Israel accused of arming Palestinian gang who allegedly looted aid in Gaza
Abu Shabab’s group has previously been accused of involvement in smuggling operations linked to Egyptian jihadi groups. A security official told Israeli news outlet Ynet that the arming of Abu Shabab was approved and led by the Shin Bet internal security service, and described the operation as “planned and managed”, with the goal of “reducing Israeli military casualties while systematically undermining Hamas through targeted strikes, infrastructure destruction and the promotion of rival local forces.”

Report: Israel contributed NIS 700m to Gaza aid mechanism it claims not to fund
The Israeli government has transferred hundreds of millions of shekels to fund the new humanitarian aid mechanism in the Gaza Strip, Kan news reported Wednesday, contradicting government officials who have insisted that Israel has no part in its funding. According to the report, the government approved the transfer of NIS 700 million (some $280 million) last month to an unclear source, identified by the government only as “the defense establishment.”

Turkish prosecutors investigate main opposition leader as five mayors dismissed
The clampdown is centred on Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival and leads him in some opinion polls. The CHP's Imamoglu was jailed in March pending trial on corruption charges, which he denies. The Istanbul prosecutor's office said in a statement that it had launched the probe into CHP leader Ozgur Ozel over comments he made about the chief prosecutor at a rally in Istanbul on Wednesday, criticising the targeting of the opposition.

Argentina’s Lower House Approves Pension Hike Despite Milei’s Opposition
Lawmakers also approved an extension of the pension moratorium program, which allows individuals who lack 30 years of social security contributions to purchase the missing years and thus qualify for a minimum pension. The measures passed with 142 votes from Peronist, centrist, and leftist lawmakers. Sixty-seven lawmakers voted against the proposals, including members of Freedom Advances — the party led by far-right President Javier Milei — and his allies, such as lawmakers from Republican Proposal, the party of former President Mauricio Macri. Nineteen lawmakers abstained.

Supreme Court rejects Mexico lawsuit against US gunmakers
The court voted 9-0 to reject the suit, in the process upholding a 2005 law that shields gun manufacturers from liability if weapons they produce are misused. Mexico's government had argued that the "flood" of illegal guns across the border is a result of "deliberate" practices by US firms that they say appealed to cartel members with their products. The decision overturns a lower court's ruling that allowed the suit, brought against manufacturer Smith & Wesson and wholesaler Interstate Arms, to proceed.

The review also identified safety issues at the residential campuses. The Department of Labor said it would transition students and staff out of the locations by June 30. As Louisiana’s governor faces ethics charges, his lawyer raises bar for future ethics investigations
Proponents say the measures give those accused of ethics violations more opportunities to respond to allegations, increases transparency and limits abuses of a process they claim is often unjust. But watchdog groups — and the Board of Ethics — warn the changes will undermine the board’s ability to hold public officials accountable. While the changes would not apply to Landry’s current charges, the legislation further bolsters the governor’s power over a state board largely made up of his own appointees. A revised version of the bill, passed by the Senate earlier this week, awaits approval in the House.

Procter & Gamble to cut 7,000 jobs, exit brands as consumer uncertainty weighs
The company had about 108,000 employees as of June 2024. The job cuts would account for roughly 15% of its non-manufacturing workforce. P&G expects to record charges of $1 billion to $1.6 billion before-tax over the two-year period, with a quarter of the charges expected to be non-cash.

Landlord lobby will boost Cuomo with $2.5M spend
The organization, which primarily represents operators of rent-regulated apartment buildings, plans to run ads in English and Spanish on broadcast and cable television, radio and the web — “we’re doing the whole shebang,” Burgos said. The advertisements aren’t ready yet, he said, but they’ll put a positive sheen on the former governor’s housing plans, rather than attack Mamdani. Any spending will have to come soon as the race enters its final stretch. The Democratic primary is June 24, and early voting begins June 14.

Big Tech’s Monopoly Money
There’s a new evil genius on Capitol Hill, one that privacy experts warn could empower tech billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg to issue their own private currencies. The Senate is poised to pass the GENIUS Act, which would give so much free rein to such “stablecoins” that it could destabilize the rest of the economy. Today on Lever Time, Arjun Singh sits down with Lever reporter Luke Goldstein to understand the GENIUS Act, how it could turn Big Tech companies into unregulated banks, and why this should be a concern for the rest of us.

Ukraine war: European leaders prolong the carnage
The war in Ukraine continues well into its third year. But since the election of Donald Trump, the dynamics have changed dramatically. The war never had anything to do with Ukraine’s sovereignty. It was provoked by US imperialism under Biden, with the stated aim of teaching Russia a lesson and making sure it was unable to defy the west. Ukraine was just a pawn to be used for that purpose. But the war has been a complete disaster – both for US and European imperialism, but above all for Ukraine.

Czech government attempts to ban communist activity: "Communists will never be silenced", says KSCM
In a another episode of anti-communist hysteria, the Czech Chamber of Deputies approved on Sunday 30 May an amendment to the Criminal Code that criminalizes the promotion of communist ideology, making it punishable by up to five years imprisonment! More specifically, the amendment invokes the known, unhistorical and shameful theory of the "two extremes", thus equating communism with the monster of nazism; under the amended criminal law, the public display of the sickle and hammer or the Soviet flag would incur similar penalty as bearing swastikas or other Third Reich symbols! During the last two decades, Czech Republic, alongside Poland and the Baltic States, are in the front lines of the anti-communist crusade, promoted and coordinated by the European Union and its institutions. We remind that two years ago, Dr. Josef Skala, a high-ranking cadre of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSCM), was persecuted by Czech authorities for challenging the official narrative on the Katyn massacre!
