Colombia’s Congress approves historic labor reform, Petro withdraws referendum
Multiple articles in the reform seek to make it more difficult companies to perpetually employ workers on a temporary basis, including those who are employed in the so-called gig economy. Companies will have to pay extra compensation for labor between 7PM and 6AM Some 69,000 “community mothers,” men and women who provide care and education to kids from the neighborhood, will be formally integrated into and paid by the Family Welfare Institute. Some 400,000 students who do an internship are granted full labor rights and be paid in full for their services.Workers who work on Sundays and holidays will be paid double instead of 175% of the normal wage. The government and its coalition in Congress conceded in demanding menstrual leave for women, which was left out of the reform.

New Rio de Janeiro law requires public hospitals to display anti-abortion signs
A new law has just come into force in Rio de Janeiro requiring all public hospitals and clinics run by the municipal government to display anti-abortion signs bearing messages such as: “Did you know that the unborn child is discarded as hospital waste?” Reproductive rights activists view the act as the latest example of a growing trend across Brazil to further restrict access to abortion in a country that already has some of the world’s most restrictive laws.

Security review launched after activists break into RAF base
Palestine Action said the activists evaded security and claimed they had put the air-to-air refuelling tankers "out of service". However, RAF engineers are assessing the damage and a defence source told the BBC they did not expect the incident to affect operations. In a statement, a Palestine Action spokesperson said: "Despite publicly condemning the Israeli government, Britain continues to send military cargo, fly spy planes over Gaza and refuel US and Israeli fighter jets."

Employees at firm that supplied grape-pickers for champagne on trial for human trafficking
The workers, from countries including Mali, Mauritania, Ivory Coast and Senegal, were allegedly given too little food – either rice or sandwiches that were rotting. They were said to be transported to vineyards crammed into the back of vans, standing up, with no seats or windows. Some told investigators they worked for 10 hours with only a 30-minute break and were threatened if they wanted to rest or drink water.

Putin says Russia has shared peace proposals with Israel and Iran
He said Moscow asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ensure the security of Russian personnel who are working to construct two more reactors at the nuclear power plant in Iran’s port of Bushehr and that he also raised the issue with U.S. President Donald Trump. “Prime Minister Netanyahu has agreed with that, and President Trump has promised to support our legitimate demands,” Putin said. But he strongly rejected allegations that Moscow has failed to back its ally, Tehran, saying the Kremlin has maintained good ties with both Iran and Israel. He noted that Israel is home to nearly 2 million people from Russia and other former Soviet nations, “a factor that we always have taken into account.”

Israeli army attacks cause near-total collapse of internet in Iran, sparking concerns over censorship
Leading internet activity monitor NetBlocks announced on Wednesday that Iran is now experiencing a near-total collapse of internet activity, which they linked to ongoing Israeli army attacks. The monitor cited live data from several areas, which showed significant disconnection across the country, which they said meant that internet access had become largely inaccessible.

Judge orders pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil released from jail
U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz determined that Khalil isn’t a flight risk or a danger to the community, and lightly rebuked the government, calling its effort to continue seeking his detention “highly, highly unusual.” The judge ordered Khalil to be released from custody at some point Friday, a step that will allow him to return to New York to be reunited with his wife and newborn baby, who was born during Khalil’s detention.

US Supreme Court upholds law allowing Palestinian authorities to be sued over attacks
The 9-0 ruling overturned a lower court's decision that the 2019 law, the Promoting Security and Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act, violated the rights of the Palestinian Authority and Palestine Liberation Organization to due process under the U.S. Constitution. … "It is permissible for the federal government to craft a narrow jurisdictional provision that ensures, as part of a broader foreign policy agenda, that Americans injured or killed by acts of terror have an adequate forum in which to vindicate their right" to compensation under a federal law known as the Antiterrorism Act of 1990, Roberts wrote.

Protesters were seen lighting fireworks and moving what appeared to be a dumpster in front of the ICE facility. Federal agents were seen deploying flash-bangs at the crowd.

The letter from Warren requested answers by 2 July on whether USAID is considering awarding any funds to the GHF, the terms of a possible agreement and the GHF’s connections to the Boston Consulting Group, which reportedly helped set up the group’s operations. That includes much of the national forests that surround Grand Teton National Park: the Bridger-Teton National Forest on the east side of Jackson Hole and the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, which directly borders the western side of the Tetons.

NY Court Ruling Will Force Retired Workers Into Privatized, For-Profit Medicare Advantage Plans
New York State's highest court on Wednesday ruled against city retirees who had sought to block an effort by Mayor Eric Adams' administration to move them onto a for-profit, privatized Medicare Advantage plan. In a unanimous decision, New York Court of Appeals Judge Shirley Troutman wrote that petitioners in the case are not entitled to "promissory estoppel" cause of action, the argument that the retirees throughout their employment with the city were promised traditional Medicare benefits when they retired.

The Chinese developer Greenland and its investors were supposed to complete the affordable housing by the end of May, according to the terms of a 2014 agreement. But when the deadline came and went, the state’s economic development authority opted to suspend the $1.75 million in monthly penalties outlined in the 11-year-old contract. West Papua’s Forever War
Mehrtens’s kidnapping was also a major embarrassment for the political elite in Jakarta, and a sign of the military’s failure to “secure” and “pacify” West Papua by armed force. Shortly after his release, Indonesia’s newly elected president, Prabowo Subianto, assumed office, having been elected on a demagogic nationalist agenda. He had secured nearly 60 percent of the vote, aided by the fact that his running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, happened to be the son of his predecessor, the vastly popular Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. Since taking office, Prabowo has “increased the use of excessive violence and force,” according to Theo Hesegem, a human rights defender. “The violence in West Papua’s central highlands has increased greatly,” he tells me. Even worse, he adds, the increased deployments of thousands of military personnel grew beyond the president’s control, paving the way for isolated army units to commit atrocities and human rights crimes against unarmed and unprotected civilians without any risk of legal punishment. Shortly after Mehrtens’s release, “a silent TNI [Indonesian military] operation” swept through Yuguru, and a suspected independence activist, twenty-seven-year-old Abral Wandikbo, was kidnapped, killed, mutilated, and later found dead in a community plantation area. Reports from various isolated areas in the central highlands have proven to Hesegem that kidnappings, summary executions, and mutilations are “part of a pattern of TNI’s working methods” in West Papua, and that the tragic fate of Abral Wandikbo is merely one of many in this region. Witnesses have provided accounts and photo documentation of mutilated ears, mouths, noses, and testicles: crimes inflicted upon civilians by TNI units sweeping through refugee communities shortly after massive air raids initiated by the Jakarta government. “The military apparatus doesn’t distinguish between civilians and the TPNPB-OPM,” says Hesegem. West Papua remains an enclosed conflict zone, off-limits for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, international human rights groups, independent journalists, and humanitarian aid organizations. Instead, local church missions and poorly equipped regional administrations must cope with an alarming crisis of hunger, lacking health care facilities, and between 60,000 and 100,000 IDPs according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. “There’s absolutely no end in sight for the IDPs,” Hesegem tells me.

Organizing to keep ICE out of your workplace - Keith Robertson
When ICE comes to your workplace, it can be over before you know it. Because they know that the community is opposed to them, ICE has adapted their tactics to be sneaky and fast. That’s why we need to be organized and ready to stand up to them the second they show up. The solidarity of immediate bystanders can mean the difference between deportation and freedom, and, as we’ve seen, can spark waves of resistance. So when ICE comes to your workplace, be organized to stop them. Blocking Trump’s deportation raids is one of the most critical tactics in this moment. Trump’s approach to his first six months in office has been to “flood the zone” with so many outrageous attacks that his opposition doesn’t know where to focus and respond. At this point, almost all of us have been affected by one or more of the assaults Trump has made to advance his vision of autocratic, white-male, billionaire rule. And of course we are all witness to the crushing genocide in Gaza and widening Israeli war across the Middle East that Trump is facilitating. Despite this, opposition was disappointingly frail until neighbors and coworkers began physically standing up to la migra and disrupting their deportation operations. This is because these raids are both massively hated, and are a concrete manifestation of Trump’s policy that we can directly impact. When neighbors confront immigration raids, it is a direct confrontation with Trump’s core policy of mass deportation. Even though it only involved a few hundred people at first, the confrontation with ICE and CBP in Los Angeles arguably had a bigger impact than the hundreds of thousands who marched in the No Kings protests a week later. Seeing that it is possible to stand up to Trump and defend our neighbors and coworkers has a massive mobilizing effect on everyone who has been overwhelmed by the past six months and doesn’t know where to start.
