Tradcaths seem to be disproportionately converts though, and they have convert zeal. Most people born into Catholicism don't take it very seriously and only have a superficial knowledge of their own religion. Tradcaths really seem to be more the product of evangelical fanaticism using the history, imagery, and intellectual history of the Catholic Church to legitimize beliefs that are pretty at odds with contemporary Catholic teaching. It's theologically incoherent to say things like "I'm a traditional Catholic but I hate the current Pope!" A basic tenet of Catholicism is support for the institution of the Papacy and Catholic Church as it actually exists, so being a "tradcath" is a contradiction in terms. Saying "the Church was once good but has now become corrupted so we arent obligated to listen to its leaders or follow its doctrine" is literally just Protestantism. They basically just like the aesthetics of Catholicism from like the 11th-16th centuries, they might as well just be 40k nerds.

I agree that many tradcaths especially converts show a kind of “convert zeal.” When it comes to Hispanic Catholics, a lot of them already have a deeply ingrained cultural Catholicism that doesn’t always strictly match official Church doctrine. You see it in things like local saints, folk devotions, and added traditions that develop alongside the formal faith.

When some encounter the tradcath aesthetic via memes, imagery, or rhetoric they often blend it with what they already grew up with (candles, rosaries, the Virgen de Guadalupe, church rituals) without necessarily interrogating the deeper theological or historical claims behind it.

What I tend to see is a lot of humiliating stuff that people do to themselves. There's all this bowing and kissing the feet of icons. But they enjoy it and it feels comfy, and they feel like they need it, and they're not getting it in a hyper-atomized consumer society (which is becoming harder and harder to access because things are becoming more expensive).
