Israel's Eilat port to shut down over unpaid debts triggered by Houthi attacks
The Israeli business and economics newspaper The Calcalist reported on Thursday that the Eilat municipality had frozen the port's bank accounts, amounting to approximately 10 million shekels ($3m), due to unpaid taxes. The newspaper reported that the port had recorded a steep drop in revenue due to Houthi attacks on ships linked to Israel. Israel's Shipping and Ports Authority said on Wednesday that due to the "financial crisis it has entered due to the ongoing conflict, the Eilat Municipality informed the port's management of the seizure of all its bank accounts due to debts owed to the municipality.

US strikes destroyed only one of three Iranian nuclear sites, reports
The report said that US officials believe the attack on Iran's Fordow nuclear facility was successful in setting back enrichment capabilities there by as much as two years, citing two current officials. The two other facilities that the US struck were not as badly damaged and may have been degraded only to a point where nuclear enrichment could resume in the next several months if Iran wants it to, the report added. Reuters could not immediately verify the NBC report. The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

New Israeli incursion | Limited Israeli forces advance near Al-Rafid and renewed military movements along Golan line
Earlier today, several Israeli military vehicles escorting vehicles carrying soldiers have advanced into the predominantly-Druze town of Qal’at Jandal in Qatna area in the southern Rif Dimashq. This bizarre development in border areas inside Syria has triggered a state of tension in the region, especially with the sensitive location of Qal’at Jandal town on the border strip with the occupied Syrian Golan, and which is located only 35 kilometers away from the capital Damascus.

French court orders pro-Palestinian Lebanese fighter freed after 40 years
“We’re delighted. I didn’t expect the French judiciary to make such a decision nor for him to ever be freed, especially after so many failed requests for release,” he was quoted as saying. “For once, the French authorities have freed themselves from Israeli and US pressures.” Abdallah’s lawyer Jean-Louis Chalanset also welcomed the decision: “It’s both a judicial victory and a political scandal that he was not released earlier.” Abdallah is expected to be deported to Lebanon. Prosecutors may file an appeal with France’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, but it is not expected to be processed quickly enough to halt his release next week.

Merz rules out company tax and joint borrowing in EU budget
In its plan, presented Wednesday, the Commission proposed an EU tax on high-turnover companies and a €400 billion crisis fund, potentially to be financed via joint borrowing. The plan fired the starting gun for what will be two years of haggling between the EU executive, national capitals and the European Parliament, all of which must agree before the spending plan can be approved.

Athens, Greece: Comrades Accused of ‘Conspiracy Vengeance/Armed Response’ Case Attempt Escape
Thursday 10/7, in the Loukareos courts, some of the accused chose the path to freedom, even at the risk of their own lives. Despite the protection measures of the state apparatus and without any scruples about the consequences of this decision, they clashed with the cops, managing to wrest the weapon from one and immobilize a second. However, in their attempt to free the remaining accused, the cops regrouped and the escape attempt ended.

Unemployment hits four-year high as earnings stagnate
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the rate of UK unemployment increased to 4.7 per cent in the three months to May, from 4.6 per cent in April, the highest level since June 2021. As with the rise in prices, this was worse than economists had been predicting, suggesting the situation is deteriorating fast, with gross domestic product shrinking for the last two months. And average earnings growth slowed to 5 per cent in the period to May to its lowest level for almost three years. ONS director of economic statistics Liz McKeown said: “The labour market continues to weaken, with the number of employees on payroll falling again, though revised tax data shows the decline in recent months is less pronounced than previously estimated.

Fascist terrorist cell uncovered in Canada’s military
The arrest last week of two active members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), a CAF veteran, and an Army Cadet trainer in an armed terrorist plot has exposed, yet again, that Canada’s military is serving as an incubator of fascist forces. Five years after a CAF reservist sought to assassinate then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and as the ruling class showers the military with tens of billions of dollars in additional funding, far-right activities among CAF members clearly continue unabated.

El Salvador’s top human rights group flees President Bukele’s ongoing crackdown on dissent
The organization has been one of the most visible critics of Bukele, documenting abuses in the strongman’s war on the country’s gangs and the detention of hundreds of Venezuelan deportees in an agreement with U.S. President Donald Trump. Bukele’s government has long targeted opponents, but Cristosal Executive Director Noah Bullock said things reached a tipping point in recent months as Bukele has grown empowered by his alliance with Trump.

Brazil passes ‘devastation bill’ that drastically weakens environmental law
The new law – widely referred to as the “devastation bill” and already approved by the senate in May – passed in congress in the early hours of Thursday by 267 votes to 116, despite opposition from more than 350 organisations and social movements. It now goes to the president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has 15 working days to either approve or veto it. Even if he vetoes the legislation, there is a strong chance that the predominantly conservative congress will overturn that, triggering a likely battle in the supreme court, as legal experts argue that the new law is unconstitutional.

Taiwan launches ‘urban resilience’ drills to test war readiness amid PLA pressure
The drills were held alongside the island’s annual Han Kuang military exercise, Taiwan’s largest and most comprehensive war games. This year marks the first time that the government has officially integrated its long-running civil response and air defence drills into a single, comprehensive “urban resilience exercise”. At 1.30pm, air-raid sirens sounded across northern Taiwan, prompting a coordinated response that included the evacuation of civilians and vehicles, lighting blackouts, and shelter-in-place procedures. In Taipei, mass rapid transit (MRT) stations implemented “entry-only” protocols, with passengers instructed to remain underground. Streets emptied, traffic stopped, and businesses shut their doors – transforming the capital into a wartime simulation.

Indiana Kroger workers reject second sellout contract approved by UFCW Local 700
As of this writing, Local 700 has not released the vote totals. But even though workers also authorized a strike in their first vote against the contract, the union bureaucracy has said nothing about a job action and refused to prepare the workers for a walkout. The tentative agreement included only a 90 cent increase over 3 years for starting pay and a $200 Kroger gift card. Workers described this as “insulting,” and a slap in the face amid rising living costs and record corporate profits.

DoJ seeks single-day sentence for officer who fired into Breonna Taylor’s home
Brett Hankison is set to be sentenced on Monday after being found guilty in November 2024 of one count of civil rights abuse for shooting into Taylor’s bedroom window, which was covered by blinds and a blackout curtain, during a narcotics raid on the wrong home. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, which justice department attorneys argued should be drastically reduced. Hankison’s bullets pierced the apartment nextdoor, where a couple with a five-year-old child lived. None of his shots hit Taylor, her boyfriend Kenneth Walker, who was in the room, or her neighbors, investigators found.

Stablecoin regulation bill heads to Trump's desk
The GENIUS Act is set to be the first cryptocurrency bill signed into law after it cleared both chambers of Congress, an institution that is notoriously slow to respond to emerging technologies. The vote was 308-122, with 102 Democrats joining all but 12 Republicans in supporting the bill.

US health department hands over Medicaid personal data to ICE
The U.S. health department is giving Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials access to the personal data of 79 million Medicaid enrollees to help them track down immigrants who may not be living legally in the country, it said on Thursday. Giving ICE access to the personal data of Medicaid enrollees marks an escalation in President Donald Trump's hardline immigration policies. It may also raise privacy concerns under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, known as HIPAA.

Trump supporters burn Maga hats after he dismisses Epstein files furor as ‘hoax’
Trump’s former vice-president, Mike Pence, told CBS News on Wednesday that “I think the time has come for the administration to release all of the files regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s investigation and prosecution”, while the conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, a frequent close adviser to Trump, called for the appointment of a special counsel to handle the Epstein files investigation. “Obviously, this is not a complete hoax given the fact that [Epstein associate] Ghislaine Maxwell is currently serving 20 years in prison in Florida for her crimes and activities with Jeffrey Epstein, who we know is a convicted sexual predator,” she said.

What Bernie Sanders told Zohran Mamdani about antisemitism and pushing back on Democratic leaders
Ahead of the trip, Mamdani told business leaders in New York that he would discourage the use of the phrase “globalize the intifada.” Mamdani, who has not used the phrase himself, has said he believes the phrase to be a rallying cry for Palestinian human rights and refused to condemn its use when asked during his primary campaign. According to the person familiar with their conversation, Sanders told Mamdani he had to do a better job explaining that his criticism is not antisemitic and to not let himself seem like he’s minimizing the fear Jews in New York and elsewhere feel from the threat of hate against them.

Citing security threats, California lawmakers want to shield their addresses from public
One proposal would ban journalists from accessing that information through candidates’ and public officials’ voter registration records, even though there is no indication the Minnesota shooter used those kinds of records to track down his victims. Officials’ voter registration data is already confidential to most of the public. It is available to a select few, including journalists. But AB 1392, authored by Assemblymember LaShae Sharp-Collins of La Mesa and sponsored by Secretary of State Shirley Weber’s office, would eliminate that carve-out and effectively block journalists’ access to politicians’ phone numbers, emails and home addresses and prior voter registration.

Successful wildcat at Hinkley C
An unofficial strike of construction site workers at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset began on Wednesday (July 9) due to alleged bullying from senior management. The strikers worked for the MEH (mechanical, electrical and HVAC) alliance of contractors which brings together Altrad Services, Cavendish, Balfour Beatty, NG Bailey and Altrad Babcock. One striker told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “This bullying has been going on for far too long.” A contract worker on the project told the Guardian one of the incidents was believed to have involved a senior manager bullying a young woman on the team. He stated: “They’ve had enough, and they’re out the gate.” Unite the Union did not support the strike, with strikers reportedly “furious” it was not backing them. A Unite spokesperson claimed: “Unite understands a number of workers took part in a protest over management practices. This has resulted in them being removed from the site for the remainder of today. Unite expects this matter to be resolved soon.” The union representative was joined by a Hinkley Point C spokesperson who stated: “We join with our trades union partners in asking that the correct process is followed to resolve any grievance. Normal working throughout the site has been unaffected by this unofficial action.” It is unclear how many workers participated in the strike. One striker initially reported on July 9 that 3,000–4,000 people had walked out. But a source closer to management claimed there were under 2,000 MEH staff and most of these had still been working. It is worth acknowledging that is in the interests of management to lower the morale of the strikers by implying their numbers were small and also that workers may have participated in the strike who were not part of the MEH alliance. Regardless of the exact number - clearly an impressive number of workers participated in this wildcat strike. Despite the anti-strike position of Unite, the strikers managed to successfully picket the site. A video seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service showed a “huge group of people stood outside the turnstiles at the Hinkley Point C bus station, while one man was blocked from going through the turnstiles.” One worker for a different company who was not part of the strike said that workers trying to enter the site were called “scabs” and “snakes” and blocked from entering. This worker stated: “Some managed to push through - myself bring one of them. It was absolute chaos with hundreds of people congregated near the gates and bus terminal.”

President Gabriel Boric and the rightward shift of the Chilean pseudo-left
President Gabriel Boric gave his fourth and final televised annual address to Chile’s National Congress at the beginning of June and is set to hand over the reins of office in March of next year. Much of the international media focused on Boric’s attention-grabbing gestures he outlined in the so-called “Public Account” speech, such as a bill to close the luxury prison holding Pinochet-era military criminals, a proposal to ban imports from Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories and an abortion bill. More will be said about these measures; suffice it to say that they have been submitted by a lame duck president. The liberal and progressive media aligned to Boric’s Apruebo Dignidad coalition made much ado about the so-called great achievements he listed in his three-hour address, his pension reform, the raising of the minimum wage, emergency housing and health care reforms, etc. None of these measures even begin to address the dire conditions facing the working class. What was truly striking about his speech is just how far to the right his pseudo-left coalition government has traveled over three years in office. The right-ward trajectory of the ruling coalition, made up of the pseudo-left Broad Front alliance, the Stalinist Communist Party and the bourgeois Socialist Party-Party for Democracy, substantiates the International Committee of the Fourth International’s characterization of pseudo-left organizations as political tendencies reflecting the aspirations of upper middle class layers for a more equitable wealth distribution only within the wealthiest 10 percent. This political stratum decades ago renounced even the pretense of fighting for the revolutionary transformation of society. It accommodated itself to the financialization of the economy and the needs of the capitalist nation-state, with all that this implied—the return to colonialist wars and plunder, de-industrialization and impoverishment of the working class, and the ever-widening breach between rich and poor. At critical inflection points during the reemergence of the class struggle over the last 15 years, they have mouthed left-sounding phraseology only to better ensnare radicalized youth, students and workers, to dissipate their struggles and divert them back into the safe channels of bourgeois parliamentarism and the grip of the despised establishment parties.
