India’s opposition parties protest against a controversial electoral roll revision
India’s opposition accuses the Election Commission of India of rushing through a mammoth electoral roll revision in eastern Bihar state, saying the exercise could render vast numbers of citizens unable to vote. The revision of nearly 80 million voters involves strict documentation requirements from citizens, triggering concerns it could lead to the exclusion of vulnerable groups, especially those who are unable to produce the paperwork required to prove their citizenship.

Israeli Tourist Boom in Sri Lanka’s Arugam Bay Stirs Local Unease
The opposition political parties criticized the government’s alleged tilt toward Israel, pointing to visa-free entry for Israeli tourists as proof that the traditionally pro-Palestinian National People’s Power (NPP) has changed its stance. But the same opposition would likely hit the streets if firm action on Israeli tourists sparked a U.S. tariff snapback or a slump in arrivals. The government is squeezed between values (nonalignment, empathy for Palestinians) and vulnerabilities (dollars, debt, and jobs). In that gap, symbolism often beats substance and enforcement gets deferred.

Nearly 400 “voluntary redundancies” sought at Western Sydney University
Management is now working with faculty and school deans to hand-pick the staff whose applications will be accepted, while still threatening forced redundancies as well. This is another warning of the scale of the job cuts and sweeping restructuring being demanded throughout Australia’s 39 public universities. So far, more than 3,500 job losses have been unveiled across the country during the past 10 months.

Israeli forces accused of escalating intimidation campaign against journalists in Syria
Multiple reporters told the Committee to Protect Journalists that troops have arrested, injured and fired live rounds at media workers in the southern province of Quneitra, much of which was seized by Israeli forces late last year. Israel invaded southern Syria following the ouster of the Assad regime in December, capturing hundreds of square-kilometres of Syrian land in what it says is an indefinite occupation.

As part of the arrangement, of which the PKK is also a party, the camp is expected to be fully evacuated by September, regional sources said. Nationwide blackout hits Iraq amid record heatwave
The Ministry of Electricity said the Mussayib–Babil 400 kV lines tripped under heavy loads driven by record temperatures above 50°C (122°F) and a surge of millions of pilgrims in Karbala. The outage wiped out more than 6,000 megawatts, triggering a chain reaction that shut down generating units nationwide. Power plants in Basra, Maysan, Dhi Qar, Baghdad, Diyala, and al-Anbar went offline. Southern and central provinces, including Basra and the mid-Euphrates region, were hit hardest despite not being the source of the fault.

Assaulted charity walkers blame Palestine Action ban for emboldening far-right thugs
Two members of the Hastings-based Friends of Al-Mawasi group told of being viciously attacked by Israel supporters while waiting for fellow demonstrators to arrive for a fundraising walk. Richard Wistreich, who is Jewish and whose father escaped the Holocaust, was repeatedly called a Nazi by Israel supporters, while a woman was pushed to the ground and called a “f** terrorist” for wearing a keffiyeh.

Wikipedia operator loses court challenge to UK Online Safety Act regulations
The foundation said if it was subject to so-called Category 1 duties – which would require Wikipedia's users and contributors' identities to be verified – it would need to drastically reduce the number of British users who can access the site. Judge Jeremy Johnson dismissed its case on Monday, but said the Wikimedia Foundation could bring a further challenge if regulator Ofcom "(impermissibly) concludes that Wikipedia is a Category 1 service".

Chad opposition leader, ex-PM sentenced to 20 years for inciting violence
The Ngambaye ethnic group enjoys wide popularity among the predominantly Christian and animist populations of the south, whose members feel marginalised by the largely Muslim-dominated authorities in N’Djamena. Masra left Chad after a bloody crackdown on his followers in 2022, only returning under an amnesty agreed in 2024.

Colombia rallies against possible US military intervention in Venezuela
Petro’s initial response was an invitation to the US and Venezuela to work together and to coordinate actions against drug cartels. He emphasized that violence would not be the key to overcoming drug cartels. And that decriminalization efforts and economic integration of left-out groups, such as the peasantry and indigenous groups, would be more effective. The president also critiqued the bounty put on Maduro, saying that: “I don’t believe that the solution to Venezuela’s political problems lies in paying to kill or capture political leaders.”

Colombian senator and presidential hopeful dies 2 months after shooting
Javier Garay, a political science professor at the Externado University of Colombia, said Uribe has already “become a symbol of the Colombian right.” However, he considered it premature to predict whether the senator’s death will strengthen the political faction, given the current lack of unity and diverse proposals from dozens of politicians vying to represent the bloc on next year’s ballot.

Largest US socialist organisation passes resolution supporting Palestinian resistance
Sunday’s resolutions contained both political and practical commitments for DSA. Politically, the resolution supports al-Thawabit, or the Palestinian red lines, the unifying principles outlined by the Palestinian Liberation Organisation in 1977. These principles include the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, the Palestinian right to resist and the right to self-determination. The resolutions also make publicly and consistently opposing the BDS movement, taking money from pro-Israel lobbying groups, and supporting the transfer of funds or weapons to Israel an expellable offence. Elected officials are expected to be held to similar standards by DSA.

Trump to deploy National Guard to D.C. and federalize city police
The news comes on what Trump is calling the "Liberation Day" of D.C., which he has said is "one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the world," despite violent crime trending down in the District for the second straight year. 800 National Guard members are being called to D.C., Trump said at a Monday press conference, adding that he may bring in the military "if needed." The D.C. Guard is the country's only National Guard unit reporting exclusively to the president.

Waste from agricultural plant poisoned US town’s water with Pfas, lawsuits allege
Perdue Farms acknowledged that its 300-acre Salisbury, Maryland, operation is polluting local waters, but the chemicals’ sources have not been confirmed. It appears the Pfas is in part also coming from some combination of sludge used as fertilizer and pesticides, attorneys for plaintiffs say.

Maine can’t enforce foreign election interference law that appeals court calls unconstitutional
“The prohibition is overly broad, silencing U.S. corporations based on the mere possibility that foreign shareholders might try to influence its decisions on political speech, even where those foreign shareholders may be passive owners that exercise no influence or control over the corporation’s political spending,” wrote Judge Lara Montecalvo. The matter was sent back to the lower court, where it will proceed, and there has been no substantive movement on it in recent weeks, said Danna Hayes, a spokesperson for the Maine attorney general’s office, on Monday. The law is on the state’s books, but the state cannot enforce it while legal challenges are still pending, Hayes said.

Ohio requires buses for private school kids. Public school students have to find their own ride
Republican-dominated state legislatures have been pushing for or have already enacted laws that see billions of dollars of taxpayer money directed to funding private school voucher systems in Texas, Florida, Iowa, Tennessee and elsewhere. In Pennsylvania and Minnesota, where political control is largely split between Democrats and Republicans, public schools are required to provide transportation for students attending non-public schools. In January, Donald Trump signed an executive order steering taxpayer funds from public schools to private schools.

Interview of Reem Hazan, Politburo member of the Communist Party of Israel, to Rizospastis: "Reactions within Israel are growing"
The weekend 9/10 August edition of “Rizospastis”, Organ of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), published an interview with Reema Hazan, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Israel (Maki) and head of its International Relations Section. Read below the interview translated into English: “Last night (Thursday) the Israeli cabinet approved the beginning of a full-scale occupation of the Gaza Strip. We warn of the continuation of ethnic cleansing, the war of extermination and the further destruction of Gaza,” Hazan says and continues: “This government, motivated by racial supremacy and messianic fanaticism, must stop. Even those in the Israeli leadership who hesitate to expand the war do so out of concern for their soldiers and their prisoners, not out of concern for committing war crimes against an entire people. Israelis must not accept the continuation of this war and this criminal government. The protests demanding an end to the war and the overthrow of this government must continue. Only with an agreement and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces can the cessation of the extermination of the Palestinian people be ensured.

Ballard Partners Is the Lobbyist King of the Trump Era
The Securities and Exchange Commission, overseen by crypto millionaire Paul Atkins, just agreed to drop its lawsuit against the cryptocurrency exchange Ripple after Biden-era regulators sued the firm for alleged securities fraud. Ripple, which will still have to pay a $125 million fine, gave $4.9 million to Trump’s inauguration in January and paid nearly $800,000 to lobby the federal government in the first half of fiscal 2025. That included $260,000 spent lobbying on issues related to crypto regulation paid to DC’s newly crowned lobbying king, Ballard Partners. Ballard Partners was founded in 1998 by wealthy conservative donor Brian Ballard — a major MAGA fundraiser since Trump’s first campaign. Ballard Partners also previously employed Trump’s White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, until 2020, and his attorney general, Pam Bondi, until her confirmation in January. The firm’s clout within Trumpworld has made Ballard the highest-earning lobbying shop in the United States, raking in more than $20 million just last quarter from clients clamoring to get the ear of the White House. (It’s overtaken powerhouse Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, which has long used DC’s revolving door to help its corporate and oligarch clients.) If Ballard Partners’ luck continues, its annual revenues will rival those of small government agencies — a “lobbying gusher,” Politico reports, crowning “a new set of power brokers in Trump’s swamp.”

Profit Pathology and Disposable Planet by Michael Parenti
Some years ago in New England, a group of environmentalists asked a corporate executive how his company (a paper mill) could justify dumping its raw industrial effluent into a nearby river. The river–which had taken Mother Nature centuries to create–was used for drinking water, fishing, boating, and swimming. In just a few years, the paper mill had turned it into a highly toxic open sewer. The executive shrugged and said that river dumping was the most cost-effective way of removing the mill's wastes. If the company had to absorb the additional expense of having to clean up after itself, it might not be able to maintain its competitive edge and would then have to go out of business or move to a cheaper labor market, resulting in a loss of jobs for the local economy. It was a familiar argument: the company had no choice. It was compelled to act that way in a competitive market. The mill was not in the business of protecting the environment but in the business of making a profit, the highest possible profit at the highest possible rate of return. Profit is the name of the game, as business leaders make clear when pressed on the point. The overriding purpose of business is capital accumulation. To justify its single-minded profiteering, Corporate America promotes the classic laissez-faire theory which claims that the free market—a congestion of unregulated and unbridled enterprises all selfishly pursuing their own ends—is governed by a benign “invisible hand” that miraculously produces optimal outputs for everybody. The free marketeers have a deep all-abiding faith in laissez-faire for it is a faith that serves them well. It means no government oversight, no being held accountable for the environmental disasters they perpetrate. Like greedy spoiled brats, they repeatedly get bailed out by the government (some free market!) so that they can continue to take irresponsible risks, plunder the land, poison the seas, sicken whole communities, lay waste to entire regions, and pocket obscene. profits.
