12,000 workers protest as German auto supplier ZF plans massive job cuts
Early Tuesday morning, around 6,000 employees from the two ZF plants and the research center on the city adjoining Lake Constance marched to the company headquarters. Their protest was directed at the ZF supervisory board meeting, which continues until Thursday and is expected to decide upon additional cuts to those already announced. Protests also took place in Saarbrücken and Schweinfurt. In front of the Bavarian plant (workforce of 8,600) in Schweinfurt, 4,500 employees demonstrated to keep their jobs while nearly 2,000 employees protested in Saarbrücken (ZF workforce of around 8,500). Russia blocks Speedtest
Speedtest, one of the most popular internet speed-testing platforms globally, boasts millions of daily users. Roskomnadzor has recommended Russian users switch to a homegrown alternative called ProSet, developed as part of the country’s broader push toward digital sovereignty. Russian authorities first signaled a potential ban on Speedtest in October 2024. At the time, the regulator warned the service could be blocked if it was found to compromise the stability, integrity, or safety of domestic networks.

El Salvador's ruling party backs indefinite re-election in constitutional proposal
El Salvador's ruling party on Thursday put forward a proposal which could drastically overhaul how elections are run in the Central American nation, potentially opening the door for another term from President Nayib Bukele. Bukele won a second term last year despite a constitutional ban on re-election. El Salvador's top court, filled with Bukele-backed judges, had ruled that it was the leader's human right to run again.

Argentina to Grant Citizenship to Foreign Investors Without Residency Requirement
“A foreign individual who has made a significant investment may apply for Argentine citizenship… through the Citizenship by Investment Agency,” the decree states. “Once the application is submitted, the Agency will evaluate whether the investment made by the applicant qualifies as ‘significant,’ in accordance with criteria set by the Economy Ministry,” it adds. Besides defining the responsibilities of the agency, Milei’s decree establishes that time spent residing in Argentina will not be a factor in determining eligibility for citizenship.

Witkoff and Huckabee to enter Gaza as anger over famine mounts
"Tomorrow, special envoy Witkoff and ambassador Huckabee will be travelling into Gaza to inspect the current (aid) distribution sites and secure a plan to deliver more food and meet with local Gazans to hear firsthand about this dire situation on the ground," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday. The visit will be Witkoff’s second to Gaza and the first visit from a US ambassador to the enclave in over two decades. It reflects mounting pressure by Trump to address the enclaves' starving Palestinians, as resentment grows not only among US allies but within his own MAGA base.

TikTok Appoints Ex-Israeli Soldier as New ‘Hate Speech’ Manager
TikTok’s appointment of an ex-Israeli army instructor as its new hate speech manager has been criticized, with concern raised for the future of digital freedoms for Palestinians. Erica Mindel previously worked with the U.S. State Department under Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, the Biden Administration’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism, according to Sada Social, a body that monitors and documents digital violations against Palestinian content.

These Companies Avoided Clean-Air Rules. It Took a Single Email.
In March, the Trump administration created a novel way for companies to potentially avoid complying with environmental rules: Simply send an email to the Environmental Protection Agency and request an exemption. In response, representatives of at least 15 coal-burning power plants, four steel mills, four chemical facilities and two mines wrote emails to the E.P.A. this spring, according to documents reviewed by The New York Times.

Fema denies grants to three Kentucky counties hit by devastating storms
Fema officials claimed the areas did not suffer enough damage to merit federal support, in a letter issued to the governor on Tuesday. But the move is just the latest in a series of denials from the agency, as the Trump administration seeks to shift the burden of responding to and recovering from disasters on to states. Last week, Fema also rejected Maryland’s request for disaster assistance after near-record-level flooding in May destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses and tore into roads and public infrastructure, leaving close to $16m in damages.

Former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter moved quickly to establish herself as a leading contender, as her campaign pleaded for donations to “solidify Katie as the Democratic front-runner.” Former Biden administration health secretary Xavier Becerra sought to position himself as an heir to the Harris legacy: They both previously served as California attorneys general.

Brown University reaches deal with Trump administration to restore $50m in funds
In addition to a pledge to “reaffirm compliance with nondiscrimination laws” in admissions and programs, the deal also prevents Brown from administering gender-affirming surgeries to minors or prescribing puberty blockers. The university has also agreed to implement the Trump administration’s definitions of male and female (as outlined in a January executive order) for women’s athletics, student programs, campus facilities and housing.

Mark Carney’s AI agenda is a gift to Big Tech
When Evan Solomon took the stage in Ottawa last month to give his inaugural speech as Canada’s first-ever Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, he was quick to reassure tech leaders that regulating their industry would not be his top priority. Rather than dwelling on AI’s pitfalls and “over-indexing on warnings and regulation,” his focus would be on unlocking the technology’s economic potential, he said. The regulatory legislation that had been in the works under Justin Trudeau was now fully off the table. For Canada’s tech elites, this was cause for celebration. After spending much of the past year cozying up to Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives in search of less regulation and lower taxes, these CEOs could now breathe a sigh of relief. But for everyone else—from public service workers to artists, gig workers, refugees, and the broader public—Solomon’s message should cause alarm. The government appears poised to speed ahead with adopting AI without considering its proven drawbacks and harms.

Rosa Luxemburg: Either Or (April 1916)
Never in world history has a political party gone so miserably bankrupt, never has an exalted ideal been so disgracefully betrayed and dragged through the mud! Thousands and thousands of proletarians could cry bloody tears of shame and anger because all that was so dear and holy to them has now become the object of the whole world’s ridicule and scorn. Thousands upon thousands are burning with the desire to wipe out the stains, to remove the disgrace of the party, so that they can again call themselves Social Democrats with their heads held high and without shame.
But each comrade must keep one thing in mind: such a sharp reverse can be overcome only by a determined, clear and ruthless policy, Half measures, vacillation, timid see-saw policies can never help us. Now each of us must say to himself: either-or. Either we are national liberal sheep in the coat of the socialist lion, in which case we avoid any playing at opposition; or we are fighters of the proletarian International in the full meaning of the term, in which case we must set ourselves to the work of opposition, in which case the banner of the class struggle and inter-nationalism must be unfurled openly and at all costs. Party Comrades, look at the so-called opposition until now as represented by Ledebour, Haase, and their friends. Having obediently tolerated the granting of war credits in the Reichstag on four consecutive occasions, thus sharing in the guilt for the betrayal of socialism, they finally plucked up the courage to vote against these credits in the plenary session of December 21st, 1915. At last! the workers said to themselves. Finally a public renunciation of the policy of nationalistic humbug. At last at least twenty men in parliament who cherish socialism! Their delusion, however, was short-lived, and only those who regard events quite superficially, without investigating matters more thoroughly, could express unqualified joy at this ‘act of courage’. Accompanying their refusal of the credits, Geyer and his comrades in the Reichstag offered an explanation which destroyed all the good they had done with their negative vote. Why did they vote against the credits this time? According to their explanation because, ‘Our frontiers are secure.’ What these worthy people hoped to accomplish with these words, to whom they were addressing them, is their own affair. To the outsider who is not initiated into that grand diplomacy of the backrooms, which might have suggested an answer, the issue is simple: the twenty voted against the credits ostensibly because the German frontiers were secure. That is to say, not because we oppose militarism and the war in principle, not because this war is an imperialist crime against all peoples, but because Hindenburg, Mackensen and Kluck have already wiped out enough Russians, Frenchmen and Belgians and have gained a firm footing in their countries – this is why a German Social Democrat can indulge in the luxury of voting against war expenditures! In doing this, however, Geyer and his comrades are basically in line with the majority policy. This means that they support the brazen humbug which makes this war out to have been a defensive war from the outset, aimed at protecting our frontiers, What distinguishes Geyer and comrades from the majority, then, is not that they hold a different view, based on principle, of the whole position towards the war, but merely that they assess the military situation differently.
