‘Unprecedented’ wildfire burns area size of Paris in southern France
The fire, which started on Tuesday afternoon, had burned 16,000 hectares (39,537 acres) inland from the Mediterranean near the Spanish border. It began in the village of Ribaute in the Aude department, spreading across the rural, wooded area of the Corbières, famous for its vineyards and medieval villages.

Hamburg dockworker demands union action against genocide in Gaza
Mohammed Alattar, who has lost 80 family members in the Gaza massacre, writes in a petition addressed to Verdi that he approached the union leadership with his story and asked what the union was doing in answer. He described the response with anger: “Nothing came back, no chance. Only complete ignorance and silence.” This disregard for the suffering and catastrophe in Gaza, Alattar writes, “reflects the same disregard and isolation that Jewish people in Germany experienced 80 years ago.”

About 300 migrants start walk north from southern Mexico
The group of migrants that left Tapachula, near the border with Guatemala, was small in comparison to migrant caravans in years past. There has been very little movement of migrants in public since U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January, though migration numbers had been falling even prior to that. Those walking Wednesday said their goal was not to reach the United States, but rather central Mexico. They complained that they had been waiting for months to legalize their status or receive asylum.

Brazil: Opposition lawmakers stay the night in Congress
The opposition was demanding a general and unrestricted amnesty for those convicted of attempting a coup d'état, in addition to De Moraes' impeachment. The magistrate is the rapporteur for the case against Bolsonaro, who is accused of leading an attempt to annul the 2022 presidential elections by putting pressure on military commanders. The complaint also points to plans to assassinate and arrest public officials. Bolsonaro and the others under investigation deny the accusations.

Sudan says army destroys Emirati aircraft, killing 40 mercenaries
A military source, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the UAE plane "was bombed and completely destroyed" at Darfur's Nyala airport. The airport has recently come under repeated air strikes by the Sudanese army, at war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023.

Rwanda agrees to take deportees from the US after a previous migrant deal with the UK collapsed
Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo told The Associated Press in a statement that the East African country would accept up to 250 deportees from the U.S., with “the ability to approve each individual proposed for resettlement” under the agreement. Makolo didn’t provide a timeline for any deportees to arrive in Rwanda or say if they would arrive at once or in several batches. She said details were still being worked out. The State Department said the U.S. “works with Rwanda on a range of mutual priorities” but wouldn’t comment on details of the deportation deal and what it called diplomatic conversations with other governments.

Large Majority of Israeli Jews Untroubled by Reports of Famine in Gaza, Poll Finds
Among the Arab public, 86 percent said they are "very troubled" or "somewhat troubled" about the situation in Gaza. They also found a much greater degree of concern among left-wing Jews, with 70 percent saying that they, too, are troubled by the situation. Jews and Arabs also have profoundly differing views on whether Israel is making substantial efforts to avoid causing unnecessary suffering to Palestinians in Gaza; 78 percent of Jewish respondents agreed that "Israel's actions are restricted by the fighting, but it is making substantial efforts to avoid causing unnecessary suffering to Palestinians in Gaza." Only 22.5 percent of Arabs said that the claim is correct.

Turkey arrests youth LGBTQ activist following Erdogan criticism at Council of Europe speech
Enes Hocaogullari, 23, gave a speech in Strasbourg in March criticising police violence and detentions plus democratic backsliding in Turkey, saying: "The youth has had enough … We are ready to go on the streets to regain our freedoms." He was detained on Tuesday night on arrival from France at Ankara's Esenboga Airport pending trial on charges of "publicly disseminating misleading information" and "inciting hatred and enmity," according to a court document seen by Reuters.

A sergeant shot five soldiers Wednesday at one the country’s largest Army bases before he was quickly tackled by other Fort Stewart troops, forcing a brief lockdown, officials said. Few details were immediately available about what led to the gunfire, but officials said the shooter was Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, who used a personal handgun, not a military firearm.

Democrats Rebuked for Backing GOP War on Public Schools, Trump Voucher Expansion
Evidence is mounting across the United States that school vouchers are harming public schools—and numerous studies have shown they largely do not benefit students academically as proponents have long claimed—leaving education advocates to wonder why the issue of so-called "school choice" is a fault line within the Democratic Party.

Trump administration makes it easier to join ICE
The change illustrates one of the challenges with Trump’s oft-promised goal of deporting 1 million people per year. The White House has enlisted the help of local law enforcement through cooperation agreements, and states such as Florida and Texas have volunteered to help, but any concerted effort will require hiring thousands more agents by an agency that has struggled with retention and retirements in recent years. In addition to lifting the age restrictions, DHS is also offering a signing bonus of up to $50,000, student loan repayment assistance and other benefits to attract recruits, the agency said in a news release.

Trump moves to shut down NASA missions that measure carbon dioxide and plant health
The Trump administration is moving to shut down two NASA missions that monitor a potent greenhouse gas and plant health, potentially shutting off an important source of data for scientists, policymakers and farmers. President Donald Trump’s budget request for fiscal year 2026 includes no money for the Orbiting Carbon Observatories, which can precisely show where carbon dioxide is being emitted and absorbed and how well crops are growing.

Border patrol agents jump out of rental truck and ambush people at LA Home Depot
Videos of the operation, and federal officials’ statements boasting about the detentions, have raised questions about whether the US government was complying with a federal court order halting indiscriminate raids in the region due to evidence of racial profiling. That ruling, upheld last week by an appeals court, followed reports of Latino US citizens getting swept up in LA raids and accounts of undocumented people being targeted based on their appearance and whether they spoke Spanish.

Los Angeles County CEO unveils sweeping assault on social programs and public health care
In a chilling briefing last week to the Board of Supervisors, Los Angeles County CEO Fesia Davenport laid out a sweeping plan to impose unprecedented austerity measures that would gut critical public services, dismantle vital social programs and even shut down parts of the region’s already overburdened public hospital system. Davenport, who oversees the largest county government in the United States, warned that the combination of deep federal funding cuts, spiraling legal and emergency costs and rising labor expenditures had created a “tidal wave” of financial pressures.

957 - Democracy Soon! feat. Osita Nwanevu (8/4/25) (Chapo Trap House)
Osita Nwanevu stops by to discuss his new book The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding. Osita leads us through his case that American “democracy” as it currently stands isn’t that democratic at all. We discuss the real intentions of the founders, the actual American revolution of the Civil War, and the stalled re-founding of reconstruction. We also look at the potential for economic democracy, the political reforms needed to re-found the country, the problem of the judiciary, and the challenges of a new media environment to democratizing movements. Yes, today the wacky morning DJ actually does say democracy’s a joke.

BRICS+: Anti-Imperialist Solidarity in the Global South?
At the 17th BRICS+ summit, held in Brazil on June 6-7, the assembled governments claimed to continue their shift away from the U.S.-dominated world order by “strengthening Global South Cooperation for a more inclusive and sustainable governance.” On the surface, these goals might seem to align with socialist and anti-imperialist positions. Western neoliberal institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank guarantee the rule of a few big capitalist powers. This leads some socialists, like the Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSL), to see BRICS+ as having “the potential to create openings for this [socialist] project by challenging imbalances among nations in the global economy and diplomacy.” However, BRICS+ is full of internal contradictions. Its aim of democratically reforming the United Nations does not go beyond giving a select few Global South nations a seat at the exploiters’ table. It is a reformist solution which does not address the root of global inequality. The New Development Bank, established by the BRICS states and headquartered in Shanghai, claims to offer “sustainable infrastructure development” in a multilateral spirit, yet its development projects still operate on foreign debt. Patrick Bond, Professor of Sociology at the University of Johannesburg, summarises this as “maintaining policies of economic liberalisation that lower national economic barriers and generate huge gains for already wealthy elites holding property or stock market shares.” In other words, these are new organs in the framework of an inherently exploitative system, and are not intended to negate that system.

The Deep Ties and Deeper Pockets of Minnesota’s Far-Right
The Rush Creek Golf Club’s event space was filled with the din of knives and forks, scraping and tapping ceramic to the tune of conspiratorial chit chat, as a fluorescent white audience –mostly over the retirement age — shared with one another the latest misinformation to come across their Facebook feeds. At one of the many tables in the room, an old man in a trucker hat broke the ice with the man sitting next to him by diving right into the assassination of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman. For him, it was just another example of how the Democrats will stop at nothing to steal his tax dollars. “That was just the illegals,” the man said between bites of food. “Can you imagine where else they’re putting money?” The other man listened attentively, eating the complimentary lunch that was included with the $20 entrance fee. At the very front of the space, blocking the room’s view of white men in polo shirts cruising around on golf carts outside, was a projector screen displaying a title slide with the stamp-like logo of the event’s purpose: the so-called ‘Minnesota Department of Government Efficiency,’ or ‘MN DOGE.’ This was the thirteenth of such events held by the Center of the American Experiment, Minnesota’s largest right-wing think tank. Before Maple Grove, the tour made appearances in such cities as St. Cloud, Duluth and Brainerd. In the demonstration at the golf club, the Center’s representatives had a plexiglass tube set up with a bunch of red, white and blue balls. Each color of ball represented an amount in imagined savings, and when the tube filled the room would celebrate the thought of a $2 billion surplus.
