or condo sales

The Toronto city council just voted to legally allow multi-family homes (multiplexes) in the 70% of the city's land that is currently only zoned for single-family residential
A multiplex is a building that contains multiple "single-family" units (as in, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living area, dining area across 2 or more floors) within it
