Proletariat doesn't just mean sweatshop workers, it means the worker class, which is the majority of Americans. Most Americans have to work for a living under capitalism, which allows the owning class to exploit them.
There are also reasons for the petite-bourgeoisie to support socialism/communism, but unfortunately they're generally too short-sighted to tolerate losing their privilege and siding with the workers.
