How do comrades plan on successfully going about redesigning cities?
I live in Montreal. For the past seven years, our city has undergone a pretty serious transformation investing in “people-oriented” infrastructure like bike lanes, green spaces, third spaces, pedestrianized streets in the summer, more train lines, and lots and lots of trees and community gardens. Even though it’s happening in a bourgeois context, these are all things leftists have been demanding as a way of making cities more pleasurable and inclusive for residents. The problem is, many of these plans have been met with huge public opposition. People complain about lack of parking spaces, a “war on cars”, too many bikes on the road, too little money spent on other infrastructure, and similar things. My question is, under socialism we would want our cities to be redesigned this way, but how would we manage the huge public opposition to it if there was an opposition to begin with? How would we convince people that, say, giant flower pots in parking spaces is a good thing? Or that public transit is better than cars? Or that mixed-use buildings are good?
Just asking because comrades can’t implement shit if the will of the people goes against us.
