India is a perpetrator of foreign interference, Canadian intelligence agency says
"Indian officials, including their Canada-based proxy agents, engage in a range of activities that seek to influence Canadian communities and politicians," the Canadian Security Intelligence Service report reads. Pakistan fears militants will thrive on restive border if Iran destabilised
As well as worrying about chaos spilling over from Iran, Pakistan is concerned about the precedent set by Israel of attacking the nuclear installations of another country. Nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India fought a four-day conflict in May. Following a Wednesday lunch at the White House with Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, Trump said: “They’re not happy about anything”, referring to Pakistan's views on the Israel-Iran conflict. Pakistan’s military said on Thursday that the two had discussed Iran,“with both leaders emphasizing the importance of resolution of the conflict”.

Iran: Jailed women activists issue letter condemning Israeli attacks
Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, Verisheh Moradi, Sakineh Parvaneh and Reyhaneh Ansarinejad issued the letter, published by the pro-Kurdish Firat News Agency, from Evin prison in Tehran. They accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and said its goal was to create a "weak and submissive" Middle East. "Our liberation…from the dictatorship ruling the country is possible through the struggle of the masses and by resorting to social forces - not by clinging to foreign powers or placing hopes in them," they wrote. "The powers that have always brought destruction to the countries of the region through exploitation and colonisation, by inciting wars and killing in pursuit of greater benefits, will have no way out for us except for new destruction and exploitation."

French court to rule on freeing Lebanese militant
The Paris appeals court, initially set to deliver its verdict in February before postponing, will now announce its decision on July 17 after re-examining the request on Thursday. "I told the judges, either you release him or you sentence him to death," his lawyer Jean-Louis Chalanset told the media after the closed-door hearing. Abdallah, 74, was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the murders of US military attache Charles Robert Ray and Israeli diplomat Yacov Barsimantov. He has been eligible for release for 25 years, but has seen multiple requests for his freedom denied.

Spain rejects Nato's ‘unreasonable’ proposal to hike military spending to 5% of GDP
In a letter sent today to Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that Spain “cannot commit to a specific spending target in terms of GDP” at next week’s Nato summit in The Hague. For Spain, ”committing to a 5 per cent target would not only be unreasonable, but also counterproductive,” wrote Mr Sanchez in the letter.

Czech government survives no-confidence vote over bitcoin scandal
The no-confidence motion followed a scandal that saw Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blažek from Fiala’s conservative Civic Democratic Party (ODS) resign last month after accepting a €40 million bitcoin donation to the ministry from a convicted drug dealer. The cryptocurrency was provided by Tomáš Jiřikovský, who according to the courts ran an illegal darknet market that had drugs for sale, and who had served time in prison for embezzlement, drug trafficking and illegal possession of weapons. Czech newspaper Deník N broke the news last week that police are investigating the donation.

Rwanda and DR Congo agree draft peace deal to end conflict
The US hopes to bring an end to the fighting and to unlock billions of dollars of Western investment in the eastern DRC, which has large mineral reserves including cobalt, copper, gold and lithium. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described the twin aims of peace and investment as a “win-win”. As part of the diplomatic efforts, Massad Boulos, the US envoy to Africa, travelled to the DRC and Rwanda in April. During his visit, he urged Kigali to end its support for the M23 rebels.

New Zealand has suspended millions in funding to the Cook Islands over its growing China ties
News of the 18.2 million New Zealand dollar ($11 million) funding halt only emerged when a Cook Islands news outlet saw its brief mention in a government budget document. It’s likely to prove difficult for Luxon, who is due to meet President Xi Jinping this week. Beijing, which said in February that the deals were not intended to antagonize New Zealand, defended its partnership with the country of 15 islands and 15,000 people.

'No war on Iran': New Yorkers rally against US and Israeli regime change plans
On a sweltering summer evening in New York City on Wednesday, hundreds of protesters assembled on the steps of the New York Public Library in Manhattan to convey what they said was a clear message to the city and country's elected officials: "No War on Iran". The emergency protest, organised by a coalition of advocacy groups in New York and in several cities across the country, came as rumours swirled of a possible announcement of direct US military intervention in Israel's attacks on Iran. More than 585 Iranians have been killed since Israel launched its aerial strikes on 13 June over claims Iran was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons.

US judge invalidates Biden rule protecting privacy for abortions
A federal judge on Wednesday struck down a rule adopted by the administration of former President Joe Biden that strengthened privacy protections for women seeking abortions and patients who receive gender transition treatments. U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, Texas, said the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services exceeded its powers and unlawfully limited states' ability to enforce their public health laws when it adopted the rule last year.

New US visa rules will force foreign students to unlock social media profiles
Foreign students will be required to unlock their social media profiles to allow US diplomats to review their online activity before receiving educational and exchange visas, the state department has announced. Those who fail to do so will be suspected of hiding that activity from US officials. The new guidance, unveiled by the state department on Wednesday, directs US diplomats to conduct an online presence review to look for “any indications of hostility toward the citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles of the United States”. A cable separately obtained by Politico also instructs diplomats to flag any “advocacy for, aid or support for foreign terrorists and other threats to US national security” and “support for unlawful antisemitic harassment or violence”.

Outrage as DHS moves to restrict lawmaker visits to detention centers
The US Department of Homeland Security is now requiring lawmakers to provide 72 hours of notice before visiting detention centers, according to new guidance. … However, in the new guidance, the DHS updated the language to say that Ice “will make every effort to comply with the law” but “exigent circumstances (e.g,m operational conditions, security posture, etc.) may impact the time of entry into the facility”. The new guidance also attempts to distinguish Ice field offices from Ice detention facilities, noting that since “Ice field offices are not detention facilities” they do not fall under the visitation requirements laid out in the Appropriations Act.

Supreme Court lets EPA air pollution battles play out in regional courts
It's a win for several red states and conservative lawmakers, who argued the Clean Air Act enables regional challenges to EPA's rejection of 21 states' plans in 2023. And as E&E News points out, appellate courts in Republican-leaning areas are "often seen as friendlier to state and industry interests." Over two-dozen states including New York and Michigan argued in favor of centralizing the disputes in the D.C. circuit.

New York police search for a suspect and a motive after 11 police vehicles are torched
The NYPD on Wednesday released photos and a video of the suspect, a 21-year-old man from New Jersey, and asked the public for help finding him. He remained at large as of Thursday. SM of Kazakhstan, Joint Statement: No turning Kazakhstan into a lifeless desert due to the activities of Western companies!
The Communist and Workers' parties note that in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, French, British and American companies are seizing rare earth metal deposits. Memoranda on granting mining rights were signed at the «EU–Central Asia» and «Italy–Central Asia» summits. This will have huge consequences for the environment, agriculture and local peoples, as it will actually lead to the destruction of vast lands that will not be subject to reclamation, as well as poisoning of groundwater in a situation of desertification and radioactive contamination of the area, since these elements are extracted together with radiation cesium and thorium. An example is the disaster in the Caspian Sea, where artificial islands were created in the Northeastern part of the sea as a result of the activities of American and European companies within the NCOC consortium, underwater channels were dug, which raised 20 million tons of soil and caused oil and hydrogen sulfide leaks, which have already killed 90% of the biomass, and the shores They are littered with corpses of dead seals, dead fish and seagulls.

Is Greece Becoming a Non-Viable Nation State?
A Greek newspaper editor, Nikos Konstandaras, said in the midst of the country’s debt crisis, in 2013, that: “The Greeks are in a struggle for survival. And the odds are piling up against us. The fight is not only on the economic front… that has resulted in greatly reduced incomes, higher costs and taxes, and an overriding sense of insecurity. The danger is even more basic: Deaths are outnumbering births, people are leaving the country, and the population is aging so fast that in a few decades Greece may be unable to produce enough wealth to take care of its people and may cease to be a viable nation state…. in Greece the battle for economic survival is so overwhelming that no one has time for the bigger picture…. In village after village, the elderly outnumber locals and immigrants of working age. The most frightening figure is a Eurostat projection which estimates that, in 2050, 32.1 percent of the Greek population will be over 65, compared with 16.6 percent in 2000. And this projection was made in 2007, before the crisis hit Greece’s population. We were still living high, before widespread unemployment, hasty retirement and the emigration of those with the skills to succeed abroad. New projections will most likely be much worse.”
Ten years later, in 2023, the situation, demographic and economic, didn’t improve very much, if at all. In 2023, “The Greece of today,” said the Greek demographer Byron Kotzamanis, “is very different from that of the first post-war period. Our population has increased by three million since 1951, we live much longer, we are ‘older’, we have fewer children and fewer marriages, we have many more deaths, our natural balances are negative, we divorce more easily, and we live mainly in urban centers; at the same time, our population, from previously being relatively ‘ethnically homogeneous’, now includes about 900,000 foreigners living permanently in our country. The implications of both past and expected changes are manifold, and political parties and social, professional and scientific bodies, as well as public opinion, are showing an increasing interest in both current developments and the future demographic course of Greece…. half of Greece’s population [in 2023] is concentrated in 2.9% of its total surface area [in the cities] (compared to 25.6% in the early 1950s) and two-thirds in 6.4% of the surface area (compared to 50% in 1951), while 76 out of 100 inhabitants now live in urban centers (compared to only 36 in 1951).”

Iran war: “those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad”
It is a well-known fact that in order to prepare the ground for an act of aggression, it is imperative that the aggressor must appear as the victim. Black must be painted white. And white must be painted black. Netanyahu had to divert attention from his own growing unpopularity by pointing an accusing finger at an external enemy that may be even more unpopular than himself. To this end, he skilfully played on the feelings of fear of Iran that have been built up and deliberately exacerbated by the Israeli ruling clique for decades. This was now concentrated on the question of the alleged threat of an Iranian nuclear bomb. All the most informed sources – including in the United States – have concluded that the threat of Iran developing such a weapon in a short space of time is not a viable proposition. It is true that the Iranians possess all that is necessary ultimately to produce their own nuclear weapons. But this by no means signifies a “real and present threat” to Israel, as Netanyahu is presenting it. On the contrary, the US intelligence agencies have made clear that there is no question of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons for another three years. All this is ignored as the drumbeat of war grows ever louder and more persistent.
