The average boomer became aware of politics only in the late 80s up until then his only experience with politics was basically apolitical marxism classes were they just studied how partizans/tito were good and play pretend protests that the party would organize for causes nobody cared or knew anything about.
This all changed in the 80s when from a state of apolitical everything became political and in the 90s these politics became deadly you could lose your head over them.
Conspiracy is also a big staple but again you have to understand them here conspiracies are real.The very first colored revolution happened here and they all fell for it they all saw it,secret services do play a big role in politics here and false flags the staple of conspiracies are actually real.
Poverty also played a big role once you fall into it its easy to fall into all kinds of shady organizations and its hard to accept sometimes that movements and ideas you wanted to kill for were wrong,its why the guy you said seems normal his secure lifestyle afforded him to watch this from the sides and not participate in it.
