How do Stalin and Mao fit the equation? China's development is readily explained by the socialist project they've been embarking on. Whether you personally don't think their brand of socialism is True Socialism or whatever doesn't take away from the fact that they've been engaging in what they call socialism, of which "heterodox" political economics of the Marxist variety have played a huge role.

Chinese scholars don't deny that China's mode of production is primarily capitalist. But to say that it is a society with a DotB is simply not enough to explain China.
