It's not so much an economic theory as it is a scam; a bunch of rich assholes convinced the world that if you eliminate all regulation and effectively dismantle the government and the rule of law, then the rich will be able to become much richer and this will be great for everyone. In other words, a repeat of the same kind of retarded laissez-faire economics which caused The Great Depression. It's almost like a form of economic nihilism if you think about it and consider how obviously unsustainable it is and how it will inevitably lead to enormous economic inequality and eventual market collapse; it's an ideology designed by rich people who want to be able to get so rich that they destroy civilized society.

Neoliberalism is actually way older than the 1970s. it came from the Walter Lippmann conference which took place in 1938. This was a kind of desperate meeting between liberal intellectuals in Europe, at an age when liberalism was being declared dead due to ongoing depression and the abandonment of liberal economics, with most people either supporting socialism, FDR style welfare capitalism or fascism. and funnily enough you can point out that the term was coined by liberals themselves, not by leftists
