Turkey denies role in alleged plot to kill Israeli minister Ben Gvir
According to a report by Ynet, one of the suspects had moved to Turkey several years ago, where he came into contact with Hamas members. “During the war in Gaza, he allegedly devised the plan to assassinate Ben Gvir using armed drones,” the report said. The suspects reportedly received around $2,000 from contacts in Turkey to purchase drones and other equipment. Police told Ynet the group bought two DJI drones, attached explosives, and conducted a successful test drop. The reports suggested that the plot was coordinated with Hamas leadership based in Turkey. However, Turkish officials have consistently maintained that Ankara hosts only the political leadership of Hamas and does not provide military support to the group.

Iraq’s al-Sadr urges action on water crisis
The Ministry of Water Resources confirmed in July that reserves have collapsed due to shrinking inflows from upstream countries and the worsening effects of climate change, making 2025 one of the driest years since 1933 and prompting provinces to issue health alerts and launch campaigns against waterborne diseases. Iraq ranks among the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations, struggling with declining rainfall and dam projects in Turkiye and Iran that have cut flows in the Tigris and Euphrates, while the United Nations lists Iraq among the five countries most exposed to climate change.

Mali takes Algeria to ICJ over downed military drone
Mali accuses Algeria of maintaining "proximity to terrorist groups", particularly in the border region. In January 2024, Mali's junta scrapped a 2015 peace deal with separatist groups brokered by Algeria and which had long been considered essential for stabilising the country. Since 2012, Mali has been gripped by violence from jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group as well as local criminal gangs.

Land quarrels in rebel-occupied Congo threaten Trump peace deal
United Nations refugee agency survey results from February and March, seen by Reuters, identified 200 families in Goma, eastern Congo's biggest city, who said they were unable to return to their farmland, in many cases because others were living and working on it. The figure represents about 10% of those surveyed. The survey did not specify who had taken over the land.

Argentine Senate overrides Milei's veto against Emergency Disability Law
In addition to the veto override, the Senate also approved a bill to reform and limit the use of Emergency Decrees (DNUs). This bill, which passed with 56 votes in favor, 8 against, and 2 abstentions, requires DNUs to address a single issue and gives a 90-day deadline for their ratification by both houses of Congress. A rejection from either one would be enough to nullify the decree. This bill now moves to the Lower House for consideration.

Trump sends 10 stealth fighter planes to Puerto Rico amid war on Caribbean drug cartels
The deployment of strike aircraft to Puerto Rico, first reported by Reuters, citing two sources briefed on the matter, is a sharp escalation of the US president’s crackdown on what he sees as a Venezuelan-led drug trafficking menace in the region. The planes will arrive in the US territory next week and will be part of a sustained military campaign in the Latin American region that began with Tuesday’s air strike, the news agency said.

Colombia’s Senate elects new Constitutional Court magistrate amid corruption concerns
La Silla Vacia reported in July that during his tenure as ombudsman, Camargo appointed relatives of nine out of the 22 Supreme Court Justices, and gave contracts and positions to five Senators. The Supreme Court, in turn, put Camargo on its Constitutional Court shortlist. In an attempt to prevent the election of the former ombudsman, the government lobbied for the election of one of his competitors, Maria Balanta, which failed miserably.

Cotton farmers in India protest tariff withdrawal and betrayal by Modi
The protesting farmers also sent a joint letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pressing for their demands which includes increase in the minimum support price of cotton of Rs. 10,075 per quintal (around 114 US dollars), loan waivers to all cotton farmers, and a minimum of Rs. 2.5 million (28,311 US dollars) compensation for the families of the farmers who died by suicide. US Navy Seals killed North Korean civilians in botched 2019 mission, report says
The plan was designed to fix a “blind spot” in US intelligence that would allow the US to intercept the North Korean leader’s communications, potentially giving Trump an advantage ahead of the summit between the two leaders in 2019. But it unraveled when the detachment of Navy Seals came across North Korean civilians who appeared to be diving for shellfish, the Times reported. The American forces opened fire, killing all those on the small fishing vessel, the report said, without specifying the number of casualties.

Leftist Groups Across Russia Stage Protests Against Telegram, WhatsApp Call Blocking
The first protest was held on Sunday in the southwestern city of Voronezh, where an estimated 80 people gathered after the local Organization of Voronezh Marxists successfully obtained a permit. Demonstrators also voiced their opposition to Max, a state-backed messaging app promoted as a domestic alternative to WhatsApp and Telegram. The Russian Communist Party (of Internationalists), another Marxist group, announced plans for similar protests this coming Sunday in the Siberian and Far East cities of Novosibirsk, Omsk and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. To date, only the authorities in Omsk have granted them permission. The group is still awaiting authorization from Moscow officials for a demonstration planned for Sept. 13.

The labor market is cratering
Once again, the real stunner came in the revisions, which showed the economy's 53-month-long streak of jobs growth ended in May. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said that employers shed 13,000 jobs in June — the first employment contraction since December 2020. It was a downward revision from the data that showed a gain of roughly as many jobs. With those revisions, the economy has added an average of 29,000 jobs over the past three months — a stall-speed pace compared to the three-month average of 111,000 in March.

Cannabis workers strike to form union in Ann Arbor

UFCW filed a complaint with the state cannabis agency and an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board in late August. An Exclusive Brands spokesperson declined to comment to Axios. The Livonia-based retailer and grower has seven dispensaries in Michigan.

Israel Slaughters Thousands of Palestinians Through Weaponized Aid
Gaza, Palestine — As international scholars have finally come to officially define Israel’s actions in Gaza over the last 23 months as genocide, we look at how Israel is using starvation to weaponize humanitarian aid in the strategy of further killings. Over the summer of 2025, Unicorn Riot heard firsthand accounts from dozens of witnesses in Gaza who describe Israel’s new aid mechanism as a death trap, see the video below — for more Palestine, visit here. After banning UNWRA from operating in Gaza and all occupied Palestinian territories starting in February 2025, Israel systematically criminalized and dismantled the rest of Gaza’s network of civilian aid that was in place for decades. Around the same time that Israel’s ban on UNWRA’s went into effect, Israel violated a fragile ceasefire with Hamas and then fully stopped allowing the entry of aid into Gaza in March — Israel controls all access points into Gaza. In late May 2025, the so-called ‘Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’ (GHF) began distributing limited aid rations at four military-controlled stations in the Gaza Strip. This led to over 1,300 unarmed Palestinian civilians being killed by Israeli forces while trying to obtain aid at sites run by GHF from May 27 to Aug. 31, 2025. “I consider this the invention of a new mechanism for killing the Palestinian people,” said Ahmed Refaat, who called GHF a “security agency” that’s working with “the Zionist enemy to lure Palestinians into these traps, and then giving the signal” to kill Palestinians.

Amazon’s Shameless Union Busting Shouldn’t Be Forgotten
Two and a half years ago, thousands of workers at one of Amazon’s giant warehouses, known as JFK8, voted to unionize. Their victory generated huge amounts of attention across the country, and suddenly, one of the leaders of the organizing drive, Chris Smalls, was everywhere. Smalls became an overnight celebrity, and he even met with President Joe Biden at the White House. The Amazon warehouse victory created a spark of hope that we might be witnessing a turning point for workers. Of course, even at the time, I cautioned that “without a lot more pressure on Amazon, the workers at JFK8 will be waiting a long time for their union contract.” Now, two and a half years later, it’s safe to say the spark has been extinguished. What happened, and what lessons can we learn? The short answer as to what happened is that labor law is broken. When workers vote to unionize, an employer does not face an order to bargain until it has fully exhausted all of its appeals, a process that typically takes between three and five years. And once the order comes, the workers receive no compensation for the long delay. Instead, a court will simply issue a prospective bargaining order. So, an employer that can afford the attorneys’ fees has every incentive to raise even borderline frivolous objections and keep appealing its defeats. It didn’t take any great insight to realize that this is exactly what Amazon would do. What’s more surprising and disappointing is that the labor movement let the country forget about the JFK8 Amazon workers. Here’s where the labor movement needs to learn a lesson from MAGA. Think about the January 6 insurrectionists. As their cases worked their way through the legal system, Trump and his followers never forgot about them. Instead, at every opportunity they were celebrated as martyrs and victims. Trump energized his base by promising “justice” for the insurrectionists, and then he followed through on his promise by pardoning them all at the beginning of his term. In other words, Trump took a bunch of people who were on the losing side of an election, and who resorted to violence to prevent the peaceful transfer of power, and he turned them into heroes.

Slavoj Zizek: The Matrix, or, the two sides of perversion
When I saw The Matrix at a local theatre in Slovenia, I had the unique opportunity of sitting close to the ideal spectator of the film – namely, to an idiot. A man in the late 20ies at my right was so immersed in the film that he all the time disturbed other spectators with loud exclamations, like “My God, wow, so there is no reality!”… I definitely prefer such naive immersion to the pseudo-sophisticated intellectualist readings which project into the film the refined philosophical or psychoanalytic conceptual distinctions.1 It is nonetheless easy to understand this intellectual attraction of The Matrix: is it not that The Matrix is one of the films which function as a kind of Rorschach test [http://rorschach.test.at/] setting in motion the universalized process of recognition, like the proverbial painting of God which seems always to stare directly at you, from wherever you look at it – practically every orientation seems to recognize itself in it? My Lacanian friends are telling me that the authors must have read Lacan; the Frankfurt School partisans see in the Matrix the extrapolated embodiment of Kulturindustrie, the alienated-reified social Substance (of the Capital) directly taking over, colonizing our inner life itself, using us as the source of energy; New Agers see in the source of speculations on how our world is just a mirage generated by a global Mind embodied in the World Wide Web. This series goes back to Plato’s Republic: does The Matrix not repeat exactly Plato’s dispositif of the cave (ordinary humans as prisoners, tied firmly to their seats and compelled to watch the shadowy performance of (what they falsely consider to be) reality? The important difference, of course, is that when some individuals escape their cave predicament and step out to the surface of the Earth, what they find there is no longer the bright surface illuminated by the rays of the Sun, the supreme Good, but the desolate “desert of the real.” The key opposition is here the one between Frankfurt School and Lacan: should we historicize the Matrix into the metaphor of the Capital that colonized culture and subjectivity, or is it the reification of the symbolic order as such? However, what if this very alternative is false? What if the virtual character of the symbolic order “as such” is the very condition of historicity?
