/mlp/ My Little Pony

Even though the fandom is pretty dead. I wanted to see what a brony thread on here would look like since I’m a newbie

What does /leftypol/ think about this franchise and the online subculture it spawned? I feel like now that the little girls who made up the target audience are young adults I’ve been seeing more zoomers tell stories about how they were “traumatized” by the adult fandom and it’s becoming more in vogue to decry the whole “brony” phenomenon as “problematic”.

On the other hand though what’s the sociological explanation for millions of grown men becoming obsessed with a little girls cartoon in spite of hegemonic Western gender norms? I’ve read a lot of conflicting theories from academics and culture critics regarding this. Is it autism? Post-Irony? Or is there something about it that just makes it genuinely appealing?

>The zone of proximal development (ZPD) is a concept in educational psychology that represents the space between what a learner is capable of doing unsupported and what the learner cannot do even with support. It is the range where the learner is able to perform, but only with support from a teacher or a peer with more knowledge or expertise. This person is known as the "more knowledgable other."

>The key to fixing poor posture is strengthening and stretching the muscles in the upper back, chest, and core.

>Shoulder strengtheners include scapula squeezes (squeezing your shoulder blades together for 30 seconds at a time) and rows (using a resistance band to pull back your elbows like you're rowing).

>Core strengtheners include modified planks (in which you hold a push-up position while propped up on your elbows) or simply tightening your abdominal muscles, pulling your navel in toward your spine.

>An easy way to stretch your chest muscles: simply put your arms behind your back, grasp both elbows (or forearms if that's as far as you can reach), and hold the position.

>You'll also have to work on your posture in everyday activities. A simple trick when you're sitting (even watching TV): Put a rolled towel behind your shoulders. It makes you sit up straight so the towel won't fall.

A story about a lich that comes out of his crypt for world domination and find the world evolved and then quickly end on the run from a "modern" state security services.
Really liking it so far. Good mix of genres, starting from a standard fantasy world and instead of freezing it in time add societal and technomagical development. Also I find it pretty funny. Not everything translated yet sadly.

its on leftypol that I discovered Out Of Placers (apparently created by a furry artist, which explain the horniness)

Art by Rightoids You Like

Is there any art you like, hell even adore, but it just so happens that the person behind that art just emits hitler particles to the max. Here is my example. Hirotonfa. Really like his style. His comics aren't bad, can be funny. But there is a reason that he got rid of his likes on his bird app account. Every time on my timeline I see some rightoid's post, I just assume its one of his likes. Check the post and sure enough it is. I wish I could just mute his likes, so I can just get his art, but alas, not an option. Shame really but what can I do.

I don't know if its allowed, but this thread is open to all styles of art. I was going to attempt on the draw, but it seems its purely for original art, so decided to create the thread here

Ranking Justice League episodes because its 3 am and I wanna do something for fun after working on my coursework for all evening. Not doing Unlimited because the first two seasons are my childhood nostalgia but Unlimited is not.

Worst story - The Savage Time. This episode features WW2 and does not even once (!) mentions (!) Soviet Union. The burger "We wuz Nazi beaters!" self-fellating at its most egregious. Sucks this has to be the story that introduces Vandal Savage in DCAU.

23rd place - Fury. This story really wants to say something about gender and feminism… but, of course, turns out to be a complete worhless nothingburger that fails to even have a proper climatic battle.

22nd place - Secret Origins. A… passable pilot for the series, even though it visibly takes a massive dip towards mediocrity after the end of the first part.

21st place - Hearts and Minds. Too much sexual subtext for the children's show, period. The action is horrible and the setting is too big for the generic "villain of the week episode" (ironically, this is one story that probably could have worked better as a three-parter) Also is it just me, or are villains Islamophobic caricatures?

20th place - Secret Society. A typical "teamwork good" story, executed rather poorly. Most of the action in there looked like a circus show for me (though there were a couple of awesome moments). And did they really just… killed poor Clayface like that?

19th place - Metamorposis. It is a fun story, but what ruins it is a jarring fact that so much time is put into building Metamorpho's character that the only real way to justify it would be to add him as a League member at the end… and yet we never see him again until Unlimited.

18th place - Legends. Easily the most overrated DCAU story. Largely this story is just early 2000s capeshit writers jerking off to Silver Age capeshit writers… which has almost zero value to viewers outside of BurgerLand. Oh, and the Soviets are implicitly the real main villains in this.

17th place - Eclipsed. Really nice showcase of both full extent of Flash's powers and his character… and nice normalisation of USA imperialism in the Middle East.

16th place - A Better World. A facepalm-worthy soulless liberal propaganda about "dictatorship bad". At least Doomsday vs Justice Lords battle was excellently choreographed and Flash outsmarting Lord Batman was awesome.

15th place - Paradise Lost. The battle against Hades and his undead army was almost flawless and I love the showcase of Wonder Woman's lore and character in there. On the flipside, Faust is both OP and is killed in simultaneously the dumbest and most predictable way possible, and poor Hades is portrayed as Satan yet again.

14th place - War World. Better than the "Gladiator" movie it was ripping off, but still lame. Would have worked much better as a Superman the Animated Series story than as Justice League story.

13th place - The Brave and the Bold. Actually a superior showcase of Flash's character than "Eclipsed" despite being a season 1 story. And it doesn't normalise USA imperialism (if anything, it's the opposite there). Even if the concept of a civilisation of talking gorillas is silly.

To be continued…

Art critique and the "classical" art

What can we really consider a "masterpiece?" And who's to define what is a masterpiece and what isn't? Moreover, how can we compare "masterpieces" of different art forms? I'm asking this since the only undisputed masterpieces in our society seem to be classical literature and classical music while everything else has to constantly prove itself to be as good as them. And when it comes to defining masterpieces in animation, let alone anime, instead of someone more professional like Roger Ebert or whatever we have some random YouTube essayists that gush about how this and that cartoon/anime is a "10/10 masterpiece." And when it comes to video games all we have are corporate journos giving 10/10 to games that become dated after 5 years. In the video game world what was considered a "masterpiece" before would be considered merely decent at best if it was published today. This is such a unique situation that literature never had to wrestle with (it's just letters on paper). And don't get me started on just how many of these "masterpieces" exist and how not every person may even vibe with the same type of game. Say, Mario 64 is considered a masterpiece. But I like Sonic Adventure. I like the sense of speed, I like the flow of movement, I like to go fast and never stop to take a breath. These are completely different feelings to those you get from playing SM64. Same for Super Meat Boy, another favorite of mine. It too makes you rush at a breakneck speed but it also punishes you for a slightest mistake which is very different from Sonic games which are very forgiving even compared to Mario games due to the ring system and the safety required to reach high speeds since Sonic is more physics-based.

they read marx, but do they do the laundry?

i was doing the laundry yesterday and wondered: is "how to fold clothes a solved problem?"

at its core, the most efficient fold for any piece of laundry should be able to be identified by optimizing for stability and shape: you want folded clothes to stay folded, and ideally any item would fold to the same or similar shape to allow efficient packing for storage

when folding, i notice that the first step of any item is to get it to a regular shape: typically a rectangle. for a T-shirt, fold the sleeves in and fold the sides together either by halves or thirds, then fold the top to bottom. from here, there's some variation: if the fabric is thin enough, fold it again into thirds, or if it's too thick, fold it in half or leave it as it is

with larger items like sheets and towels the goal is the same, but you are already starting with the regular shape. reduce its longest dimension by half, repeat until you're done

challenges arise when fabric is thicker, or even for tshirts. some optimizations for folding a shirt include offsetting hems when folded by him width to reduce bulk, folding with "flex area" along the folds

it seems like mathematically, we could identify the optimal folding strategy for any one article. has that been done? can we prove that the folding strategy employed by the kondo method is any better/worse than any other strategy?

/OPSEC/

Operations security AKA OPSEC

OPSEC is the protecting of critical information deemed mission essential from military commanders. Protecting this critical information is through the use of email encryption software, being careful of who may be listening to you (like in a hotel bar), paying close attention to a picture you have taken (back ground), or not talking openly on social media sites about information on the unit's critical information list (military deployments, shortages of equipment or movement of VIPs).

Dystopian anti-capitalist art

Wanted to ask on both /games/ and /anime/ but I think this is too niche of a theme to have many examples only from one art form.

I was thinking a lot about whether or not art should be politicized for a long time. And while I think anti-capitalism and progressive pandering in modern pop culture are indeed shallow there are certain works which reinforce anti-capitalism with their sheer depressing worldbuilding (even if many of their authors aren't leftist). The examples of this are:
>Deus Ex
>American Psycho
>Disco Elysium
>Joker
These works are not necessarily cyberpunk (they don't have to be) but they are pessimistic. They aren't about opposition to the state either so 1984 doesn't count at all. They are very immersive and can be quite trippy, even artsy. Their narrative can be sometimes confusing, even repetitive (with Bateman literally describing every commodity he sees in American Psycho). I want this trippy, immersive experience. I want to see more of it.

Write down your recommendations.

<Confirming the age of ancient footprints

>For their follow-up study, the researchers focused on radiocarbon dating of conifer pollen, because it comes from a terrestrial plant and avoids the issues that can arise when dating aquatic plants such as Ruppia, according to the news release.

>The scientists were able to isolate some 75,000 grains of pollen, collected from the exact same layers as the original seeds, for each sample. Thousands of grains are required to achieve the mass necessary for a single radiocarbon measurement. The pollen age matched that found for the seeds.

>The team also used a dating technique known as optically stimulated luminescence, which determines the last time quartz grains in the fossil sediment were exposed to sunlight. This method suggested that the quartz had a minimum age of 21,500 years.

>“The immediate reaction in some circles of the archaeological community was that the accuracy of our dating was insufficient to make the extraordinary claim that humans were present in North America during the Last Glacial Maximum,” said Jeff Pigati, USGS geologist and co-lead author of the study. “But our targeted methodology in this current research really paid off.”

Source: https://edition.cnn.com/2023/10/05/americas/ancient-footprints-first-americans-scn/index.html

<Summary:

Humans were in S. America 21.000-23.000 years ago, during the Glacial Maximum of the last ice age. Now, either Humans arrived there before the last ice age (where is the evidence for that?), they scaled the massive glaciers in N. America (unlikely), or they traveled by ship (my favourite theory). But this would beg the question: how come they had ocean-going ships? Were they perhaps taught how to build them by a lost civilisation?

Rewatching the cartoon of my childhood - Justice League.
>In the alternate reality, Lex Luthor is elected as US President, kills Flash, and threatens to start a nuclear war.
>Alternate Superman is pushed over the edge, assasinates Luthor, and together with his comrades violently takes over USA (and implicitly, entire world).
>From what little we saw about this alternate reality, it had turned into Georgeorwell1984 police state, but crime (both ordinary and superhuman) was eradicated and it's implied all wars had stopped.
>"Justice Lords" find a way to travel between realities and lure the Justice League from the "prime" universe into their one and capture them, then move on to taking over the "prime" universe as well
>Justice League escapes the Justice Lords' universe and returns home
>Superman STRIKES A DEAL WITH PRIME UNIVERSE'S LUTHOR by organising his pardon from all his previous crimes in exchange for a weapon that defeats all of Justice Lords at once
>The episode ends with Superman picking up the fallen American flag, symbolising that "democracy" had won
>LITERALLY the next episode immediatedly begins with the scene of a squad of American soldiers chasing an unspecified "warlord" in an unspecified Middle Eastern country

Buildings should last

So many fabulous and easily maintained buildings have been demolished because of short-sightedness. We shouldn't be vandals of architecture. We should preserve the Penn stations and the Russian cathedrals of the world, and not just demolish our monuments.

We should rebuild some of them as well. People don't just have utilitarian needs and need a "spiritual" or imaginative side which is opposed to efficiency but which startles you.

Tread for sharing bizzare dreams you remember having because I had an absolutely wild dream/nightmare tonight.

I dreamt that I come into my apartmentand and find Joker there. Joker knocks me down an injects me with some drug, then slaps on me Guy Fawkes mask and gives me a gun. I lose control of my mind due to the drug Joker had injected me, run into the city, walk into and mass shoot people in some bar or something, then run away and faint.

When I woke up (in the dream) Joker is above. He laughs and says that I am now his slave because if I refuse to cooperate with me, Joker would report me to cops for mass murder. I agree to serve Joker, and next day he visits me again, injects me again with a drug that makes me go murderous psycho, slaps on me Guy Fawkes mask again, and then me and Joker together go and rob a bank.

Then we return to (Joker's ?!) home and there is Vendetta guy standing there. He says he is very, very angry at Joker for using his likeness like that, and would brutally punish him now. Vendetta and Joker fight, and then Vendetta removes his mask, revealing the burned flesh under it. The sight terrifies Joker so much he immediatedly faints (dies?)

Vendetta tells me not to look at his face, but I still take a glimpse of his face. It looks so horrible I wake up in real life from it.

The wildest thing? I didn't read/watch V for Vendetta since my college years which ended 5 years ago… And didn't watch anything Batman related for even longer, probably.

Europe & feces/fart obsession - what gives?

Mozart & family:
>Well, I wish you good night, but first,
>Shit in your bed and make it burst.
>Sleep soundly, my love
>Into your mouth your arse you'll shove.

Broader German culture:
>In German folklore, one finds an inordinate number of texts concerned with anality. Scheiße (shit), Dreck (dirt), Mist (manure), Arsch (ass), and other locutions are commonplace. Folksongs, folktales, proverbs, folk speech—all attest to the Germans' longstanding special interest in this area of human activity. I am not claiming that other peoples of the world do not express a healthy concern for this area, but rather that the Germans appear to be preoccupied with such themes. It is thus not so much a matter of difference as it is of degree.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozart_and_scatology

James Joyce:
>At every fuck I gave you your shameless tongue come bursting out through your lips and if I gave you a bigger stronger fuck than usual fat dirty farts came spluttering out of your backside. You had an arse full of farts that night, darling, and I fucked them out of you, big fat fellows, long windy ones, quick little merry cracks and a lot of tiny little naughty farties ending in a long gush from your hole. It is wonderful to fuck a farting woman when every fuck drives one out of her. I think I would know Nora’s fart anywhere. I think I could pick hers out in a roomful of farting women. It is a rather girlish noise not like the wet windy fart which I imagine fat wives have. It is sudden and dry and dirty like what a bold girl would let off in fun in a school dormitory at night. I hope Nora will let off no end of her farts in my face so that I may know their smell also.

When does an inspired project become its distinct entity?

I've been thinking about whether 'ripping off' or taking inspiration from something can turn into its own distinct thing. I recently read Rikki-oh, which is very blatantly ripping off Fist of the North Star. The protagonist is a strong, mostly silent badass who uses ancient Chinese martial arts that gives him essentially superpowers, he has a special scar on his torso from a wound and his initial goal is to save his girlfriend. However, after reading both both Rikki-Oh and Fist of the North Star, Rikki-oh very quickly becomes its own thing. yes it took a lot, but it actually has a more concise story, in my opinion, the world is different and its gore became more creative.
Warhammer 40k is another larger example that very blatantly took inspiration from Dune (God Emperor, technological stagnation after the AI robot uprising, space feudalism and massive cultural deviation between people's), Foundation (psykers), Judge Dredd (hive cities and Arbites), and with a hint of Michael Moorcock (Chaos gods). However, after decades of what may have been copy-pasting all these element formed to become their own thing and are now distinct from their original inspirations. Take the Necrons for example; they were originally space terminators, but as their lore expanded (taking inspiration from the fantasy counterpart, the Tomb Kings), they became a tragically sort of species. born as essentially cancer-ridden humanoids with a strict social system who sought escape and were tricked by a wicked entity's to lose their flesh and personhood, with the Imperium, it's God Emeopeor relgion is more similar to the ancient Aztecs rather then anything Dune and the Eldar, went from genetic Elves in space to what were essentially a tall cat-like humanoid bioweapons that ruled the galaxy for 60 million years and fell into such extreme decadence and degeneracy that they essentially created a god of decadence and degeneracy that ultimately destroyed them all. Now, they exist as galactic nomad ninjas. There's a good chance that many of the writers for Warhammer 40k lore have not actually read any of the original material 40k took inspiration from, they perceive it as its own distinct product.

Post "representation" of minorities in media (any) that seriously made you contemplate a conspiracy theory that they were written&directed by crypto reactionaries deliberately trying to make said minorities look awful.
R: 12 / I: 1
I would never forgive this overrated reactionary weak-chinned motherfucker for ruining fantasy forever via choosing the word "race" to describe difference between elves, orcs, dwarfs and hobbits, instead of "kind", "kindred", "ilk" or something other. Now all speculative fiction (no, really, not just fantasy) that deals with multiple sapient species co-existing in the same setting is connected with a real-world race theory/white supremacy, which is absolutely monstrous. You're a fucking linguist, Professor, you SHOULD have known better!

Ranking installments of everyone's favorite transphobic white angloid attempt at writing shonen with antisemitic undertones because my 50 y.o. mom is a Rickman/Snape fan and forces our entire family to rewatch all of the movies each holiday season.

Worst - Prisoner of Azkaban. Really unpopular opinion, but I feel this is the messiest out of the early books, with a generic "believe in yourself to deafeat a monster (dementor)" shonen message told with the help of the atrocious time travel subplot (JKR's worst mistake besides, y'know, becaming a far-right grifter) and untolerable for me at least amount of quidditch padding.

5th place - Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows (ranked as one book because HBP is just a set-up for DH's story, it would have pretty much zero literary value as a standalone book) A dissapointing end to the series. Voldermort fully turns into a cartoon villain and stops being a credible threeat to any minimally adult reader (despite showing signs of being capable of more in GoF and OoF). Also I hate how Voldemort invokes Hitler symbolism despite, if anything, having more in common with Grand Wizard (pun intended) of the Klan. The story becames irredeemably reactionary, with Voldemort being defeated by the mystical "power of love", Dumbledore being venerated as a saint by the narrative (despite there being a fucking perfect set-up to make him a "second main villain"), Hermione accepting the naturality of the House Elves' slavery and Harry becaming a wizarding cop treated as a happy ending.

4th place - Philosopher's Stone. I know it was intended as purely children's book originally, but it still looks intolerably cartoony and cheesy compared to the later parts.

Native Americanization in media

I don't know if there's a specific trope name for when a group of people in media are 'coded' as Native Americans, I first noticed this in the depiction of the Great Khans in FNV, particularly in the character of Papa Khan and his manner of speaking, Another instance is in a DLC for the game Total War, where you play as the Nanman people who are portrayed as Native American-esque and I recall seeing a clip on YouTube (which I am currently unable to find) that depicted the Montagnard not only as Native Americans-likg but also featured Native American actors portraying them

Travel is Kinda Bullshit

We have no history of travel. So many people out there say they love traveling and will happily tell you about all the places they been to and sights they’ve seen and where they want to go to next. It’s also one of the first things people say they would do if they had more time and money.

But traveling sucks. It’s expensive and tedious. You have to pack, organise a passport, deal with airports, security and there’s just so much waiting! And that’s if everything goes to plan and to schedule. Things can easily get canceled or postponed. Then you’ve got jet lag to deal with, different currencies, language barriers, etc.

Even if you’re not going overseas/flying it’s not like road tripping is any better. Sitting in a car for hours on end just plain sucks.

And don’t think I’m only hating on the actual transport, being away from home sucks too. Whether you’re staying in a hotel or an Airbnb or camping or whatever, you’re away from home and all your things; you’re own bed, your own room, your pets, all your other bits and pieces that make your home your own.

>Has simultaneously enough power to posess the entire nation and make it rebel against an innocent Tsar (LOL) and not enough power to prevent himself from accidentally drowning.
>Is in the movie [ostenshibly] based on a real nation's 20th century's history and yet has a talking bat as a minion. Which is even more cursed that is Disney's Pocahontas that is [ostenshibly] based on a real nation's 17th century's history having sapient animals as part of the story.
>Said bat is his ONLY shown minion and the only person he really interacts with, despite him boasting in his villain song about having multiple "minions".
>Talking about his villain song, it has such a banger as "It scared me out of my wits; A corpse falling to bits! Then I opened my eyes; And the nightmare was, me!". How am I supposed to be scared of this guy when he literally admits of being scared of himself?!
>His curse makes him unable to die while at least one of Romanovs is still alive. Wants to kill the last of Romanovs. But does not want to die. WHAT? …Voldemort a decade later did a similar trope better.
>Also, makes Voldemort look like a genius when it comes about caring about the safety of his phylacteria.
>Hey, why a 100% Slavic dude is a literal D&D-esque Lich there? …At the second thought, this one actually makes sense since Liches in D&D are partially based on the Slavic tale of Koshey the Immortal… unlike all of the points listed above.
>The movie probably really doesn't even need him, with its real conflict being Anya/Anastasia having to choose between her royal birth family and her commoner found family/love interest since she can't have both at the same time.

Had watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit? for the first time a couple days ago. Was shocked by both the titanic work that must have been put into making this movie (all animation is hand-drawn! And then merged with life-action actors by "manual" editing, without any computer assistance! In 80s, during the "dark age" for western animation!) and by how modern the writing is. I geniunely would have never guessed this script was written in 1988, because I can perfectly imagine this story being written in, like, 2015, and it honestly would make more sense in my head.

>Radio drama (or audio drama, audio play, radio play, radio theatre, or audio theatre) is a dramatized, purely acoustic performance. With no visual component, radio drama depends on dialogue, music and sound effects to help the listener imagine the characters and story: "It is auditory in the physical dimension but equally powerful as a visual force in the psychological dimension." Make sure to post about it and encourage more people to become burdens like you. Once enough people do this, their system collapses. Also always remember how over half the population sided with the government? make them pay and enjoy it too. Star Trek

Talk space socialism to me. Was recently rewatching a few series with my fiance, both old and new Trek, and we both feel like Deep Space 9 is our favorite series (closely followed by TNG).

Everything else in order from best-to-worst would be:
Deep Space 9
The Next Generation
Voyage Home
Wrath of Khan
Undiscovered Country
Enterprise
Picard Season 3
Lower Decks
Voyager
Prodigy
Motion Picture
Strange New Worlds
Original Series
Beyond
First Contact
Generations
Discovery
Nemesis
Insurrection
Star Trek 2009
Into Darkness
Picard Seasons 1&2

Skipped a couple of the TOS movies we haven't seen cause it wouldn't be fair to rank them. Also split Picard up since the 3rd season is basically a different show both in quality and tone.

/INT/ - Intuition

Is your intuition ever scarily accurate? I’ve intuited running into certain people. I went to the library 3 days ago because I just knew my crush would be there even though he’s a commuter who didn’t attend class that day. I don’t know how I knew that. I just followed wherever my body took me because I knew it would take me to him. Another example, there’s someone that I know I will run into on my campus (who doesn’t live anywhere near it) by the end of the month. I’ve known it for months and I’ve been trying to avoid running into this person but I know it’s the universe’s will we run into each other.

how do you develop better intuition? I can usually tell that something horrible is going to happen on days when horrible things do happen but that's not really useful

Arcane S2

Season 2 was terrible. S1 was alright and the emotional core was good enough that I could look pass glorifying lumpen behavior and passing it off as "revolutionary" because capitalist media will never portray a revolutionary without making them do dumb shit like killing a baby on screen so w/e.

But S2 went full retard and became marvelslop. Multiverse, time travel, world ending threat that everyone must unite against, holy shit it was just so bad in every way. The stakes became ridiculous, every character became a bastardized caricature of themselves, people would do really stupid things just to drive the plot forward where the writer wanted it to go (whereas in S1 it felt like the other way around where the plot was happening because of natural and realistic reactions that the cast all had bouncing off each other).

There was a really good way someone else described it: basically Arcane S2 is a show that everyone thinks they will get when they hear the words "animated show based on league of legends", and Arcane S1 is a show that people think they will get when they hear the words "live action historical drama".

/Jung/

Hes the bane of NPCs and the establishment. He single handledly kept the value of mythology, supernatural and the paranormal alive during the peak years of modernism and post modernism. Academics, modern Europeans, and experts have been trying to destroy him ever since.

But the establishment is in decline. They have to watch as all their worthless ideas (like new-atheism, and moral relativism) all fall into the waste bin of history while Jungs ideas get stronger and stronger.

Jung's major beliefs is that a primary goal of every human is/ought to be the process of individuation (the processing of becoming a self)–which he wrote on the backdrop of rising collectivistic pressures via shifting global geopolitics. For Jung, there is a distinction between ego and self, where ego is a narrow band of consciousness that exists primarily in a space of tension between unconscious factors (which includes shadow) and social presentation (persona).

He further believed that people share a collective unconscious, which is that we inherit cultural motifs and symbols that then get continuously represented across different cultures and time; however, they manifest in a way relative to the culture of the time. So, 'Hero' may be an archetype, meaning stories involving heroes transcend cultures and time, but 'Batman' is a specific manifestation that emerged in American culture in the past century.

One archetype then is the 'shadow', which represents unconscious elements that are in conflict with our ego ideal (how we think we should behave or be–especially in front of others). These can include unfulfilled desires, fears, perceived weaknesses, shame-inducing idiosyncrasies, etc. The idea is that the 'self' in the Jungian conceptualization involves actively seeking these archetypes out via either psychological analysis or a process Jung calls Active Imagination. In either case, the general idea is to actively confront these aspects of our unconscious and integrate the awareness–and the process by which the awareness was obtained, into our conscious understanding of self.

Jung's ideas overlap with the likes of Jacques Vallee in terms of the intersection of psychological concepts and the mystical. Myth and folklore were of prominent sources of information in Jung's formation of his ideas; however, there is an impact of poor translation and creative liberties taken in sources Jung used unwittingly.

Any Jungian insights are welcome

Fossilized Giants are everywhere and there really is a conspiracy in place to hide this fact (see stellium7 Mountgo videos where google earth censored the eye socket of a giant elephant he was studying). My guess would be that they don't want the general population to know that the world was created because they want the serfs to be uneducated atheists or agnostics. I guess they forgot that all secrets come to light and everything which is buried will be unearthed. Ever wonder why it's called the "FACE" of the earth?

Episode 1: Escape from Sde Teiman
Episode 2: TBD ("Operation: al-Aqsa Flood" maybe? Doesn't fit the timeline unless the PC was imprisoned before al-Aqsa)
Episode 3: TBD ("Die, Bibi, Die!" maybe?)
Episode 4: TBD
Episode 5: TBD
Episode 6: TBD

## Story

You are $NAME, a Palestinian born in Gaza.
You have been imprisoned in the Sde Teiman detention camp for over a year, and tortured daily.
Your entire family was murdered in an aerial bombardment by the IDF, including your spouse and your 6-month old baby.
You somehow managed to make and conceal a shiv, killed one of the guards and took his pistol.
Your goal is clear: escape from Sde Teiman and free your people!

## Art direction

More realistic, less garish than WOLF3D.
Still compatible with WOLF3D's palette though.

Try to keep the "theme" of each texture, sprite and sound such that dropping VSWAP.WL6 etc into the original game makes sense, even with the original levels.

## Enemies

Since the IDF prides itself on being "progressive" it makes sense that there should be some diversity in enemies.
Therefore some female enemies is a must.

Guard -> IDF grunt
SS -> Mossad maybe?
Dog -> Dog?
Officer -> Secretary (female)
Mutant ->
Hans Grösse -> Whoever is the actual boss of Sde Teiman
Doctor Schabbs ->
Fake Hitler ->
Mecha Hitler ->
Adolf Hitler ->

## Weapons

Knife -> Shiv
Pistol ->
Machine Gun -> AK-47 or whatever the IDF uses?
Chaingun ->

## Tasks

* Script Blender to render sprites from the command line, from all 8 directions
* Build system for audiohed.wl6 and audiot.wl6
* New maps! (gamemaps.wl6 and maphead.wl6)

## Nice-to-haves

* Ability to pick between male or female protagonist. Or maybe hide their face so that it could be either

The average life expectancy in my home country is around 89 years for men and 93 years for women. Living longer has long been the norm in industrialized countries. But 89 years is too short for me and many people feel the same way. I would rather prefer 150+.

For example, Sam Altman recently invested 180 million dollars in a start-up that promises an extra 10 healthy years, Peter Thiel is investing in "young blood", i.e. blood from young people that is injected into old people to achieve a rejuvenating effect.

What are Laion's tips for living longer and healthier? Standard tips are intermittent fasting, exercise, vegetables and a small amount of nuts every day. Will we be able to replicate future therapies based on immunosuppressants ourselves? If so, how complex is that?

Are there any interesting studies that show how you can effectively prolong your life?

/Cleaning/

Absolutely no idea what board to post this thread to but let's have a thread on cleaning and tidying, and what tips and techniques are great for being domestic.

Just bought a reachy grabber to use around the house, i.e. the thing folk use for litter picking. I get that a lot of folk use them while being disabled but they legit makes tidying so much quicker and less tedious with getting stuff off the floor if you're ADHD like me and leave clothes and bits of paper and things everywhere during busy schedules. Also way more fun because it lets me pretend my grabber is a hungry monster, biting all mess within my path.

Manhattan Project? Infiltrated. Hollywood? Infiltrated. British Foreign Office? Infiltrated. West German Chancellor's Office? Infiltrated. Your high school locker room? Heh you know it
What made Soviet intelligence so good at subverting and infiltrating every fucking organization on this planet?
I think for awhile they could recruit intelligent people who were also idealistic about communism which is international in scope. It wasn't just about money or whatever (and they didn't have any money). Bolsheviks were also by nature conspiratorial and believed in combining both "legal" and "illegal" methods for the pursuit of their aims which developed out of the conditions of pre-Soviet Russia. Their strategy was a kind of dual-power seeking where they'd target non-communist groups (which may not have been previously considered as vectors for political activity, like theatre groups or whatever) for infiltration and subversion. Cadres are basically like agents who get inside other groups and try to maneuver them in some kind of way rather than the Communist Party showing up and being like "we're here now!" That's more like after a coup d'etat led by communist infiltrated organizations including the military.

What are your thoughts on portraying inherently evil, simple, fictional characters as revolutionarie

This isn't about the vilification of real-life revolutionaries or even characters that were from the start had any sort political context, but characters who were always meant as simple villains. For me the most obvious case is with the Decepticons and their leader Megatron. they were a toy series turned into an animated show where they were just evil for the sake of evil. It was good robots who would turn into fire trucks, ambulances, and taxis versus evil robots who turned into fighter jets and tanks. Sometime around the late 2000s, there was both a fandom and source material change to the origins of this faction, where they changed their origin to be moderately political, making Optimus and Megatron former friends and casting Megatron as someone born in the lower classes who became a revolutionary but went "too far" and caused a 4-million-year-long war which destroyed his planet

Modern horror movies are fucking garbage

Examples of movies: It Follows, Terrifier, The Conjuring, It, Babadook, Evil Dead Rise, Nun, The Witch, Insidious, Paranormal Activity, Sinister,
Hereditary, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, A Quiet Place

Modern horror movies suck ass. They feel more like Netflix TV series with the amount of stupid drama between characters. I don’t give a fuck about the character’s romantic relationship in a horror movie. Classic horror movies did not have this stupid bullshit in them. Modern horror movies try so hard to make you care so much about the characters. Most of the time they are these generic nobody actors no one gives a fuck about. They feel more like family drama/romance at times than horror. People watch horror movies for the antagonist. That is why we are watching them for the villain.

Most of these movies have the same kind of bullshit monster. There’s 5000 of these possession style movies where the monster is a human with yellow eyes or something that screams and runs at protagonist. It’s boring af.

These movies all have the same kind of shitty stringy scary music or something that tries to sound like the 80s but sucks ass.

Obligatory jump scares with loud sound effect. They suck at actually creating a scary atmosphere so they just resort to a loud jump scare and have their shitty human monster with scary eyes run screaming towards the screen.

These movies can’t do anything right so they will also be extremely gory to make up for it but gore is actually boring af once you are desensitized to it. Terrifier sucks ass. It’s absolute dogshit and the only people who are praising it must be younglings who’ve never watched the classic slasher films that are a million times better than this steaming pile of feces.

Notice they will also try to convey some kind of “deep meaning” to their film. Instead of just making a scary film with a great atmosphere and monster they are trying to make pretentious hipster garbage like failed attempt to be like Stanley Kubrick or something.

I like plants in general. I also firmly believe they can feel your intention somehow. If you care about them, if you feel positively about them they react positively too. It sounds bs but that's my experience with them.
Cost nothing to try if you have a plant yourself.
Another thing people say they cam detect is music. I have a theory that it is not so much the music itself rather patterns in vibration.

Tobacco. The victorians prescribed it for non serious mental illnesses like insomnia. It really works.

I smoke rollies and specifically pueblo and american spirit as they don't contain as many chemicals. It's just plant matter and cancer is probably caused by the fucking deathsticks they call cigarettes.

Preferably smoke your own home grown stuff but I live in a cold climate.Native Americans say it’s to keep away negative entities

loquat appears to have anti-diabetic and even anti-cancer properties

Rosemary is general anti inflammatory and so is sage. I think most mental illness is caused by brain inflammation as a result of trauma. These herbs all have anti inflammatory properties. So do polyphenols in berries and colored fruits.

Chanca piedra (AKA Stonebreaker) is a traditional peruvian herbal remedy for kidney and gallstones

I cut the top off pineapples and grow them in buckets. They handle extreme heat and cold really well. Then I take the new pineapple leaves and eat them. Same thing with melon plants I grow from saved seeds of store bought melons.
Some make pineapple or melon leaf tea but I put the leaves in my blender with frozen berries
It kills parasites too

I use herbs as teas, but not regularly. Green mint is the best, occasionally I will use thyme or rosemary.
Planning to do some wild herb gathering when the spring comes.
I have some dried juniper(us communis) berries and was told they could be used as incense, haven't tried that yet.

For anyone interested in dreaming (lucid or not), I highly recommend mexican dream herb (calea zacatechichi)

Conspiracy theories

Which ones do you believe in?
Conspiracy theories are so interesting. I love hearing about them, especially if it's weird stuff.
However I dislike how the term conspiracy theory is used to discredit people sometimes. Something that used to be called a conspiracy theory is that companies and government organizations collect as much data as possible about everyone.

I also believe that powerful groups have a lot of control over things like the other anons mentioned.

>Music played on the radio and as it's sold is played at 'dead' frequencies, and the melodies are simple and uninspiring. Buildings are becoming uglier, making for less spiritually enriching surroundings, and creating less pride in the nation. Our food and water has become more unnatural, and our devices are made to hook us and detach us from reality, from spiritual saturation. The media is deliberately uninspiring and creates a sense of doom and dishonesty, and division, and humans are being encouraged into engaging in hedonism to avoid forming long term relationships, and distracting from the spirit with the flesh. Which leaves you empty.

==/Gnosticism/Communism/Babylonia/==

Thread to discuss ancient concepts and ideas on past Edens. The idea of the demiurge and the "heretical" concepts many early gnostic Jews had of Jesus, Satan etc. are the first things many people think of when the subject of Gnosticism is breached. To me however all that stuff is secondary. The primary focus of Gnostic worldcoew is the Spirit/Soul dichotomy and how it relates to the Universe and the afterlife.
<Gnosticism is not about belief. "Gnosis" is the greek word for knowledge, and the entire endeavor of Gnosticism is to acquire true knowledge, of the Self and where we come from.
In Gnostic texts Jesus doesn't teach you to believe anything, he simply says to examine yourself.
>Protip, anyone who's trying to gatekeep Gnosticism is probably just a Christian (read: circumcised psychopaths who love the demiurge) who doesn't want Gnostics to grow in number.

Mass Psychology

Lets Predict the future, by analyzing Mass Psychology

So far we got repeating cycles of chaos and order, the shifting of mass opinion and acceptance.
We want to collect significant soykafs of the past and, what it results to in the future.
What the general public out-ruled in the 70s is now commonly popular, while old fashioned values are despised mostly.

I.e.
Public opinion impact of the Vietnam war, resulting peace movements and general sentiment.
The Ukraine war, and the general shift towards polarization in the public, that means siding with either Russia or the west.
Public opinion about homosexuality back then, and its massive shift towards glorification nowadays.
Periods of darkness and dogma, Periods of enlightenment and liberation

So on, you get the point, we collect what changed and by that maybe are able to predict further changes.
Again, its just to guess and assume, for the fun. Dont eat another. Just throw in contradiction to the past, which differ from previously mainstream dogma.

It would be interesting to build a sinusoidal model of public opinion shifts, which might be composed of various important factors stacked over each-other. Therefore resulting in a wave pattern.

movies from the last 5 years that I haven't seen
I liked t-34 (2019) when I watched it some years ago. I looked up the people involved with it but it doesn't seem like they have done anything similar since. I know tank movies are like the russian equivalent of capeshit but still, it was refreshing that it portrayed war more from the perspective of a wagner group or azov battalion nihilist rather than the typical solemn volunteer or unwilling recruit. the protagonists are fighting, having fun, killing nazis, and winning, what else could you ask for?

I just looked up all the directors listed here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_eccentric_cinema and all I see between 2019-now is either slop or just nonsense, it's garbage, bullshit content made for streaming platforms. I also looked up chinese directors but unfortunately that's a country where the adults are in charge so even the so called propaganda movies are serious and sad (🙁) and kind of preachy in a patriotic superego way

as you can see I'm a very basic and prejudiced person, recommend movies in that time range that I can enjoy

sample free vaporwave

Something that seems to be gaining more popularity lately is sample free vaporwave, or vaporwave which samples original composition as opposed to pre existing music. Besides the common criticisms against it such as; it goes against the very nature of the genre, or defeats the whole purpose, I think it's particularly interesting from a leftist perspective.
Vaporwave started off being made and shared anonymously online by working class people with no regards for copyright infringement. Essentially, it was a big middle finger to the very idea of intellectual property. Then you get into the genre's critique of capitalism, satire of consumerism, and so forth. Anyway, the genre gradually died out, losing its relevance along the way, and around the same time an enigmatic album called "virtua.zip" was released. Meet George Clanton, now multimillionaire record label owner/petit bourgeois hipster, the progenitor of sample free vaporwave. This album challenged the foundations of vaporwave, but also paved the way for the eventual commodification and subsequent recuperation of the genre, the very thing it was critiquing in the first place.
Since vaporwave had been growing increasingly popular, this also meant it was quickly transforming into a marketable product. Pioneering the forefront of this was George Clanton, who quickly rose from a nobody from Virginia into a small-time superstar. He found success in starting one of the first vaporwave record labels, transforming vaporwave into a "brand", as well as hosting the first ever vaporwave music festival (which insisted it was a "safe space" for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folx despite selling out 100$ tickets to white hipsters anyway) among other things. At the same time the genre saw a shift away from its roots towards original composition and a more "experimental" sound, which in turn increased the rate of its commercialization even faster. Fast forward to today and you have vaporwave labels by the hundreds, endless vaporwave "fashion" (including an actual in-store location in LA), and the transition away from a loosely interconnected movement into a DIY "scene". Not to mention vaporwave aesthetics ironically being appropriated by corporations like Facebook and MTV among other things.
Among these sample free vaporwave artists, the majority come from a petit bourgeois background, having access to thousands of dollars worth of instruments, equipment, and gear. As you might guess, there's an air of elitism among them, believing they're superior for creating "real music" that can be safely copyrighted, packaged, and processed, which clearly shows they know nothing about the genre they've co-opted.
A former shell of itself, the genre has all but lost its rebellious spirit, sanitized and pacified until it became the very thing it attempted to challenge.

Conan The Barbarian movie review

The ur-reactionary film

From time to time you get these right wing movies such as 300 and Conan the Barbarian which I call "reactionary films", i.e. any movie which is based on some hypermasculine white guy beating back the androgyne, ethnic forces of evil. Conan the Barbarian (1982) is the perfect example of this, the ur-reactionary movie

TLDR: Conan the barbarian (1982 movies) is a 1980s right wing movie, part of the Reagan turn/backlash against the 60s/70s. The witch he encounters and has sex with early through the movie is supposed to represent the evils of "free love", she literally turns into a ghost demon as she orgasms. The whole part where the girls father, the king asks Conan to get his daughter back from Thulsa Doom who is (probably) sexing his daughter. The cultists of Thulsa doom are supposed to be an analogue for hippie-commune 1960s people who tell Conan to "go back to the land" and have flower power shit. Next there's there's the gay snake-priest that tries to seduce Conan but Conan beats him up. The Villain of the movie is an ultra masculine deep voice black man (James Earl Jones as "Thulsa Doom") who has hypnotized a cult full of nubile dancing white girls into a sexualized stupor, sort of combining 1970s anti cult shit with anti hippie stuff. At the end the hippies put out their new age candles and shit and leave, and the girls go back to their fathers. All delivered by an ultramasculine white man (Arnie) to defeat and buckbreak black hypermasculinity (James Earl Jones). Essentially its the artistic reaction to undo the 1960s/70s and everything about it including sexuality, race, etc.

Long Version:

I: Introduction

Conan the Barbarian is a 1982 epic sword and sorcery film directed by John Milius and written by him and Oliver Stone. Based on Robert E. Howard‘s Conan, the film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role and James Earl Jones, with Sandahl Bergman, Gerry Lopez, Max von Sydow, Mako, Sven-Ole Thorsen, and Ben Davidson.

The film gave Schwarzenegger worldwide recognition, and in the years since its release, it became a cult film, making a lot more money on home video. It spawned a sequel, Conan the Destroyer, in 1984, and a reboot was made in 2011.

A link to quotes from the film can be found here.

[My main concern in this analysis is the political agenda of this film. I very much like the movie, but that doesn’t mean I, as a leftist, agree with its politics, which I will criticize here. If you happen to love Conan the Barbarian, and you agree with the right-wing ideology that the film espouses–however subtly and allegorically–then this analysis is definitely not for you; therefore I recommend you read no further and find a more politically sympathetic write-up.]

II: Conservative Conan

I am analyzing Conan the Barbarian because it is very much a film of its time. Made in the early 1980s, it reflects, in symbolic and allegorical form, the politics of Reagan and his ilk. The film metaphorically not only glorifies the individualism that was and is part of the ideal of Reagan and other right-wing libertarians (who, incidentally, include Milius and Schwarzenegger), but also the reactionary hypermasculinity that went against feminist gains in the 1970s. There’s even a subtle nod to fascism in its light-brown-haired ‘Aryan’ muscleman hero fighting a black villain (Doom himself may not be black–he’s rather a member of an extinct pre-Atlantic race–but we see a black actor [Jones] playing him, and it’s the film’s social effect on our world that matters, not the fictional world it is literally presenting.), the decapitation of whom disturbed Roger Ebert. In fact, there was a white supremacist streak even in Robert E. Howard himself.

These three elements–right-wing libertarian individualism, hypermasculinity, and Aryan supremacist fascism–are interrelated, since the former two lie on a continuum with the extreme third (as even the social democracy of mainstream liberalism does, something Stalin noted). These three are especially interrelated in Conan the Barbarian, a highly entertaining film acting out the fantasies of mostly alienated pre-adolescent boys back in the early 80s (in spite of the film’s R-rating for violence, sex, and nudity); and it’s the mingling of these three ultraconservative elements that’s what makes the otherwise well-made film so dangerously seductive to such an impressionable young audience.

III: Steel

Let’s start with the notion of the “Riddle of Steel,” and what it can be seen to represent. While the fetish of weaponry (i.e., the steel of a sword) has long existed in literature–the Iliad, Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, etc.–since this film came out during the early Reagan era and reflects the ideology of the time, we must consider what the steel of a sword can be seen to symbolize in the context of the film.

Steel is an alloy of iron with a tiny percentage of carbon to improve its strength. Iron, in turn, is an element forming much of the Earth’s outer and inner core (hence Crom, Conan’s god, is a god of the Earth). The point is that steel is derived from the Earth, fashioned for men’s purposes, as we see during the film’s opening credits. As a metal, like gold, silver, or copper, steel thus can be associated with money, the fetish of capitalists.

Since our concern is with the steel of a sword, we now move from the money-loving, Earth-plundering capitalist to phallic symbolism, thus linking the steel of a sword with hypermasculinity. After all, we don’t just see Conan displaying his muscles and brandishing a sword, but we also see him bed several women.

This hypermasculine association with phallic steel swords is reinforced in his constant killing of his enemies with his sword. This constant going out to far-off lands to kill others links the metal alloy of steel (symbolically associated with gold and coins) with the hypermasculine phallic sword and ultimately with imperialist plunder. Since this is a movie of the early Reagan era, we shouldn’t be surprised to see how these three elements of the “Riddle of Steel” are centred in capitalism.

IV: Flesh is Stronger

Of course, it must be emphasized that what Conan learns over the course of the film is that steel, the literal metal, is not the great source of strength that he, as a boy, came to understand from his father’s teachings. It is rather the steel heart of determination that gives one strength. In fact, Thulsa Doom (Jones), though originally coveting steel and killing Conan’s father and mother to acquire one of those swords, eventually learns that flesh is more powerful than steel, hence Doom’s snake cult.

Now, since Conan represents the heroic ideal of Milius’ libertarian/hypermasculine/cryptofascist myth, the villain of the film must be the ideological opposite. Conan, Valeria (Bergman), and Subotai (Lopez) are on Reagan’s side, so Doom must be symbolic of communist leaders like Stalin and Mao. Doom’s death cult is thus, thanks to the spurious anticommunist propaganda that flooded the Western media during the Cold War, representative of the wildly exaggerated death toll associated with communism.

Having a black man play Doom reinforces these associations for the film’s intended right-wing, white male audience. As I said above, it doesn’t matter that Doom, with his blue eyes and straight, long hair, is not actually a black man in the story: we as an audience see Jones, a black actor wearing blue contact lenses and a wig, on the screen. We make the necessary association, in spite of the actual race of the fictional character. If anything, the blue eyes and no Afro make one think of the experiments of Josef Mengele, who injected blue dye into people’s eyes to make them ‘more acceptable Aryans.’ The film’s fascist ideology is subtle, not obvious. The reason for this subtlety should also be obvious in the liberal world of Hollywood.

Now, if Thulsa Doom’s snake cult in this allegory represents the ideology of communism, and if he is right to have recognized that flesh is more powerful than steel, then his correctness goes against the tendentious political bias that this film is promoting. His affirmation of the superiority of flesh to steel, of the human will’s mastery of the sword, is a kind of Freudian slip that exposes the error of the right-wing ideology championed in Conan the Barbarian. After all, it was the steely determination of the Red Army that defeated the Nazis in WWII, in spite of the metal of the tanks of the Wehrmacht.

V: Freudian Slips

I’ve argued elsewhere that ‘Freudian slips,’ if you will, exist in many films, parapraxes that go against the bias presented in each of the films. The one I mentioned above in Conan the Barbarian isn’t the only one in that film. Others include the fact that our heroes, representing the “free market” capitalist agenda advocated by Milius and Schwarzenegger in the film’s allegory, are thieves by their own admission.

We on the left have always complained that capitalists–who exploit labour by taking, as surplus value, much of the value that workers put into the commodities they produce–are thieves who deny workers the full fruit of their labour, all for the sake of maximizing profit. When right-wing libertarians gripe that “Taxation is theft!”, being especially irked when tax revenue is put into social programs for the poor, they fail to understand how this ‘stolen’ money is really being returned to the poor from whom it was originally stolen by the capitalists.

Another Freudian slip is in how this film is supposed to reflect the right-wing libertarian opposition to ‘big government,’ as symbolized by Doom’s cult (for recall, libertarians tend to regard all socialism as ‘something a government does’); yet our hero, Conan, is understood to become a king at the end of the film. Though the film is set in a world of kings and queens, suggesting either feudal times or the ancient master/slave contradiction, these past class relations are still analogous to the modern contradiction of the bourgeoisie (and the state that protects its interests) and the proletariat; so seeing King Conan on his throne at the end of the film is a metaphor for the ‘government-hating’ libertarian who becomes the head of the government…as Reagan was.

VI: Libertarianism and Fascism

The notion of ‘big vs small government’ was and is a big lie. It isn’t the size of the state that makes it oppressive vs liberating; it’s whom the state serves–the rich, or the people–that makes it the one way or the other. So Conan, the thief who decapitates and disembowels with his sword, then becomes king, is hardly any better than Doom and his snake cult.

Remember that right-wing libertarianism isn’t the same thing as fascism, but the one exists on a continuum with the other. The only difference between the two is in how the material conditions of the world give rise to the one or to the other. Libertarian thinking is usually popular during economic good times (as is mainstream liberalism), when socialism is propagandized against as it was during the Reagan era. But when times are financially hard, as during the Germany of the 1920s, or over the past ten years, fascist and authoritarian systems of government tend to arise and even become relatively popular. As for our current situation, in which fear of disease is prompting measures that are disturbingly approaching totalitarianism, anyone who thinks Republican-friendly Biden is a communist is an idiot…seriously.

The fascist ideology cunningly woven into the film’s narrative includes elements either rightly or wrongly associated with Nazism. These include the opening quote from Nietzsche‘s Twilight of the Idols (‘Maxims and Arrows,’ 8): “What does not kill me makes me stronger,” though at the film’s beginning, it’s rendered, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”

Now, Nietzsche was about as far removed from being a proto-Nazi as anyone could be: just read his books, and note the many times he bashed his own country as a reaction against the disturbing growing trend of German nationalism that he saw all around him. Still, his pro-Nazi sister, Elisabeth Förster-Niezsche, edited his writing to make it seem sympathetic to Nazi ideology, and this association is sufficient for the film’s ideological purposes. After all, the opening quote, reflecting the film’s theme of determination, as well as such notions as The Will to Power, fit well with the themes of The Triumph of the Will. Add to these facts the film’s influence of Wagnerian opera, and we can further see the link, however subtle, with Nazism.

VII: The Barbarian’s Beginnings

Anyway, the story begins with Conan’s father telling him, a boy, to trust neither men, nor women, nor beasts…a perfect recipe for alienation. The boy is to trust steel and steel alone, which as I interpreted above means to trust the resources plundered from the Earth for the benefit of the rich, to trust the metal of coins fetishized by the rich, to trust a phallic symbol that encourages toxic masculinity, and to trust a weapon wielded for the sake of empire.

Later, Conan learns that he, indeed, can trust men (Subotai), women (Valeria), and beasts (the horses and camels he rides). His father was wrong. One of the most important things we learn as we grow up is, to our utter disillusion, how often our parents are wrong about things.

Since Thulsa Doom’s snake cult, in this allegory, represents the Soviet Union as demonized by right-wing propaganda, Doom’s raid on the Cimmerian village can be seen to represent how the Russian Revolution affected the country’s bourgeoisie in the late 1910s and in the 1920s (fittingly, the raid happens on a snowy day, suggesting a Russian winter). Conan’s steel-fetishizing parents can thus be seen to represent the Russian petite bourgeoisie, the confiscation of whose private property is symbolized by Doom’s taking of Conan’s father’s sword. The killing of Conan’s parents is, symbolically, just more anti-Soviet propaganda.

As a result, Conan’s simmering lust for revenge can be compared to the resentment of such Russian bourgeoisie as Ayn Rand, whose parents’ business was confiscated by the Soviets, and who emigrated to the US and got her revenge on the USSR by writing pro-capitalist novels and promoting her egoistic Objectivist philosophy.

VIII: Conan’s Coming-of-Age

Chained to the Wheel of Pain, young Conan grows up a slave. This is how self-pitying capitalists see themselves, not only under the dictatorship of the proletariat (where, thanks to Lenin’s NEP during the 1920s, the kulaks were allowed to make profits, and only when Stalin ended the NEP and collectivized agriculture, which benefitted the poor and ultimately ended famines, did the kulaks lose their profits, then, out of spite, hoarded food and killed livestock, thus exacerbating the bad harvests of the early 30s that were misrepresented as the “Holodomor” hoax by Nazi propagandists), but also under social democratic forms of government, with their high taxes.

As a young man, Conan is given the opportunity to display his talents as a fighter. First we see this Aryan-looking Cimmerian (the casting of Schwarzenegger is more than ideal) fight and defeat a black man with razor-sharp teeth, the bestial savagery of whom reinforces that disturbing feeling we have at the end of the film, when Conan kills Doom. Recall Howard’s words contrasting whites and blacks: “The ancient empires fall, the dark-skinned peoples fade and even the demons of antiquity gasp their last, but over all stands the Aryan barbarian, white-skinned, cold-eyed, dominant, the supreme fighting man of the earth.”

This discovery and glorification of Conan’s abilities as a fighter represents a promotion of the capitalist ideal of competition. It is acceptable if the bourgeois, feudal lord, or ancient slave-master kills, but it’s never defensible if the proletarian vanguard, as represented in Thulsa Doom, kills.

IX: Women

Women in Conan the Barbarian are typically sexualized and treated as objects of men’s pleasure, hence the scene with the terrified, bare-breasted woman put in Conan’s cage so he can enjoy her while other men lecherously watch. It doesn’t matter that we see Conan put a blanket around her, playing the role of the ‘gentleman’: her fear and reluctance clearly demonstrate her non-consent. This is rape.

As for the beautiful witch (played by Cassandra Gava), who has presaged Conan’s coming, and who knows of Doom’s standard, with the snakes facing each other, again, it seems obligatory that she let him have her; note how she erotically crawls before him. And though Valeria is his equal fighting companion, he beds her, too. It is easy to see how all these women exist largely, if not almost exclusively, for male fantasy: this ties in with the hypermasculinity promoted in this right-wing film.

Connected to this is Conan’s ‘correct’ answer to the question, “What is best in life?” His answer, a paraphrasing of a Genghis Khan quote, glorifies conquest, implying a lust for imperialism, and the pleasure of hearing “the lamentation of [the enemy’s] women,” sounds like misogynistic sadism, a fascistic/imperialistic sadism. Small wonder right-wingers love this movie and Conan’s quote, delivered in Schwarzenegger’s German accent.

Why isn’t peace “what is best in life?” Why isn’t a society in which production is to provide for all “what is best in life,” rather than production to benefit a wealthy, privileged few? We wouldn’t expect these Mongol-like warmongers to embrace such pacifist, empathic values, of course, but the point is that the audience is expected to sympathize with the answer of the film’s light-brown-haired, Aryan-like hero.

X: Freedom and Friendships

Conan as a young man is freed, and in his travels is chased by dogs; he stumbles into an underground Atlantean colonist warrior’s tomb, where he finds an ancient sword. This going underground, then coming back up to the surface, is a symbolic death and resurrection, a theme to be repeated several times later in the film. His retrieval of the sword will make him feel as though he’s closer to discovering the Riddle of Steel, and his new, phallic weapon will make him feel like a rejuvenated man. What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.

He soon meets Subotai (based on a Mongol), a Hyrkanian, meaning someone from the Eurasian Steppe. This means he is someone who ethnically could be anyone from Eastern Europe to Xinjiang, Mongolia, and/or Manchuria. He’s made to look Asian, though the actor, Lopez, is a Hawaiian of Mexican descent. Just as Jones was made to look ‘less black,’ so is Subotai ‘not so Asian.’ His voice, incidentally, was overdubbed by the Japanese-American actor, Sab Shimono.

Conan and Subotai discuss their gods while eating. Subotai prays to the Four Winds, whom he considers superior to Conan’s Crom; naturally, our hero considers his Earth-god better than Subotai’s wind-god. Once again, we see a promotion of the spirit of competition, the urge to be superior, or at least associated with superiority, in our heroes’ banter.

XI: Thieves

They meet Valeria in the city of Zamora, and all three raid the Tower of the Serpent, stealing jewels and killing a giant snake there. Among the snake art we see there, usually two snakes facing each other, we also see an ouroboros, my symbol of the dialectic, which is fitting for how Doom’s snake cult is meant to represent the philosophy of Marxism-Leninism.

King Osric (von Sydow), impressed with these three thieves’ daring, and detesting Doom’s cult, pays them with all the jewels they can carry to rescue his daughter, who has been seduced by Doom’s ideas. The king’s love for his daughter is so great that he can easily give up so many jewels…but the eyes of the trio of thieves light up at the sight of so much wealth.

Conan, still with revenge on his mind, goes out alone to face Doom, since Valeria feels content just to take Osric’s jewels. Conan meets the Wizard of the Mounds (Mako), who also narrates the story. It’s curious how he, the film’s narrator, refers to Conan as his “lord” and “master.” Since this wizard is Asian, his subservient attitude to Aryan Conan reinforces the white supremacist undercurrent in this right-wing film. (Recall how, at the beginning, the narrator refers to the “sons of Aryus.”)

XII: Doom’s Cult of Personality

Conan reaches Doom’s Temple of Set, or Mountain of Power. Set, in the Marvel Universe of demons used in the Conan comics, is the “God of the Dead.” Thulsa Doom is based on two of Howard’s characters: the villain in Kull of Atlantis, yet based even more so on Thoth-Amon, a Stygian sorcerer in “The Phoenix on the Sword.” (One might also associate Set with the ancient Egyptian deity of violence, disorder, and foreigners, among other things, who was at times vilified for having killed Osiris, but who was also seen by some as a heroic deity.) Many see Doom as being like Jim Jones, the “apostolic socialist” cult leader whose control over his people was so complete as to make hundreds of them willing to kill themselves, as we see Doom have one of his female followers drop to her death.

Since Doom, in terms of the film’s Reaganite allegory, represents the ideological foe of the political right, this seductive death-cult leader is meant to represent the “cult of personality” seen in communist leaders like Stalin, Mao, and the Kims…at least as they’re portrayed in right-wing propaganda. What is little known, however, is that left-wing leaders like Stalin and Mao rejected the kind of idolatrous status that men like Hitler and Mussolini were all too happy to receive. Far from being the dictator he was believed to be, Stalin actually tried unsuccessfully to resign as General Secretary of the Soviet Union no less than four times; he had only one vote in determining Soviet policy, and often lost in these votes; and the notion of a “cult of personality” surrounding Stalin was actually a Khrushchev lie.

XIII: Doom’s Followers

When we see Conan among Doom’s many followers by the temple, it’s curious to note how, in their dress and their hair, they resemble hippies. This, I believe, is significant because far right-wing types tend, idiotically, to equate hippies with communists, when the former are so obviously liberal.

Conan approaches one of the priests, and it’s implied that this priest is homosexual and interested in our muscleman hero, who beats him unconscious and steals his priestly robes to disguise himself in. One shouldn’t be surprised to see our beloved hero act in this way: recall the German gay men forced to wear pink triangles on their Nazi concentration camp uniforms.

The dark robes of some members of Doom’s snake cult, including those worn by, for example, Rexor (Davidson), have a design in its contrasts of white and dark that, to my eye, vaguely suggest the clothing of rabbis, particularly those of ancient times. One normally expects snake designs to be round and swirling; but these snake designs are angular, square-like, and being dark against a white background, they vaguely remind me of Hebrew letters. I’m not saying any of this was consciously intended; I bring this up to suggest another fascist association often made with communism: the notion of Jewish Bolshevism. This Nazi association is made even though very few high-ranking members of the Bolshevik Party were Jews.

XIV: Christian Symbolism

Conan is apprehended by Rexor and Thorgrim (Thorsen), a spike on the latter’s boot is stabbed into Conan’s hand, and Doom gives the command, “Crucify him,” reminding us of what “the Jews” told Pilate to do with Christ (John 19:14-16).

And so, Conan is crucified on the Tree of Woe. While the religious world of this film is thoroughly pagan, of course, any rejection of Christian symbolism in this scene is absurd. After all, much of the make-up of Christianity is pagan mystery tradition, as Hyam Maccoby pointed out in his book, The Mythmaker: Paul and the Invention of Christianity. Many Christians try to deny the pagan influence on their religion, but even CS Lewis expressed the belief, in his book Mere Christianity, that his Christian God put the foretelling of Jesus on the Cross into the dreams of the people of all the heathen religions (page 37 of this pdf). These pagans, in Lewis’s opinion, misunderstood the message, and distorted it with myths of dying and resurrecting gods, or like Odin when nailed to Yggdrasil, whom Conan resembles on the Tree of Woe.

The accommodation of Christian symbolism into Conan the Barbarian also dovetails with the film’s right-wing message, since fascism and other forms of conservative politics have always found Christianity to be a useful tool for reactionary purposes. Make the toiling masses believe they will be rewarded in heaven, and they’ll work harder without complaint. Even libertarian-centrist Frank Zappa was worried about the direction that right-wing libertarian/Christian Reagan was moving America in; he warned of a future “fascist theocracy.” One can debate whether or not Zappa’s fears have been realized in the US, but the links between right-wing libertarianism, fascism, and Christian traditionalism are undeniable; all three of these can be seen, in a veiled symbolic/allegorical form, in Conan the Barbarian.

Francoist Spain was a combination of Falange fascism, monarchism, and Catholicism; in 1959, their government adopted “free market” economic policies. Pinochet’s right-wing authoritarian government in Chile also had “free market” policies courtesy of the Chicago Boys. While Nazi Germany made use of much of Teutonic pagan myth, Hitler et al also accommodated Christian ideas; Catholic Hitler and Nazi ideology tried to promote an ‘Aryan Christ,’ one not too far removed from light-brown-haired Aryan Schwarzenegger on the Tree of Woe.

My associating of Doom’s cult symbolically with “Jewish Bolsheviks” dovetails with this Christian interpretation of Conan’s crucifixion, since Nazi antisemitism has its roots in a two-millennia-old Christian antisemitism. Recall how Hitler used to enjoy reading Luther‘s antisemitic rants. Recall also how 1 Thessalonians 2:14-16 blames the Jews for Christ’s crucifixion.

The relating of Conan the Barbarian with Christian ideas doesn’t end with our hero’s crucifixion. Valeria, Subotai, and the wizard rescue him, take him down from the tree, and treat his wounds in a manner reminiscent of the speculations of Hugh J Schonfield‘s Passover Plot. Unconscious Conan is beset by demons in the night, while Valeria fights them off (she’ll pay with her own life later); this scene symbolically suggests Jesus’ harrowing of Hell.

The next day, we see a rejuvenated Conan (“What doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger.”), suggesting the symbolism of a resurrected Christ. Now, Conan and his companions plan how they’ll infiltrate the Temple of Set and rescue Osric’s daughter.

XV: Orgiastic Music

Wearing stripes of black and white camouflage, our three thieves enter the mountain from the back. We hear choral music subtly reminding one of Orff‘s Carmina Burana (i.e., ‘O Fortuna’), but also suggesting Wagnerian opera, as Milius had always fancied his film to be. Images of large pots with the body parts of victims of cannibalism symbolically reinforce the anti-Soviet propaganda.

Added to this propaganda is the following scene, with our three heroes entering a large room with Doom and Osric’s daughter, and a bevy of beautiful women lying about orgiastically in the centre. Subotai remarks on the sight, calling it “paradise.” Right-wing ideologues assume that Stalin, Mao, the Kims, et al lived in the lap of luxury, when high-ranking members of communist parties lived only marginally better than their respective common populations. To see the obscene luxury of the capitalist über-wealthy, look no further than Bezos, Musk, Gates et al…and some of their ilk have been involved in their own orgiastic scenes.

Since I’ve been so critical of this film, I’ll take a brief moment to praise the waltz-like music in this scene. Film-score composer Basil Poledouris‘ “Orgy” is a delight to listen to, with memorable melodies undulating throughout. It always stands out in my mind as one of the film’s highlights.

XVI: The Serpent

In this scene, we see Doom transform into a giant serpent. That his is a snake cult ties in well with the film’s Christian symbolism, for if Conan is our Christ-like hero, getting stronger after not dying from his crucifixion, then Doom as our villain is, fittingly, the Satanic serpent of the Garden of Eden, tempting such Eve-like women as Osric’s daughter and the half-naked women in the orgy.

The serpent, like the sword, is a phallic symbol in its own right, but one made of the stronger material of the flesh, not of steel. Phallic, serpentine Doom is leading women like Osric’s daughter astray, exploiting them, as the film would have us believe of leftist leaders; yet, was Conan any better with the bare-breasted woman in the cage?

Pre-Castro Cuba was teeming with prostitution when that right-wing butcher Batista was a puppet for American politicians and mafia. One of the first things communists do after a revolution is to work aggressively to rid their countries of prostitution, striving to provide women with the education, equal opportunities, and material conditions needed so they can avoid having to sell themselves to survive. Presenting Doom in an orgy symbolically portrays socialists as whoremongers; this pro-capitalist film is projecting right-wing guilt onto the left.

The thieves take the princess out and ride away. Doom, changed back into human form, makes a small snake into an arrow and fires it at Valeria, killing her. The superiority of phallic flesh over phallic steel is demonstrated again, for his command, “Seek,” is enough to ensure a hit. Valeria had paid the gods for interfering with the demons’ attack on unconscious Conan.

XVII: Valeria and the Princess

Conan burns her body with Subotai’s torch at her funeral. Subotai weeps for him, for as he observes, Cimmerians never weep. As the film’s masculine ideal, Conan reinforces the hypermasculine notion that ‘boys don’t cry.’ Subotai’s weeping for him suggests Asian servility to white supremacy, like the wizard’s servility.

We’re meant to believe that the princess’s continued allegiance to Doom is some kind of brainwashing, as right-wingers assume leftists to have, rather than a projection of right-wing brainwashing that ‘capitalism is freedom.’ So Doom’s shooting of a snake arrow at her is more symbolic anti-Soviet propaganda. The Battle of the Mounds, a desert-like region, reminds me of the then-already-underway Soviet-Afghan War that had been manipulated into being by Carter and Brzezinski: Conan and Subotai, luring Doom, Thorgrim, and Rexor to the mounds for a final battle, are thus like the mujahideen, well-paid and armed by the US (as Osric has paid the three thieves with an abundance of jewels), and bleeding Soviet power dry, as Conan does of Doom’s power, by killing Thorgrim and Rexor.

XVIII: Symbolic Castration, and Transcending a Father’s Wisdom

Indeed, the killing of Rexor is symbolic castration (with the help of Valeria as a glowing, Valkyrie-like spirit), with Conan’s breaking of his sword and realizing that the Riddle of Steel isn’t about steel per se, but about having the steely manhood to wield the sword with determination to win. In this way, Conan has outlearned his father, for part of becoming a man is going beyond the limitations of your father’s wisdom. Such an upstaging of your father is a symbolic castration of him (like Cronus‘ rising up against Uranus), and symbolic castration occurs in many forms in Conan the Barbarian.

Since I’ve equated serpents with the phallus, we can see Conan’s decapitation of the giant snake in his raid of the Tower of Serpents as a symbolic castration, too. And since Doom himself can be a giant serpent, his decapitation at the end of the film is also a symbolic castration. It’s interesting in this connection to note how Doom, immediately before Conan kills him, tries to hypnotize him and manipulate him by calling him his “son.” In Conan’s rise to manhood, he’ll have no one as his father, not even a father-figure in Crom, who, in Conan’s prayer to Him, says He can go to Hell if He won’t help him and Subotai defeat Doom.

In Conan’s prayer/curse to Crom, we see how the right-winger can take God or leave Him, depending on the circumstances. We’ve seen how Nazis can pose as Christians or as quasi-pagans. Similarly, such “new atheists” as Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris have embraced neoconservatism as an imperialist reaction against Islam.

XIX: King Conan

The film ends with a shot of an older Conan sitting on a throne with an expression that suggests Henry IV‘s dictum, “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.” This image is reiterated at the end of Conan the Destroyer, with the narrative voiceover of Akiro the Wizard saying, “…he found his own kingdom and wore his crown upon a troubled brow.”

So Conan in the end will himself be a king, a ruler, the governor, as it were, of a people. Since this story, set in an ancient and fantastic world, is meant as an allegory of our times, his becoming a king represents how the libertarian ideal will eventually be the very government that people like Milius and Schwarzenegger so dislike (recall in this connection how Schwarzenegger would eventually be the Governor of California).

Similarly, the Koch brothers, of right-wing libertarian disposition, got heavily involved in influencing the government, as do Rand Paul and Ron Paul. The two Pauls, to be fair, are anti-war and opposed to the kind of rampant corruption we see in American politics today; but neither of them is willing to overturn the capitalist system that is, through the profit motive, the basis of all this corruption and all these wars. Perhaps that is the reason for King Conan’s “troubled brow,” his “uneasy…head.”

XX: Conclusion

Reagan ran on the idea that “government is the problem,” then he became the leader of that very government. His tax cuts to the rich, and those of similarly-minded politicians, allowed millionaires eventually to become billionaires, whose money has since been used to buy politicians to ensure that the state serves the rich rather than the people. The greater accumulation of capital, concentrating and centralizing it in the hands of the richest people, has required a larger government, not a smaller one, to protect all the resulting proliferation of private property. Libertarianism leads not to small government, but big, privatized government, hence Reagan’s inflated military budget. Conan, fighter of the powerful, will become one of them.

The right-wing message of Conan the Barbarian is subtle and muted–fittingly so, given the subtle and muted expression of the neoliberal agenda started by Reagan and Thatcher in the early 80s, when this film came out. Some on the left warned of the dangers of this resurgence of conservative ideas, but the warnings fell mostly on deaf ears, just as many would have considered this film to be harmless fun.

It seemed reasonable to most people of the time, myself included, to think of the collectivism of Doom’s followers to be representative of a supposedly similar Soviet collectivism, mindlessly obeying their leader and lacking in Conan’s virtuous individualism. But just as we don’t see what becomes of Doom’s followers after his head is thrown down the steps, neither did most people see how huge percentages of Russians and other Eastern Europeans didn’t want to see the security of the Soviet system give way to predatory capitalism.

Stalin rightly predicted that a dissolving of socialism would result in the most virulent reaction, grabbing the working class by the throat. In today’s post-Soviet world of extreme wealth inequality, the control of most of the American media by six corporations, epidemic homelessness, ecocide, and imperialist war threatening a nuclear WWIII, we see what Doom really is.

In the allegorical sense, Conan really was a barbarian…and a destroyer.

The gem empire could solo nearly every sci di setting

The gem empire in Steven universe is a universe-spanning alien empire. The fuckers literally rip apart entire planets to fuel their expansion. They don’t take just the biologically-compatible resources, they take everything and they’ve colonized nearly every region of their universe. Their own home world is located in a fully colonized galaxy away from the Milky Way. They can fucking teleport anywhere.

The imperium wouldn’t stand a chance even at its prime and neither would the necron empire. The forerunners would be walking with their tails crossed between their legs if the gems went to war with them. Not even the fucking reapers of mass effect stand a chance. The gem empire of Steven universe could and legitimately would solo all galactic empires in every video game franchise and its elites probably wouldn’t even notice that they were even at war with them.

How do gay-mers even cope with this objective fact?

How to Hack Socializing

So I had a massive social fail yesterday. I don't really want to get to the details because nobody here cares about my drama. I want to get to a feeling that probably unites some of us.
A lot of us are very into computers in a way nobody except us can understand, and along with that or because of that, we lost our social lives.
Me, I have very bad people skills. Unlike others, it isn't that I'm too scared to talk to others, in fact that sensation is extremely dull, only flares up talking to cute girls, like anyone else. So I don't have a block when it comes to just talking to people.
What I struggle with is the technical skills: how to read people effectively and respond to their emotions, keeping a conversation flowing and expanding, speaking technique (my speech has degraded somewhat to the point where I stutter, my voice sometimes cracks, and I never speak loud enough so should work on that), and moreover the holy grail is utilising social procedure to make a relationship ascend from acquaintanceship to a close friendship.

After yesterday I was wishing I was just normal, that I didn't trade my social life for elite computer skills because of how isolated it made me. I have a unique perspective on the world in so many ways, but I'm also alone in that, and sometimes it doesn't feel worth it. Relating with people over the wire isn't enough anymore, I want to relate with others face-to-face. But I don't want to become a defeated misanthrope just yet. I need to know if it's possible to have it both ways.
Surely other lains have been in similar situation, and maybe have tried and possibly succeeded in fixing it. I haven't searched elsewhere yet because I expect to find mostly snake oil peddled by normal people who don't understand my situation at all. What about you lain? Have you found books which gave you a glimpse at the mechanics of social interactions? how friendship is formed?

Also, is having social media a boon for making friends? At this point I'm considering downloading Instagram to appear more like I am a socially fitting person; I feel like being known as that guy who has no social media, though it makes me novel, probably works against me because it flags my outsider-ness to others, or makes me seem like I'm not approachable. But I want to be approachable. I don't expect to become a sociopath-tier socialite who can smooth talk anybody. I just want to be able to get on with people.

Let's all learn how hack the social fabric of the world to make friends!

Hormone Hacking/ Body mod

I've realized as I've grown older my good youthful looks are fading. Yet, I've noticed many of those who undergo MTF hormone therapy get to regain, or retain many features I like. I guess this has caused me to wonder would it be controversial for me to simply want hormone replacement, not for any gender-affirming reason, but simply for aesthetics, then which led to me realize, so many people in our society have altered themselves, celebrities with plastic surgery and hair transplants, people taking finestaride, steroids. Just kind of makes sense to me I want to screw with my body because I've always had a hacker mindset

Living A Cyberpunk Lifestyle Today?

How can I live in a cyberpunk lifestyle today? I mean, we still don't have body implanted tech and flying cars (lol), but I'm sure we can still manage to live like this as close as possible with the available technology today.

Besides the skills and clothing required for this lifestyle, what would you include in this package?

I would include: reducing the amount of data that the organizations and the government has on you, deleting accounts that has any kind of personal info about you; having a good VPN service would be good too, but I'm not sure about it, maybe a private VPN; customizing your phone to keep it simple and yet useful; hoarding a lot of data (just in case).

Also, I was thinking about some form of minimalism, but I'm not entirely sure how it'd be.

I've been told that the sysadmin job is the best one to be closer to the cyberpunk world, but so is being a NEET. You could get brouzouf from doing some freelance jobs on the internet, just enough to pay your bills and keep yourself fed. Owning a cheap small apartament on the center of the city would help too.

And that's everything I've came up so far. Everything related is welcome.

Guide to adulthood?

I have decided to try to research more about living independently despite being very dependent on my mother still in life.

For background, I am in the middle of my first year at college, and although I've grown to have a good distance from my relatives I still need them for some things. I would like to create a bigger gap between us, but I have no idea for what I need to research.

Since I live in the US, I have whored out the common government aid programs available (state insurance). Could any give advice for someone progressing to an independent lifestyle? Are there any government aid programs I should look into as a low income college student?

I also know I need a driver's license still, but the town I go to college in has a good public transportation infrastructure, so it's not the top of my priority right now.

I mainly spend money on food, but I am looking to gain / save more for some sudden medical bills that are coming up in the next few months.

PRESTIGE TV

Streaming service original, "PRESTIGE" TV is ruining TV. Its a middle ground between lower budget network tv shows that used to churn out 15-40 episodes and actual movies. Instead you have series that go for 6-10 episodes, release them all at once to "binge" and then wait 2+ years for another season, thats if it doesn't fall flat on its face and get cancelled after one season after failing to make enough to cover their 150 million dollar budget to make a show that is only slightly visually better than an early 2000s CW show. Most of these 6 episode shows should have had around half the material cut and simply made into a 2.5 hour long mid range movie.

Gun-kata : The Pinnacle of Combat

THE DECISIVENESS OF GUNS
__POWER__
A single strike from a modest 9mm handgun creates over thirty-seven times the pressure-per-square inch than the world's hardest hitting boxer's fist. This immense force means that each bullet delivers a devastating impact far beyond what any human strike could achieve.
__SPEED__
A single fully automatic handgun can strike four to six times faster per second than the world's fastest boxer can throw punches. This disparity in speed and power means that any untrained firearm user unleashes a barrage of bullets that no human can match in terms of frequency and consistency.

The gun stands alone as an unparalleled force. On average, the gun is one hundred and eighty-five times more decisive than the world’s most skilled unarmed fighter. No other melee or ranged weapon can rival the gun’s decisiveness, regardless of the wielder’s expertise. The gun’s supremacy in combat is a testament to its unmatched decisiveness and devastating force.

INTRODUCING GUN-KATA
The martial art of Gun-Kata takes humankind's most decisive weapon and perfects its application. With mastery of Gun-Kata, the gun—no longer mere weapon—becomes an extension of the master's body. The essence of Gun-Kata lies in its ability to maximize the effectiveness of firearms through the application of martial arts principles. By combining the decisiveness of modern weaponry with the discipline and technique of traditional combat arts, Gun-Kata creates a new paradigm of combat.
__SKILLFUL DUAL-WIELDING__
Consider the geometry of combat. A conventional shooter, with a single firearm, is limited to a narrow cone of fire. Their focus is linear, their action constrained by the very action of aiming and shooting. But a Gun-Kata master, dual-wielding, operates within a dynamic sphere of influence. Their arms move independently yet in harmony, creating overlapping fields of fire that cover a 360-degree radius. Each gun represents a vector of force and direction. When combined, these vectors create a resultant force that is greater than the sum of its parts. The angles they cover are not just doubled; they are multiplied exponentially. The Gun-Kata master, through training and instinct, calculates these vectors in real-time, adjusting their stance, grip, and aim to maximize their lethal potential.
NON-LINEAR DYNAMIC COUNTER-PREDICTIVE MOVEMENT
While a conventional shooter relies on predicting the target’s movements to aim and fire, the Gun-Kata master flips this on its head. The gunkata master has honed their ability to introduce these small, unpredictable changes into their movements. They shift their weight, alter their stance, and pivot with such precision that their trajectory becomes a series of unpredictable variables. The Gun-Kata master operates in a realm where linear predictions fail. Utilizing non-linear dynamics, their movements are fluid, adaptive, and seemingly random, making it impossible for a conventional shooter to lock onto them. They exploit the milliseconds of hesitation and recalibration that their unpredictable movements force upon their opponent. In close-quarters combat, this technique becomes even more pronounced. The Gun-Kata master moves with a speed and agility that defies conventional tactics. They weave through danger like a specter, their body a blur of motion that the untrained eye struggles to follow. Each dodge, each sidestep, is a calculated maneuver designed to exploit the shooter’s momentary lapses in accuracy.

WW3 Scenarios.

So, might as well put this fanfiction I made on how could ww3 go:
>Ukraine launches an offensive into the popular republics and Crimea, they advance a little. Ukraine declares war on Russia.
>The Donbass and Luhansk republics welcome the Russian army.
>The Ukrainian army advances into Crimea, but gets stopped. They conquer some, but get boggled down.
>Russia's military is organizing itself hard on this, and mobilizing itself.
>A month happens with people getting killed but no advances aside from light ukrainian advances.
>The west won't participate yet, but will help Ukraine through military support and it will tell through incredible mental gymnastics that Russia attacked first.
>People are not supportive of the war going on, but they won't care because they see it as just a regional war, no one cares.
>There will be some outrage at the west supporting Ukraine but it won't escalate.
>Then Turkey and Azerbaijan, using some shit excuse, attack Armenia to conquer it.
>Russia intervenes and starts invading Azerbaijan.
>Syria and Iran, maybe even Iraq, start attacking Turkey and Azerbaijan, since Turkey occupies parts of Iraq and Syria right now and Iran is fucking tired of it's bullshit.
>Erdogan says: Assad must go!
>Pakistan is big on being a turkey fanboy, and invades Iran.
>India then goes and invades Pakistan because Kashmir and so on.
>Pakistan starts getting beaten by both India and Iran, no nukes used yet, until Pakistan gets between the sword and the wall. Then it launches it's nukes to both Iran and India, although mostly to India. Maybe a nuke makes it to Russia.
>India in response drops all of it's nukes on Pakistan
>IT_ALL,_RETURNS,_TO_NOTHING.mp3
>Iran is mostly unaffected by this. I mean, its capital has been nuked, but hey, AT LEAST IT'S NOT INDIA.
>India and Pakistan are the first to completely collapse, with warlords coming out of the woods like flies, kinda like post-heydrich germany on TNO.
<"India and pakistan are the first to completely collapse" oh boy just you wait it's gonna be epicly based and posadist-pilled.
>People are fucking horrified as they wake up from the "end of history" dream as the first nuclear apocalypse just happened right now.
>Big ass riots in order to make the war stop right now.
>People get ignored and the media starts making excuses.
>Azerbaijan collapses from both southern and northern pressure as the russian and iranian military enter it's capital. A ton of warcrimes will then be discovered, and this event will be known as the second armenian genocide.
>The turkish front gets bogged down, the advances the turkish made get retaken, but the other armies can't advance as well, getting into a stalemate at the mountains of Anatolia. People die daily on that front but not that much movement is made aside from Turkey attacking again and again and the KPG getting big money from Russia and Iran.
>Turkey, also, after the indian fiasco, starts getting anti-war riots. These riots will be put down by a newly installed nationalist military goverment with Endorgan as it's president. Thousands of people will be incarcerated or killed.
>Turkey starts funding yihadists groups inside of Russia. These groups, aside from making some big incidents inside russia, will spill into other countries such as MENA countries or european ones.
>Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, knowing Iran had been nuked, gets it's opportunity, and tries to invade Iran.
>Of course, Saudi Arabia fucking embarrases itself and collapses as iranian missiles fuck up it's water and petroleum trade.
<And another one bites the dust.
>Aside from this movement from Saudi Arabia, at Ukraine, Russia organizes a counter-attack. Operation Uranus 2.0 La Verganza. From north the russian army advances and cuts off the ukrainian front at donetsk and luhansk. They conquer pretty much everything east of the Dnieper.
>Tons of ukrainian warcrimes are discovered.
>Aside from that, the Ukrainian army at Crimea safely retreats, but Crimea is on shambles. Sevastopol is now a ghost town.
>The russian army still goes on and cross the Dnieper, and in 3 months or so they're at Kiev.
>This scares the shit off NATO, Ukraine gets into NATO at the last moment, and the whole of NATO declares war on Russia.
>China then invades Taiwan to help it's ally Russia. China enters the world war.
>The NATO army is an unorganized mess. The European front has lots of nationalities put into one big army, Spaniards with Greeks, Germans with Italians, France it's not in NATO so it shouldn't intervene, but it's from the EU so it will intervene. The only people who understand each other are americans and bri'ish people.
>Aside from that, they need to get organized in a moment.
>Bielorrusia joins the battle at the side of Russia (or might not, I don't know).
>Polish troops and baltic troops are the first to arrive.
>Eastern European militaries are plagued by corruption, it's army is pretty much useless aside from european support.
>The front gets into almost WW1 borders, Russia conquers till they reach the border with Germany, The Check Republic, Slovakia and Romania.

>Meanwhile, on the asian front, Japan suddenly starts a conscription service and declares war on China. This is hugely unpopular among the japanese people, and riots start to stop such a law to come to be. Japan then gets it's own military goverment a la Pinochet, and becomes and even bigger client state for the US. This conscription law will separate the country in two.

>Not that it matters, as North Korea conquers South Korea and nukes Japan for thy Lulz.
>This makes the separation inside Japan really fucking big between the anti-war movement and the war movement. The anti-war movement will be financed by China, and it's more radical part will take the leadership, although the Chinese will fund the most moderate part that is still anti-war, meanwhile, the pro-war goverment inside Japan will become a lot more repressive. An unspeaken civil war occurs inside Japan
>The US, alongside Japanese recruits, try to conquer Korea. They get bogged down not by korean troops but by the People's Liberation Army, also known as the chinese army.
<Japan might have a communist revolution.

>Meanwhile, let's talk about the toll that this war has made.

>Firstly, about India and Pakistan.
<India and Pakistan become into warlord territory, and millions upon millions of refugees start getting out of the irradiated mess that is the Indian peninsula.
<The "-stan" countries, like Turkmenistan and so on, COLLAPSE HARD, their goverments can't handle the refugee crisis, and other goverments inside their borders start taking power. The Taliban take hold of all of the region and start their caliphate and reign of terror on their jihad. They won't conquer more than those territories, as they have a lot of other problems to tackle.
<The only country to survive this apocalypse is kazhakstan, as it's choke full of chinese and russian military to stop jihadism.

>Meanwhile, at the south-eastern countries of Asia.

<A similar story, the indian refugees come into those countries and are so much people that their goverments collapse as there is not enough food. Anarchy takes hold of the region, with warlords coming out of the woods like flies.
<The US make it's operational base in Asia the Philippines, Australia, and Japan. Most of the war with China is fought on sea, so there's nothing really important happening there. Aside from that, they try to land on Vietnam to try to make it governable again and conquer China with them, this doesn't go as planned, South China is mountainous, so the fight boggles down.

>Meanwhile, at the world.

<The indian nuclear apocalypse has made a layer of dust through the world, making it get less sunlight.
<At the same time, war is literally the most contaminant activity we humans have deviced, the US army makes more CO2 than 192 countries combined.
<Climate change really kicks in, and the poles don't exist anymore, Cuba is now 3 islands, Florida doesn't exist anymore, the Netherlands is underwater, all of the pacific islands have ceased to exist. Crimea, the land they were fighting for, now literally doesn't exist, but the war, ironically, goes on.
<The layer of dust made by the Indian Nuclear Apocalypse (INA) has made it so crops don't grow because of not having the sufficient light to actually grow, as it has happened times before when a massive volcano literally exploded.
<OH BOY HERE'S THE GOOD PART, THE GOOD SHIT.
<ALL THE COUNTRIES OF THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE OR AT THE EQUATOR COLLAPSE UNTO FAMINES
<IT ALL RETURNS TO NOTHING
<THE ONLY COUNTRIES WHICH WILL HOPE TO SAVE ITSELFSARE THE ONES THAT HAVE STORED FOOD FOR THIS HAPPENING AND HAVE THE POLITICAL POWER TO RATION IT
<HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA
<Also this will make a refugee crisis so hard not till now seen, more extreme than the barbarian migrations during the end of the Roman Empire, shit's about to go down.

>Meanwhile, at the American continent.

<The US probably has made some plans to conquer Venezuela and Cuba
<They enact them.
<People are pissed about it.
<Guerrilla Warfare against US occupation.

>Meanwhile, at Europe.

<Most of the countries in Europe don't fucking want to be at war with Russia aside from the Eastern ones, the most anti-war countries would be Spain and Greece IMO.
<On the case of Spain, as a Spaniard myself, this anti-war movement would be fucking gigantous. We already had an anti-war movement during the Irak war in which we participated in, and our army, compared to the rest of the european armies, although well equipped, is it because of it's adherence to NATO. During late Francoism the spanish military made drills with ww2 junkers and using gasoline caskets with grenades attached to them as bombs. The military in Spain is the most corrupt organization in this country, and getting it purged against Russia would be incredibly funny if it wasn't because they would implement a draft (as in the majority of Europe tbh) to combat Russia. That, alongside the anger against the politicians, the capitalists and the king itself, which is also the commander of troops, kinda like Nicholas the second… I don't have to tell anything more tbh. Spain, being also an enter way into Europe would have problems with refugees and an incredible instability on itself, aside that the country is run by actual monkeys, there would probably be no rationing at all, making the food prices skyrocket till infinity. Everything of that would mix on a revolutionary cocktel from which a communist revolution could arise. A liberal revolution might happen first, with a republic, and then another one, kinda like the russian revolution. Hell, even Felipe VII looks kinda like King Nicholas from Russia.
<Spain might have a communist revolution which would then spread through Europe, maybe Portugal and Greece would have it's own revolutions, and would get out of the war. France is another one which might have a revolution, Italy I don't know, Britain could have one since Britain is already going to shit the bed, even without the whole WW3 happening.
>The US will conquer part of Andalucia through Gibraltar to ensure that it bases there remain loyal.
<On other countries, I don't know how it would go like, please answer this post with your conclusions.
<Either way, the war would boggle down hard, and we would get into a WW1 era of trenches, only now with drones.
<The EU will have to make a separate peace treaty with Russia, which will stand "victorious" (saying much tbh) at the war. The EU will be dismantled and Russia will make client states at Poland and the Baltic states, taking everything else for themselves. The EU is in shambles, but at least it hasn't been nuked to death. The peace treaty was to try to avoid a communist revolution, it will happen either way, or there might be a civil war inside of the EU between communists and the other groups, comprised of "liberals" and literal nazies, from this war, the most likely winner would be the communists, since technically they would have come from the south which had it's factories kinda untouched because of being so far away from Russia.
<Either way, the EU doesn't exist anymore, it's a shell of it's former self, and there's people starving to death on the streets meanwhile a civil war turns really sour.

>The US-Chinese front.

<The last front, this front has done nothing at all, and with Russia out of the european front, and coming to help the chinese, the US will resort to the last tactic possible.
<Red Telephone Incident (RTI) of 05/12/2024
<Russia, China and the US enter a mad max radiation periode, alongside japan, Australia and the Philippines.

>The aftermath.

<The only places that continues to kinda exist is some countries of South America and communist Europe, but they will enter a long, looooooooooong dark age of maybe two centuries or so.

Fallout TV Show

so i finished watching the entire series and something made me feel uneasy. starting with episode 6 and going into episode 7 the show takes a very political turn. a turn against capitalism and an actual, intended or not, positive portray of communism. almost directly actually. at least, it takes the blame completely away from communism, portray some of the communist in the show as actually good people fighting against the evils of capitalism. at least those to be heavily hinted at as being communist. which made me very delighted but then it dawned to me, this is a amazon prime production based off a video game from bethesda who is now owned by microsoft. three massive, very capitalist, corporations that have shown time again to be very for profit.

but even if we remove the debate whether or not communist being portrayed as good did happen in the show, the show itself was extremely critical of capitalism and that makes me wonder why these billion dollar corporations that are the epitome of why capitalism is bad, be telling its viewers, the very nature of amazon, bethesda, and microsft, everything they stand for, the people who made the show and games, are bad? why would they want their consumers to hate the very thing that allows these elites, these companies, to exist in the first place?

is it some sort of chess move i don't understand? have we reached a state where capitalism could very well nuke the planet and people won't care so these companies don't care if criticism about them is made? or more wishful thinking, they think this will spare them from the revolution? i don't understand their move here. i don't expect capitalist companies to allow people to hate them.

Self Improvement

Hello comrades. ITT we talk about what we are doing to improve ourselves. I'll go first:

I am trying to quit smoking. This is probably my sixth attempt but I am going to try and take it more seriously this time.

I have been cutting down for the past few months and had gotten down to 3 cigarettes a day but when I tried to quit earlier this week I ended up buying a pack at the end of the first day and smoking the whole thing that night out of anxiety about quitting.

I am a drug addict in recovery and this leaves coffee and kratom as the two substances I can use. The kratom seems to help with cigarette cravings or at least incentivizes smoking because I feel sick when I smoke on it. I might try NRT too. I am going to try and get back into running too since that helped me get off heroin the first time.

Cinematic Universes

Why have movies and other franchises moved away from just doing normal sequels to doing prequels and side stories so much?
I don't buy that it's simply for the sake of fan buy-in and "I know what that is!" You can put references to other stories into a new one without making them literally connected. So what gives?

It's especially weird with Mad Max, where the continuity in the older movies was always vague. The way Road Warrior and Thunderdome made it seem like they could be retellings of the same events in an oral tradition. Why is that not good enough? And what is the point of telling the backstory of a character like Furiosa when the ending of Fury Road set up a more interesting scenario? They won, they overthrew the bad guys, but we don't get to see what the victory looks like? If you still need the action scenes, you could just have some opportunistic faction show up to do a siege during the transition.

In even worse cases, you have things like the Zelda timeline or Stephen King novels, where there wasn't originally a holistic canon, but one was rationalized later. (And in the case of Zelda, the most recent entries seem to contradict the "official" canon timeline in multiple ways.) Seriously, what is added by establishing an explicit canon for all these separate products? Why can't it just be a series of thematically connected works, like Dark Souls? Or the original middle ground where Zeldas were different incarnations of the same concept, but with no specific relationship between most of them?
R: 21 / I: 2

Do you feel pressured to enjoy the classics of your hobby?

Like you know what I'm talking about
We live in a society where so much of pop culture is never ending referential

WandaVision references old ass TV that I'm sure most of it's viewer base hasn't even ever seen

I don't even think the writer's have, They're just referencing it because that's what you are supposed to do, Like references these days just seem to be self regurgitating references because references can be made, no meaningful purpose behind it, just ooo it's that thing that i saw referenced in that other thing!

Anyway back to our point,
I like comedies, so I feel pressure to watch Happy Days, Taxi, and Honey Mooners and feel like I'm missing out if I don't watch them to build up my history and culture

For e.g some of you who like comic books might feel the same way about all the various billion runs of each character

I don't even know if they'll hold up, and I've basically held the belief that something influential or the first to do it only gives it merit to the history books, Nothing more

Nolanization

when certain adaptations transform super villains or other extraordinary characters into characters that could have come out with the world of a police procedurals or genetic action movie such as regular criminals, mobsters, vague ideological terrorists and serial killers, It happened in the early seasons of Gotham, Arrow and Agents of SHIELD
in Gotham there was a character called Balloon Man, whose comic counterpart is a metahuman with balloon powers but in the show was portrayed as a terrorist who targeted corrupt politicians by strapping them to weather balloons, the Electrocutioner who had electirc was just a sadistic doctor who just electroshocked people and the supervillain dollmaker who had the power to control dolls is a child trafficking organ harvester who also performs surgical experiments on them

There are other examples, but I've made my point. On some level I understand where it's coming from. You don't trust audiences to take outlandish comic book stuff seriously, so you try to make it more "grounded" but the end result is just a character that could have come out of any other police procedural or action movie, just with a weird nickname

CAPESHIT MOVIES

This is the capeshit film thread
Discuss capeshit
I'll admit I hate Marvel films, first off they're some of the glowies films out there, every single one fellates the Pentagon. The plots are almost all identical, filled with general pro-porky propaganda. The jokes are overdone and stale, literally Adam Sandler humor. The CIA is shit for such expensive productions. The characters are getting stale. Fuck these movies, death of cinema shit piles.

3 Body Problem is a Masterpiece

This TV series is absolutely a master piece and should be seen by all the comrades.

In the books, humans only had one way to defend themselves against the advanced trisolarans: the idea of deterrence. This is like how in real life, China keeps its nuclear weapons in case more powerful countries, like the USA, ever threaten them. China wants to protect its land and people, and having these weapons makes other countries think twice before attacking.

The story also shows how the trisolarans manipulate humans through the Sophons. They want to control who holds the power, favoring those who won't use it. This is like the author's belief that China would face problems if it became more democratic or had softer leaders. It's like saying that if China had a leader that other countries liked more, they might try to take advantage of China. So, the story suggests that China is better off being cautious and sticking with its strong leadership.

The way Sophons force humans into reservations in the story is similar to how the USA dealt with native populations long ago. It's a reminder of the dangers of being weak in the face of stronger forces.

Weird exotic fruit

Has anyone trier any unusual fruit? I found the channel of a Yuppie who has traveled thr world eating all kinds of exotic tropic fruit or having it delivered.

https://youtube.com/channel/UChsbD6Clp-ZPqKwXJR3V7DQ

It makes me want to grow some unusual trees. I'm starting with a miracle berry tree. supposedly once eaten the berry causes sour things to taste sweet for thirty minutes. I am excited because it would allow me to basically give up on having sugar in soda. I could just drink lemonade without sugar, and eat bitter healthy food without suffering.

I'm also interested in growing Chico, a cinnamon tasting kind of apple. And there are a ton of sapote I'd like to try eating, and also snake fruit. The truth is most of the food and fruits we eat at super markets are only there because they're easy to produce or shelf long. The best kinds of fruit which are grown for personal taste by farmers are usually not mass producable.

That's why we as lefties need to take the time to plant more exotic fruit trees so those trees will always keep giving back. Then we can share the fruits without relying on supermarkets with the same damb flavors. We can literally eat more gourmet food once we fight back against big agriculture and capitalism.

There are for instance many kinds of bananas and mangoes with different flavors and textures but you'll never see them, when all the bananas at the market are literally from a tree that has been cloned millions of times. Check out his channel or google "exotic fruit" if you've never left your home and don't know what I'm talking about.

Seventeen Moments of Spring

This Soviet TV series is probably the best TV show ever made.
It is pure кино and deeply anti-fascist, anti-imperialist, and anti-USA. It's about a Soviet spy sabotaging peace talks between the OSS and Himmler (to allow the USA and Nazi Germany to team up on the USSR). It was made at the request of the head of the KGB. The tension and drama in this show is outstanding!

Snowpiercer - Why do Americans have the most retarded interpretation of this film imaginable?

Holy shit, I've rarely seen a movie as on the nose and blunt in its critique of capitalist society, and yet Americans seemingly cannot comprehend what it's a criticism of. I've seen "It's about authoritarianism" "It's about the death of free market competition" "It's secretly about socialism!"
Holy fuck, how can it be possible to be as retarded as burgers? It's like unless a film blatantly jumps up and down shouting "CAPITALISM BAD" they literally can't parse out any form of symbolism or allegory at all. Why are these people such idiotic apes?
The writer/director was literally part of the South Korean Socialist Party, tf is the dysfunction in burger brains?

/x/ Files - Esoteric Bolshevik Sorcery Edition

So a buddy of mine works as a security contractor—Mall Cop or Night Watchmen tier stuff. Anyways, he's a Socialist, has a pretty materialist worldview, and has been a skeptic of most idealistic woo-woo for as long as I've known him.

Recently he's been experiencing some genuinely creepy stuff in one of the locations he's been assigned to, and apparently some of his coworkers have too. It started off with weird one-off occurrences: hearing footsteps running behind him only to turn around and see nothing there, hearing doors slamming open and closed on the floor above him, getting an experience of someone breathing behind him. Recently it's gotten a lot worse. He's experienced some strange hallucinations: a black dog running across his path and disappearing into a wall, figures looming over his shoulder or peaking at him from behind corners, and even strange figures staring at him from behind second-story windows. It's spooky stuff, he can't explain it, and neither can I. Not helping things are the weird occult graffiti at his workplace: pentagrams and stuff.

Everything from Ghost Hunting to Occult Philosophy has been a guilty pleasure of mine. And seeing as we don't have a thread on sp00ky shit, I figure I might as well make one.

Consider this the start of the /x/-files! A place to push the boundaries of Socialism to the outer limits of the universe. Everything from Ghosts to ESP to Magic or Cryptids and what their impact on the Socialist movement could be. Questions like:

>Do AyyLmaos exist and are they Comrades?

>Can we summon the specters of dead Revolutionaries for advice?
>Are the Bourgeoisie literally Demons?
>Can Occult rituals stir the global proletariat to action?
And so many more.

Films You Just Watched 2.0

First thread >>2278

I just watched the new Batman movie, it's about as boring and derived as you'd expect. The villain is a real psycho, apparently he hates Bruce Wayne's father because of his scam charity orphanage where children froze to death and the villain himself grew up in, and tries to publicly reveal his father's ties to organized crime and political corruption. Luckily Batman eventually teaches him the true meaning of love and forgiveness before the villain is thrown into an insane asylum for the rest of his days, and the credits roll.

I also watched Memoria, which was just as boring and I have nothing to say about.

Vampire the Masquerade - Leftypol Edition

I haven't played Tabletop RPGs in a hot minute, and I need my fix. I had an idea for a VTM chronicle that emphasizes the "Political Horror" aspect of the gameline. Given this is, ostensibly, a political board I figured it'd be fun to introduce folks here to the World of Darkness and see how they handle it.

I'll be running V5, mostly because that's the version I'm most familiar with. I'll try to find PDF copies of the rulebook to folks unfamiliar with the setting and tutor new players where necessary. I'm making this thread mostly to get a poll of people who are interested and see if I can't work out a time to play. It'll probably take place online. Microphones are necessary.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. I'll probably post the teaser to the chronicle tomorrow.

Support is the focus, so if you're gonna talk in memes, act like a dick, troll, or whatever, don't bother. Some level of maturity required.

Nothing illegal, no "bomb making", gore, nor porn. Provocative yes, edgy no. No commercial focus, all will be released as public domain / CC0.

If that sounds like something for you, drop your email (can be burner) or xmpp address, and I will contact you from a disroot email.

There will never be a fbi.gov, or a matrix chat. XMPP, email and newsletter. If you prefer to give your PGP key (if it is in some public keyserver) that is also fine.

No "entry interviews", no need to write about yourself, who you are or what you think you are. It's all about what you can do and create.

Horror discussion from a leftist perspective

I've seen only a few other threads about horror on here and they seemed too specific, so I thought I'd make a broader one.

How do you feel about the current state of horror media? To me it seems at it's always been in a way; a mixed bag. However I feel like I've noticed this trend and, correct me if you think I'm wrong, a lot of more successful recent horror seems to be more creator-driven than in the past.

This is natural I think, as the internet has opened a lot of opportunities for more unique visions and riskier decisions that large studios would otherwise reject.

In a strange sort of symbiosis, though, these large studios attempt to acquire these successful creators and even properties for themselves; see the phenomenon of Slenderman for example. Once an entirely community made, solely internet creation has gotten several of his own movies, and has by and large become an 'artifact' of sorts of 2010's-era web. Studios cannibalize these unique properties and, once they've made some modicum of a profit, utterly destroy the integrity of them, leaving communities to look for the next big thing in horror.

With that aside, feel free to discuss almost literally anything horror related here; movies, books, ARGs, games, creepypasta (the rare good kind, if you can find any).

The Simpsons

modern simpsons fans are like trots in that they heap praise on the early seasons while they decry later seasons as "not real simpsons!". in reality all seasons are actually existing simpsons and while the later seasons may not be perfect they are still deserving of critical support from dedicated fans. some fans go so far as to point out that even the early seasons had their problems, despite what trots claim, most notably Some Enchanted Evening and Homer's Odyssey. as good Groeningists we should realize that the simpson is not a state of affairs that is to be established, an ideal to which episodes have to adjust themselves. we call the simpsons the real movement which abolishes the present state of things. the conditions of this movement result from the episodes now in existence.

Is there anything more annoying than cheese fans?
They never shut up about how "trad" and "cheesepilled" they are and refuse to eat anything without covering it in so much cheese that it overwhelms the flavour of everything else in meal.
>Bread?
<I'm only eating that if you make it into a cheese sandwich
>Toast?
<I'm only eating that if you grill cheese onto it
>Crackers?
<I'm only eating those if you put small chunks of cheese on them
>Pasta?
<I'm only eating that if you cover it in grated cheese
>Fries?
<I'm only eating them if you put cheese sauce on them
>Burger?
<I'm only eating that if you put cheese in the bun with it
And I could keep going with more examples but you get the idea, the most infuriating part is they only like cheese because they think it's "trad" since it's been around so long.
I bet that if cheese had only been invented a few weeks ago they would claim to hate it and say they're sticking with bread or some other food that's old enough to appear in the bible.

Season 6 sucks

Only the first episode is sci-fi, with a dumb twist, relying on cameos to get people interested. The other five aren't even sci-fi or science fantasy, just pure fantasy. Second episode isn't about anything supernatural, old couple that used to film themselves killing people in a mask, with the antagonist just killing herself at the end.

These feel like film school amateur shorts. Season 6 has no redeeming aspects and I am surprised it was released like this. All the episodes are written by Charlie Brooker, so either he phoned it in, or allowed the directors to do whatever and change it, because he is a pushover.

I have watched some of his other films, that he's either director and co-written, Geronimo, Wind and Lion and Farewell to the King and I get the impression that he just hates neo-liberalism and the modern world and would prefer anything over it.

>The Ur-Quan Doctrinal Conflict or Doctrinal War is the conflict between the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za and Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah to prove which Doctrine (the Kzer-Za Path of Now and Forever or the Kohr-Ah Eternal Doctrine) is superior.
>The Path of Now and Forever is the guiding philosophy of the culture of the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za. In short, it dictates that all other forms of sentient life have the potential to one day enslave the Ur-Quan as the Dnyarri did. To solve this problem, the Path of Now and Forever calls for all sentient life to be either imprisoned within a slave shield as a Fallow Slave, or to serve the Ur-Quan as a Battle Thrall.
>The Eternal Doctrine is how most species refer to the Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah's alternative philosophy to the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za's Path of Now and Forever. It stipulates that to eliminate any future threat to Ur-Quan freedom all non-Ur-Quan sentient species are to be exterminated. While the Kzer-Za, the Melnorme, and most Human sources use the term "Eternal Doctrine", the Kohr-Ah themselves never use this phrase to describe their philosophy, instead calling it the "Path of Now and Forever".

Inside Llewyn Davis

For some reason, I can't stand the Coen Brothers' stuff in general, but this one movie by them has got to be one of my favourites that I've watched so far. It has a lot of rewatch quality for me. There are so many engaging interweaving subplots and side characters within it, and overall it's a pretty good depiction of the drudgery and rejection underneath culture industry.
It still has the pitfalls of the Coens' other stuff, like intentionally unsympathetic characters and a sort of annoyingly overriding deadpan quality, but I can let those pass somehow.

I think this Show and the comics presents how corporations actually feel about conservatism

The origins of trade were never rooted in politics, especially contemporary politics it was just a phenomenon that emerged from the distribution of tokens and capital where some figures wanted to hoard capital for the sake of it. the work of Garth ennis work kind of shows, at least to me that contemporary corporations and companies are still basically the same and will brainlessly serve whatever thing gives them more money and likewise don’t care that much about their customers or their perspectives to any extent that doesn’t immediately benefit profits. I guess the supers just represent how those companies treat those loyal to them, essentially disposable and meant to be hauled around until they run out of their usefulness to their companies, similar to how defence and healthcare companies do little to help veterans in NATO member states or how frequently reactionary groups turn out to blindly support corporations to their own destruction since ww1 to today

/soy/ - Soymaxxing general

>The soybean, soy bean, or soya bean (Glycine max) is a species of legume native to East Asia, widely grown for its edible bean, which has numerous uses.
>Traditional unfermented food uses of soybeans include soy milk, from which tofu and tofu skin are made. Fermented soy foods include soy sauce, fermented bean paste, nattō, and tempeh. Fat-free (defatted) soybean meal is a significant and cheap source of protein for animal feeds and many packaged meals. For example, soybean products, such as textured vegetable protein (TVP), are ingredients in many meat and dairy substitutes.
>Soybeans contain significant amounts of phytic acid, dietary minerals and B vitamins. Soy vegetable oil, used in food and industrial applications, is another product of processing the soybean crop. Soybean is the most important protein source for feed farm animals (that in turn yields animal protein for human consumption).
Post recipes and other tidbits relating to soy. Did you eat soy today? Post about it in here! Everything related to maximizing one's intake of soy and promoting soy culture is on-topic.

Just being Visually stimulating is not enough!

There has been rise in film makers lately who just think if the photographic aspect of their cinema is great that means great cinema. This is just wrong, dead wrong. Cinema is the most powerful mode of story telling and if you are not able to tell anything through this medium then you are just intellectually bankrupt. If I only wanted great photography, I could just browse collection of paintings and photographs. Why would I need to see a film? Text To Speech

tortoise TTS is too slow and making good AI models takes time

websites like elevenlabs and fakeyou are too expensive for mass production of audio. You can get away with shorter stuff for free, however.

for TTS i still use festival scripts piped through libreoffice writer TTS plugin. I can get Linux or Windows to generate an 10 hour audiobook from a pile of text ripped out of a PDF in about a half an hour. Not bad. problem is, it sounds like shit. MP3 attached is an example of the kind of output you get from that.

I previously made this thread:

https://leftypol.org/tech/res/18106.html

I often listen to audiobooks because I'm too busy with kids and work these days to really commit with a hard cover book. I can listen to an audiobook when changing a diaper or doing laundry or at work. I can't do that with a regular book. Problem is, not everything I want to listen to has a professionally made audiobook ready for it, and even if it does, I can't always find a good torrent. I still explore TTS pretty often because I think it has a lot of potential for helping people who don't have time to read a regular book. Also visually impaired and blind people.

Do any of you mess around with TTS? If so, what's your approach?

The "Noble Savage" trope.

99% of the time someone complains about it, it's literally just something like
>the movie depicts settler colonials exterminating wildlife and utterly ravaging the land
>the indigenous people aren't doing that
Favorably contrasting indigenous people with settlers or criticizing colonials' genocidal and ecocidal rampage is not "noble savage." People who say this are just coping about their culture being (rightfully) criticized as specifically and uniquely destructive in a particular historical context. No, the fact that indigenous people hunted bison and made war on each other is not equivalent to wholesale extermination of people and wildlife on the continent (for example). Depicting these people groups as something other that bloodthirsty orcs is not "noble savage." The destructiveness of colonizers is a matter of historical fact, and lamenting the loss of life and cultures that didn't maximize environmental destruction is not inherently fetishizing or romanticizing those people, any more than lamenting the holocaust is inherently fetishizing or romanticizing Jews.

This is not to say that the "noble savage" trope doesn't exist, because it does. Nor is it to say it's not problematic, because it is. It is to say, however, that the "noble savage" as a talking point has primarily served not to critique actual examples of it, but to reinforce colonial stereotypes of indigenous people as barbarous primitives. We shouldn't get rid of the noble savage critique, just constrain it to places where it actually applies - treating indigenous people as in a harmonious state of nature or somehow magically in tune with the environment in a way that others never could be. And at the same time the bulk of the critique should be refocused on the "savage savage" trope, which is the original stereotype and remains the far more prominent, continuing to serve as ideological justification for colonial conquest that is at least as bad as holocaust denial, not least of which because colonial oppression of indigenous people continues to this day the world over.

Discuss.

Etymology thread

Post'em, I'll start

>fabric (n.)

>late 15c. (Caxton), "a building," a sense now obsolete, from Old French fabrique (14c.), verbal noun from fabriquer (13c.), from Latin fabricare "to make, construct, fashion, build," from fabrica "workshop," also "an art, trade; a skillful production, structure, fabric," from faber "artisan who works in hard materials," from Proto-Italic *fafro-, from PIE *dhabh-, perhaps meaning "craftsman" (source also of Armenian darbin "smith," and possibly also Lithuanian dabà "nature, habit, character," dabnùs "smart, well-dressed, elegant;" Russian dobryj "good," Gothic gadob "it fits," Old English gedēfe "fitting;" also see daft).

>From 1630s as "a thing made; a structure of any kind." The sense in English has evolved via "manufactured material" (1753) to "textile, woven or felted cloth" (1791). Compare forge (n.) which is a doublet.

A thread to theorise about media

What is good media?

is anything that isn't directly an anti capitalist allegory automatically bourgeoise trash?

Is watching "high brow" media necessarily high brow? Are you watching as an intellectual exercise. Is watching shit media and being critical of it any less of an intellectual exercise than doing the same for "high brow" media.

Is the emotive experience of some media good on its own merits, in terms of, escapism being good for the human mind?

Is escapist media part of what suppresses the proletariat?

What necessitates a positive media experience, one that is properly healthy and proletarian? To be propagandised at? The good kind of propaganda I mean.

When you watch something imbued with capitalist ideology, and you are watching, supposedly critically, is that not, an educational experience?

Is seeking idle entertainment as part of an otherwise well rounded life a negative character trait?

Billy butcher and syndrome were right

The incredibles and the boys fucking proved how much of a menace to society superheroes would be if they were part of public security and the way the boys showcased the constant infighting between these overglorified children with special gifts fucking verifies the idea that just offing them all would do more to put them(and everyone else that has to die from collateral damage or blatant abuse of power) out of their misery

I don’t like him at all but he’s also my favourite animated superhero

It’s because he accurately portrays how destructive and emotionally immature most protagonists in media actually are. Something only evangelion did right with their portrayal not just of Shinji but the other characters as a whole whose traits wether overconfidence, ambition placed over community or just plane stupidity destroyed the lives and communities surrounding them and the way he devolves into an absolute fucking monster that’s abusing his status in the world he’s in is so painful it’s good and let’s me remember why avoid watching not just superhero shows but most new media in general because the protagonists are always like this but without actual consequences

Apparently Marx originally planned to write 6 total volumes of Capital. Has anyone historically tried to "complete" where he left off?

people usually only think about format when compressing images

they never think about indexed coloring

consider. Same pic. same size. one only uses 24 colors and is only 435 kb. the other is 1.5mb and uses 254 colors. This isn't very significant because the photo is grayscale and doesn't use many colors in the first place. However…

Where did the meme of "Hollywood are prudes when it comes to nudity and sex because of their Puritan ancestors" come from? When in reality the Hays Code was created and enforced by Roman Catholics.

>astronaut and cosmonaut in the same small moonbase
>both reflect on parenthood and bond
>emotional speech about there's enough of the moon for everyone, that the moon was declared for all mankind
>cosmonaut helps astronaut pull of far-flung stunt to save fellow americans
>part ways

>lol evil gommie man sabotages base

this show is so fucking good so far I just wish the soviets weren't the default bad guys just cuz they put a woman on the moon first or whatever
